Masons to Wolverines
Not only had they played earlier in the year at the giant Masonic Temple, they returned to the area less than a year later (Pine Knob 27Aug80) - four shows, four venues, 1yr 7mos. Possibly four different promoters? The Crisler Center is the basketball arena for U of Mich. They had played this campus twice before, playing 3 shows in '67 & '71. But it would be a decade before they returned, playing nearby Detroit and Pine Knob instead. This is the end of what was an above average tour with a few quite notable shows. Though solid, this show is average '79; if you want to start with the tour peaks try 10/25 or 10/31. The 1st set is a Bobby set - he's having a great show. The long 2nd set has an "extra" song before Drums.
First Set. This is Brent's first Cold Rain & Snow. There were only 3 in '78 and it hadn't been played since January. The ship begins the journey for the fine Minglewood. T for Detroit City - saying this does NOT make UofM students happy. They like to think they are a long way from Detroit. Jer extends the "pretty" solo for Peggy-O. The SBD starts in El Paso. An AUD patch is needed for High Time - not a remarkable one but Jer puts it all on stage nonetheless. Conversely, Me & My Uncle is super-effortless and Big River is so Jer-ish, like he can't help himself. After a middling Ramble, Looks Like Rain is surprisingly good, with prepared synth and Brent on organ. Passenger isn't the tour's best but still fine. Jer seems a little thrown at first by the tempo of Deal.
Second Set. Alabama is the 4th one, and still improving. Brent pwns this Promised Land. The lifeless Ship of Fools underscores how much this is a Bobby show. He then tells his nightly joke, prompting Billy to counter "Tell 'em a better one!". Jer: Let's hang Bob Weir! Billy:Tell 'em a good one. Bobby: God knows I tried, Bill. Jer: Hey Weir, that's not even a bad joke - that's lower than a bad joke. Even though Samson & Delilah is not as inventive as 10/28, or even 11/1, it's still awesome. Terrapin has a nice jam section at the end of Lady with a Fan - and an unnoted reel flip near the end of about half a minute. Playin' has a solid jam section and doesn't resolve to final lyrics. Space is almost modal, and more jazzy than spacey. This is a downtempo and bluesy version of Not Fade, albeit sleepy. Some nice stuff near the end though. The rest are average '79. There's another cut in the end solo of Black Peter. Note how Brent already has Saturday Night wired up.
1st Set: C+
2nd Set: C+
Overall = 3 stars
Highlights:
Me & My Uncle - super effortless
Big River - like Jer can't help himself
Looks Like Rain - Brent makes it with synth & organ
Samson & Delilah - still great
SOURCES: An AUD never circulated (at least on lists I saw), but when a SBD finally appeared it had AUD patches - the mysterious source of which is not in the text file, nor on common trees/tracker lists. Compounding search issues, this date is used to index outtakes from Go to Heaven sessions. The clugston_14108 is the original willy_10457 SBD composited with the AUD and repitched. Thanx, Scott C! Alabama, Promised Land & Passenger are on Road Trips 1-1. In one of GDP's worst mastering errors, the pitch is very slow, needing +3% adjustment for correct playback.

"average" Fall 1979 = a high bar
After another listen, I agree with the more recent commentators
i.e. perhaps average for Fall 1979, but a high bar. Garcia's final Passenger solo (3:20-5:20) has hurricane-force licks. And my earlier header ---"last night of the tour" --- was a bit off, as they were back on the road two weeks later.

Earlier review:
" April 23, 2005 Last night of the tour
The Cold Rain sounds like an audience recording. It's well played; a nice little solo from Garcia; interesting Weir chops; good Brent swirling organ at the end. To be continued...
Generally here, Lesh, Weir and Brent seem full of energy, but Garcia is a little lagging. Promised Land is fairly energetic for all four, sharper sound than Cold Rain. Ship of Fools is almost nine minutes, taken at a very slow pace even for a ballad. Garcia's solo is extremely quiet; he sticks to the few notes comprising the melody, and does not venture further. Sugar Magnolia starts slow, but picks up the pace later on.
There may yet be some gems in here, but overall, it feels like an average night, but not a bad night, for Garcia."

very enjoyable show like the Nassaus
Jerry's in pretty good form on Cold Rain, High Time, Alabama and Black Peter. Passenger is vintage.

Time and chemistry may interfere with my memory...
... but I think Jerry was having technical problems with his guitar that night, and it was inhibiting his play. I remember him stopping playing several times, and roadies swarming around him fiddling with his guitar. I remember admiring how Bob stepped his efforts up, a tribute to the quality of his work at the time.
This was my first show, by the way, I had general admission tickets but a buddy at U of M helped seat me and my friend in the 4th row. My relatively high rating of the show is partially nostalgia driven.

Less is More
Jerry's kindof laying back, layin shit down 'like it's the definitive version', as on countless other nights. The 'Passenger', to me, is a REAL screamer. All told it sounds like a very energetic night I wish I could've been at.

passenger == amazing
haven't listened to the rest of this show yet, but the Passenger is the coolest version I've ever heard regardless of year. Fantastic, explosive dynamics. Worth hearing for that reason if no other.

Very cowboy first set. Show itself is a bit mediocre for 79. The post-space is nice because there's a lot of stuff there (almost 40 min of music), unlike many other shows from this era. Decent sounding show, but there's better shows out there.

Fine
Pretty standard stuff especially for 1979. If you were there I am sure you had a good time and agree Brent is cutting loose on Passenger among other things. It's a good listen, 20 min Playin, great NFA, 17 min Black Peter. I can see why folks that were liked it...

My first show
Great to hear it again - thanks so much for the streamed content.
Didn't know enough to know if it was a good show but we had a great time. We thought Peggy-O, Terrapin and Ship of Fools were highlights.
Listening now the show seems more poignant than energetic. But that's OK if that's what you're in the mood for.
Still a great experience from camping out overnight at Crisler to get floor seats to cooling out afterwards.
Any chance a link can be added to download?
Thanks.
