The jams in the last set with The Airplane are fucking SICK!!!! Highly listenable AUD tape by 1970 standards, as well.

The sound clip a the end of "tuning" is shaped like an airplane. Coincidence or conspiracy?

Me being the HFT fan to and extreme in the mid 70s thanks to my NYC buddies, this was one of those shows that was always on the radar, my copy was pathetic! But, I loved it. Our brains had not been softened by the crunchy crispy SBDs of the 80s and on, Betty Boards and what not, so we had to train our brains to get into tapes like this and then they sounded great, they really did (do). Something about an audience tape, it just sounds more "real". After a few minutes of concentrating on this fine show, I am completely good with it. Not quite the Hollywood Bowl '71 which has set the bar so high, it's a fun show with unique jams. Thanks!

This is very cool. A friend of mine found this for me. I was a senior at the U of R at the time. I remember the basketball team had a scrimmage against Canisius around 8 AM the next morning. There was an un-named member of the team sitting by me at the show. He was heavily under the influence like a lot of us, but he was jumping around on the court about 7 hours later looking fresh a daisy.

My first Dead show. And what a doozy and scene it was (for pre-med, egghead, army brat, 21 yo me), considering it was upstate NY university. Hopped on that bus! Lots and lots of good stories from that concert! My recollection is that it was a (Lesh-Jerry-Mickey) NRPS set, then an acoustic Dead, then 3 electric Dead sets, at least the last one of which had Jorma. I sooo wish I also had that Jerry NRPS set-- psychedelic pedal steel ("get off the wah-wah pedal, son" is the punchline to one of the stories). I remember Lesh trying to coax Jack on stage, e.g. playing the "White Rabbit" riff at him, but I don't recall Jack actually getting on stage. Whew, Jorma stinging guitar is my memory.

Huge thanks, peter_r for liberating that tape from Stone. I/we played that tape literally many many dozens of times over the decades, and shared it far and wide. Myth is that y'all (was "Fred J" one of them?) did an infamous creep-along-the-ledge from one window to the next on the outside (as we did in so many of the dorms to break into each others' rooms) to get into Stone's room. I remember some of us watching Stone and friend do the recording at the concert. They didn't bring enough tape with them for the long concert so they kept making hasty decisions about what to record over, thus the odd cut-offs and flips.

i was @ the airplane show,same night. airplane played @ roch.war memorial. i was on stage, rolling "j's", on jack's equipment box,the band said the city wouldn't let the band jam w/dead there,so..anyone who could,should b-line it over to u of r,for a "jam".we did, and had a great time. following year,10.26.71,was my b-day,dead played,w/new riders opening,jerry played pedal steel w/riders,and the show was broadcasted live on an fm radio show. u of r was the site for tgat one. any good recordings of that one?

While this recording is definitely not the best and is fraught with weird cuts, this is still worth a listen. "Good Lovin'" is one of the better versions I've heard from 1970 and the last set jams with Jorma produce some pretty great music. This show is certainly worthy of more attention than it gets.

This show really rocks - fairly standard interpretations of the songs but tight and full of energy. If there was a SBD it would probably be one of Dick's Picks.

I was a student at the UofR at the time and was at the show and helped put it on for the college's concert committee (in partnership with the owner of the Red Creek Inn). Jorma et al. came over from the War Memorial after the Airplane's show ended earlier that night. Having the Airplane there was a kick, and I thought it was a better more energized show than the one at the UofR on 10-26-71, although that was a good show and is on a Deadstore CD now. I don't remember the song order so no help there.

This encoding is almost certainly from cassettes with significant drop outs - I have the "originals" If somebody wants to do a better job, let me know at peterr@snowcrest.net. The story is: Yes, airplane played the war memorial that night and yes, Jorma and Jack did play, Grace announced that she'd love to sing for us but her voice was trashed.... There was a student named Bob Stone who made the live hand-held recording ( I don't know what equipment), intending to sell bootlegs on campus at U of R. I, and a few fellow dead-heads, conspired to liberate the music. Bob went away one weekend and we broke into his dorm room, "borrowed" the tapes, and recorded them from a Nakamichi cassette deck onto a TEAC open reel deck at 7.5 IPS using maxell tape. We rented an EQ from a local pro audio shop ( I forget the details). We then copied the master tape and made dubs for anyone who wanted them, but lots of what is out there is almost certainly 2nd or 3rd generation. My tapes DO suffer from absences in the late set with the airplane, but not some of the drop-outs and reel-flips or "nearby radio station".

For years I have been hoping a soundboard from this show would surface. In the interim if somebody wants to re-encode this one-of-a-kind show, I will gladly share....

Interestingly, McNally's book says Jorma was in town on his way to visit family in Ottawa, but Airplane did play that night at War Memorial Auditorium.

This is an average aud for '70 and there are quite a few cuts. There are some interesting jams with Jorma and Good Lovin' is a standout, but now that we're all spoiled, I wouldn't recommend this show. Stick with the Capitol Theater shows from earlier in the month.

THe Airplane played Rochester the same night. I think their show was at the Memorial Auditorium, but it's been 34 years, so it may have been a different venue. Darling Corey changed my life

Does any one know how Jorma happend to be in Rochester at the same time of this show??? He plays during the last set.
