fib, ridiculous; couldn't agree more. Just wanted you to know there's at least one of us out here that totally agrees with your take.I would like your opinion on this, though. What's more ridiculous?; 1) your previously stated take or 2) the fact that a person who's GD frame of reference started around 1983 is in charge of the vault.

Jim F is right though about the highs and lows. I put a smile on my equalizer, dropped the mid ranges and turned up the corners. Give the snare and vocals and bass the balance the recording lacks without the adjustment. Speaking of bass, someone mentioned Phil particularly in trucking as dropping bombs. Yeah, nice build up and bluesy at 6:00. The same bass riff could be equally appropriate coming from a harmonica played by a guy catfishing in the delta- How Phil can get so far from traditional bass lines and sound absolutely natural is amazing to me.

This should be three tracks: Truckin, The Other One, and Stella Blue. "Meltdown Jam", "The Other One Verse 1", "Jam 2" ? Ridiculous.

MLB is the best of Baron von Toll Booth and The Chrome Nun and the Bob and Jerry show play it to the extreme. First night at the Knickerbocker is a great place to hear the rest of MLB Jam live.
This is 40 minutes of delightful, float upstream, outer space. Thank you for a real good time.web.archive.org/web/2im_/http://www.insurancelowrate.com/products/images/7.LoL.GIF" alt="7.LoL.GIF" />web.archive.org/web/2im_/http://www.insurancelowrate.com/products/images/6.LoL.GIF" alt="6.LoL.GIF" />

Y'know the best part of Truckin is that big wind-up into Phil's Bass Bombs. In this recording it is from 5:25 to the series of bombs starting at 6:12ish. Holy shit huh? Jeff Kaplan- u rock

Stella Blue is so beautiful, I love the way the guitar weeps after "a broken angel sings from a guitar", this has always been one of my absolute favorite Grateful Dead songs.

The vocals don't come in so hot on this show, but that doesn't at all take away from the incredible musicianship going on here. Anyone else notice the early "The Music Never Stopped" elements present in the "Mind Left Body Jam"? They're there! Take another listen and find out.

Nice jams here, check this one out folks. Its funny to read the story about Parrish chasing the other head around with a Flinstones club, he sure did fit the role.

Subject: Good Stuff.
It seems some reviewers from a year or so ago neglected to notice that this is a matrix...it is not a sbd, it is not an aud, it's BOTH. A pretty good matrix at that. Some are better than others, I'd say this one is a pretty nice balance.
A good matrix compliments each source. In this case you have a decent 73 AUD combined with a nice, very clean if not a little "dull" sbd (lacking just a tiny bit in the high and low end, very high in the mids). I think this is a case where the board compliments the aud. I like a matrix where the aud compliments the board. Either way, I like it! I think it sounds really nice.
Kaplan-that is a great story! It's a bit of a Devil's advocate quote for all those who always quote Jerry talking about how pro-taper he was with the "when we're done with it, it's theirs" statement.
Anyway, as is the case with most 72-74 shows, I tend to pass over the shorter stuff and listen to the jams, so this matrix is nice because it highlights the best part of the show. In a tour/2 month period full of amazing highlights, one might say that this show is rather average, but average for Fall 73 is saying something. That's like saying a Europe 72 show is average for the tour. Average in that regard means "great," whereas great in that era means "transcendent."
Overall this is a very pleasing piece of music featuring every element that makes a good '73 show. Intense post-lyric truckin jamming feeding into long, jazzy jams, scary meltdowns, and beautiful thematic jamming to wrap things up before heading into a ballad. I don't give star ratings as a rule because they skew opinions, and especially because people's enjoyment of this, and all music, is so subjective that very few performances are objectively "great," within a few exceptions...

Interesting that with a band such as G.D. , so may posts are not about the music, per se. About quality, I was there, this show was better, that show was better, etc. Has anyone considered, just that this music exists, is a plus. Do some of you actually think that years ago, they were thinking about what soundboard and what format we would be listening to now? I have read somewhat about the band, and they were concerned about how there music sounded to the lsd laced audience. PLEASE, just enjoy the fact that the music is available even if you were at 1 concert or 348. To paraphrase Marshall McChluan, the music is the message, not the media. Although Marshall said the media is the message, who gives a shit, ogg, wmv, flv, mp3.

why dualism > why not?
The dualism of mind/body is old as the dirt we walk on, but none the less needs to be discussed at some point again. Thoughts: where would you think if you had to think about something inside your body? Are you sure it is your body to begin with really what if Jerry's body were the only body we had?? then what? why would that even matter but it does and does not in the duality of thought/body effects.
As we seem to enter into our body again during the base entrance where we all know it is the end of the jam., some how it is all pulled together there. Of course in this drama of dream sequences we may find the body and mind meaning less in there real sense of what is and is not. If we can even manage a stable theoretical existence of knowing that are body is somewhere we might find it again but there all is lost in the stream of these songs here.
So as someone in the audience states "go" or "Yo" we may find that broken angel in the end starting just on that word blip that breaks the dream of the real/unreal dualisms in timeless meaningless knowings of nothing else, as it is.

Subject: A little story about this show
I was at this show. Still have the ticket. I was in school at Boulder, drove to Denver early and snuck in the loading area. I was sitting with a little cassette tape recorder in about the 20th row for the sound check. No one else in the audience. After playing for about half an hour Kreutzman stands up from his drum kit, points at me and says "the kids got a mike!" Next thing I know Parrish, a big roadie, is chasing me around the coliseum with a plastic Fred Fiinstone club. He catches me, grabs my recorder but hands it back when I tell him I borrowed it. I head backstage as the band is coming off and tell Jerry that I already own all their albums and just wanted to tape for my own pleasure. He says "sure, htat's what they all say" and storms off. In this era they were not real happy about bootlegs and had yet to give the OK for audience taping. My cassette was eventually stolen out of my car. I do remember they did "The Race Is On" and that Lesh had to stop the music at one point becasue he was confused. It was a long time ago.

Its too bad the mix is fuzzy or not so clear. It reminds me of my old Maxell 120's. As I walk down this awesome road of show after show after show on the archive, its hard not to rate all of these shows high. I guess I have become sort of a snob for quality, just like when nug hit the scene and schwag was not worth it anymore. I have changed my D.O.C. to fine soundboards. Killer material here, just needs some remixing effort. If you want to know what I mean or what that sounds like look up brother Charlie "Killer" Miller's uploads. Still another good day of work put in by my favorite band. Peace

Subject: Nice find!
Even though this is only a piece of the show, it's the essential piece, with a lot of excellent jamming, some of it unique. The almost ridiculously high energy of Truckin' gives way to a bass solo that seques beautifully into the The Other One. Here's where the true magic of 73 Dead comes into play. After the meltdown jam, but before the Mind Left Body jam, comes a jam with it's own thematic structure that I don't think I've ever heard before. The Dead in this period produced a lot of music that could have led to songs if they'd thought to go back over the tapes and send them to Hunter and/or Barlow to add words. The "Tighten Up" and MLB jams are good examples of this.
Despite some vocal sloppiness in Truckin, and the fact that it's only a partial show, I have to give it 5 stars for the excellent sound and the uniqueness and splendor of the jamming out of The Other One. BTW, no way is this an audience tape. The sound is perfect except for a short patch in the Mind Left Body jam.

I don't remember whether I've got this in another format, but I want to give a big thanks to the poster. This is an outrageously good, jam-packed second set from 1973. The boys could really lay a great show on a 'hinterlands' crowd outside of the normal touring corridors, and this is definitely one of those. The Denver crowd really got a gem that night.
