update 7/00: listener Joe Doss reports that this sounds like a SBD, and Rob Bertrando points out that a SMC> VHS HiFi> R> D version circulates- one might infer that this is that version; see flaw notes in public comment section

SUGAREE
This "Sugaree" made my eyes spin in their sockets.
This is still early Brent? And he just completely dives in as though he has known these songs for years. Pretty astounding all around.

Choppy
Great clarity and separation but keyboards and rhythm guitar are louder than Jerry's guitar. A bunch of buzzkilling choppiness in the middle of songs- there's one during Around and Around, and one in the middle of the Shakedown- there's no dead air, these chops just instantly jump ahead, cutting out part of the song. The beginning of Stagger Lee missing probably due to a tape flip delay.

the space needle, '79
Having missed some earlier Canadian offerings, (Vancouver 73, Festival Express 72, I was in dire need of my 1st Deadshow, so, upon hearing of the concert while I sat in a jail cell doin' 30 days for stealing a pack of sausages...on a dare...to feed the hungry wet, and cold, night time pickin', psilocybin mushroom pickers, all 25 of em', I got thrown in the hooskow with a gram of hash stuck firmly into my cheek. I heard of the show in Seattle and I took this little red head, get this, that I met at the Greyhound bus stop, the day of my release (hard time i tell ya), and she jumped my bones in broad daylight behind the bus depot!! (well, we were in the trees), so, she and I hooked up for a few weeks and headed down to Seattle. I was in heaven, sparked up and what can ya say, seemed like 4 hours of solid fusion for what, 4.50? Wow,
See ya down the pike,
Rob

Great show
Awesome version of Stagger Lee, my favorite in fact. Passenger is awesome, as well as a ridiculous Sugaree.
The filler threw me for a bit until I realized it was the same first set as this show, all the way up to this show Terrapin. Not really sure why its like that.

Rainy morning in Seattle
Yeah, Mr. Charley. Your review brought back memories of hitching a ride up from the bridge between Portland and Vancouver on the night before and waking up in the rain in a Seattle city park. Had to spend the next several hours-pretty much all day long (ever read an entire Seattle Sunday paper from cover to cover?)-trying to dodge the weather, waiting for showtime. Mississippi Half-Step/Franklin's Tower let me know it was all going to be worth the wait. What a fun night near the Space Needle!

STAGGER LEE
Its pretty much not there. it cuts in 3/4 of the way into the song. Otherwise, its a good sounding show. worth owning, but stagger lee fans will be let down.

Second Set Rocks and is a definate 5 -
I listened to this a second time to make sure friends...
Sugaree sampson very hot playin into a great and trippy drums space into stella blue?? then truckin and hot nobody's jam which dances along into around & around and ranks as one of the cooler post '78 jams I have heard in a while - This is a great show and worth the listen + nice find and a new favorite. It's weird they kick freeking ass in this show and they did not play much at all that summer.

Decent 79 show
While not as good as the hype (here and elsewhere), a solid show worth owning for the serious deadhead. Good Shakedown (except for the cut near the first chorus), good Sugaree...but not as good a night as 12/28.

So glad to see this. Seattle '79 was my first of many many shows. The Passenger to end set one sealed the deal. The bus came by and I got on!

Classic Dead
Hard to beat a 1/2 Step> Franklin's opener! Worth the wait in the pouring rain already. It never let down from there either. Slighty rare second set Sugaree. Garcia was a bit mellow and it felt more "touching" (stella, sugaree, terrapin)I thought but played well. Space took me "out there as far as I care to go" and drop me off at Stella's doorstep gently. Truckin' brought us back to earth and signaled the adventure was coming full circle. Shakedown as the encore was a delightful finishing touch.
There is a good reel>reel aud. from left of SBD permitted by Dan around that got us by for years. It has a reel flip in sugaree but they did an ok job with it. I've seen a video of this one somewhere along the line also.
It had that special kind of continuity that takes it to the next level. Do yourself a favor and let this one suck you into it's vortex, you'll be glad you did!

Only 2 months?
This sbd show is a must hear. Besides the cut intro of PITB, it is an excellent SBD! This is a "basic" Dead show everyone should have in there collection. It is definitely a crossover show, where the feel is typical of a keith & donna show, but it has that 'Brent' sound!!!
I cannot believe Brent had only been with the band a little over 2 months?
BTW..... The ENCORE is my favorite Shakedown Street out there!
