What happened after Hampton? The Dead clearly had some favorite venues. The Greek and the Frost for example, on the West coast. MSG and Hampton Coliseum
...
in the East.
The guys are definitely on their game this night. I just listened to the second set, because that's where they play the stuff that really matters, and it's great here. Jerry's playing at the end of I Know You Rider is just explosive. Then they actually stay with Playin' for a while, not the longest but much longer than many attempts this year, and go into a seriously hot Uncle John's. This is the stuff. We get the kind of Space I like, with freaky noises, not at all boring, then the rest is standard but well-played.
By the way, the track titles are wrong. It's not a 21 minute China>Rider, it's a 12 minute China>Rider, a 9 minute Playin', a 10 minute UJB, and then Drums and Space are separate tracks. They didn't even do 21 minute China>Riders in 1974.

Never felt so free as I did in Hampton Colliseum those 3 nights. This sounds so much better than the crappy audience cassette i had. I remember some
...
bad blotter going around and people throwing beer bottles into the crowd at the entrance. I guess this was when all the frat boys started going on tour. I was just a pizza delivery driver that someone gave me cassettes of Hershey PA 85 and the Dane county february 73 to listen to while working one night. I was hooked and next thing you know i'm going through the whole rigamorale of mailorder. Anyway firstshow bias aside this has great energy throughout and great sound quality. No midi. Bob's tone is still clean without later crunchiness.

Hampton (4/14/84) was my first venue as well, and it was always a favorite stop on east coast spring tour in the 80's. This show features a long and good
...
setlist with solid, if unspectacular, versions of most tunes. Maybe it's not quite a 4, but it clearly deserves more than a 3.

travel with the Dead! I have to say they just amaze me more and more! The super six were clicking tonight! Great Bucket and even better Sugaree!!Stir It
...
Up was nice I was on the floor maybe 50 yards back on Jerry's side I turn and said WTH is it? Then a sweet Peggy-O and nobody mentions On The Road Again! I really wished Bobby had pulled this out instead of Stir It Up. Oh Mexicali again(I think they played this every show I was at). Jimmi Row is probably the best version I have heard? Great second set China Rider .#2 in 88 behind 4/1.

yet another fine Braverman effort, much appreciated... upon second listen, Stir It Up was indeed a trainwreck but if you were there live it didn't seem
...
nearly as bad.. people just started blazing up, well didn't start, but augmented the stunnage.
wheel>watchtower>black peter>one more sat. nite was a sweet way to wind up night one.
the Holiday Inn across the coliseum tranformed into Club Dead shortly thereafter; a surreal scene indeed... picture the indoor pool and jacuzzi area rife with 'heads... my central memory of that night was sitting in the hot tub smoking opium with a babe named Sherri.. this aesthetic was enhanced as we observed a scruffy fellow, with what looked like around a half-Z of herb just sitting there, casually twisting fatties at a poolside table while the uniformed security guard stood by nonplussed, not doing/saying a thing, as if this was completely routine behavior.
night two was more of the same, as we managed to get our hands on a glowing inflatable ball and chucked that around in the dark.
The Man can never take these and other moments away from me...

Subject: A show that ignites more in the first than second
Subject: A show that ignites more in the first than second
1st Set: Oh Yea! An accessibly dance-fever "Hell" opens up this three night stand in southern Virginia. Although Jerry's voice sounds reedy, the version
...
is capable and fluid. "Stir it Up" is cool just for the novelty and their attempt to assume a reggae beat. It wisps away as quickly as it came. "Minglewood" starts out rough but soon turns crunchy. "Peggy" has a steadying, if slightly too rapid, flow. "Mexicali" is just average as its casualness makes it disposable. Jerry's adornments rise "River" and "Row Jimmy" above standard fare. Notice how Jerry controls the pace with the patience and ease of his vocal presentation. "Stuck" is a warm yet intent and substantial way to continue the show. Jerry's singing "Might" with full purpose and is a nice gay way to end a part of the day.
2nd Set: A mellow but well-designed "China" opens up proceedings. Bobby's countering is twangily obvious but well-pronounced. "Rider" is also subdued thiugh they manage to pick up the intensity at the right places. "Playin" sounds good but lacks its own distinct mood. Continuing with the humane 'welcoming' themes of this evening's musical selections is "UJB." Like many of the tunes tonight, it starts out meekly uninpsired but picks up the juice near the end. I wish they could have followed Jerry's muse into some jammy, but the percussionists soon have me mexmerized as we dare to enter their jungle. A nice session. If you're skittish you should avoid the late 3's early 4's of "Space." They were circling around "Gimme" for 90 seconds before committing so its arrival is easily welcomed. Noone should be surprised that we're urged on by the wisdoms of "The Wheel." "Watchtower" is good ol' GD. "Black Peter" has moments of Jerry bluesy perfection. (around 3:00-3:10)There are also 'blah' untriumphant moments (5:25) "Saturday" I guess suffices for a closer, although noone sounded all that excited to be playing for 15K people.
Considering the show took a dip in the later's... "Knockin" is an appropriately dark finale. (soulfully played)

What can I say...I was a 17 y/o misfit from Hampton about to run off with the dead. Momma pleaded for me to stay at home...said she would help me later
...
if I would wait until school was out. I wouldn't listen...ok...back to the night...I was peddlin' some of those diamond blots. Some kind head had fronted me a bunch and I had made a good amount of money to finance my trip...nearly got busted at school...the brothers at kecoughtan loved me that week...hehehe. Anyways, I had not been dosin' for a long time...due to paranoia of getting busted and a bit of my own existintial delimma(one that haunts me to this day...go see I Heart Huckabees)...after the bisterin' first set...I knew I was missing out...well...some weirdo with a mohawk talked me into a couple of drops of liquid...right into my coca cola.
While waiting for the second set...I got to talking to this pretty young gal from Atlanta or somewhere...somehow I ended up dosing her and the lights went out. The show smoked...I saw al sorts of images coming from Bobby(I was center floor...right in fron of Bobby. That gal and me boogied the night away. During space I swore that a big chunk if the roof was moving...some ther guy with a jester hat says he saw the same thing as well...whatever. After the show the pretty gal told me it was the best time she had ever had...she gave me a hug and I never saw her again...wonder if she still remembers that night?
I remember leaving the venue only to find myself in a cold rain...I did find my car and swear I saw Brent walk by i the rain. On the way home I had a hallucination that a bridge was flooded out...I started backing away from the bride...open the door and looked down and the water was gushing by...I kept backing up...when I got to the top of the drive...I looked down by the bridge and say rain drops hitting the asphalt...what a strange feeling...it's happened a few times...someday I will tell you about my poo hallucination in Kansas with Henry Berger...nevermind...the purple cows did it.
To make a long story short...haven't been the same since...ain't it great!

out the second set from Jerry's side and what a good choice that was. You know how step out the door sometimes and when the sun hits your face you just smile because it feels so good? Well, that's what China Cat did to me and I still get that feeling everytime I hear it.

Hampton was always special, but I have always thought words failed to describe this run. And I was at the Warlock's shows. Bobby's pink guitar, his long
...
hair. Garcia's short hair. The Stir it up attempt this night. The rich matrix sound from Healy and how it transfered to tape. Yes, the next night gets all the pub, but I thought that 3/26 was equal for its own reasons.
Blistering China>Rider>Playin>UJB>drumz. 1988 gets bashed by some for the lack of jams but the band is oh so tight and the sound oh so rich (I said that already),that I just smile with the memories. The highlight for me this night was Peggy-O. It dripped with Garcia. Or was that just me? We all met this guy Donavan who made our Jujifruits a little more flavorful. I would shut my eyes and see Red/Blue explosions, and China Cat was right in time.
