25
The Other One
Released on a Road Trips.
6
Sugaree
Short, sweet, and soulful. This is sock-hop slow song happiness. Also 3 other words that start with S. (RT vol1, no3)
8
Cryptical Envelopment
The vital cryptical reprise that climaxes like all the best crypticals do. Is it 2/13/70 or 5/2/70??? No, but its damn good.
17
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Great version. Most notable is Phil. Love the transition...Phil and Bob lead the charge.
1
Playin' In The Band
Clanging and banging in all the right ways for the '71 sound. Has so much energy packed into it you can hear how it will explode over the next year.
4
Loser
Snarling guitar solo and great organ sound in an excellently mixed (Bobby audible always a plus) SBD. The whole first set is sweet heady goodness.
3
Casey Jones
They announce the set-break, then decide to blow out the tubes on this one, capping one of the best 1st sets of 1971.
3
Bird Song
Intricate zigzagging solo work from Jerry, tight ensemble playing. Doesn't ever "soar" like some of them, but more exploratory and compelling.
12
Wharf Rat
Extremely powerful. Strong vocals, massive sound, tremendous jam, great mix. Coming off 30 minutes of TOO like a parachute from the ionosphere.
4
Bertha
Summer '71, hoppin' bass, spirited vocals, Miller board...
6
Truckin'
Hard edged blues metal - whole bands goin' for it.
2
Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad
Phil just motorboatin his ass all over this one - excellent AWBYGN trasnition to the NFA screamer
6
Sugar Magnolia
They take a bite, chew it up and spit it out - room was spining and Jer was grining with the string bending
2
El Paso
Quality slower version. Bob’s voice is beautiful when he sings ‘good’ in ‘goodbye’ at the end
