Yeah, first time played for TOG. We were literally scratching our heads at the new tune, let alone for the encore. The Playing riff throughout was a bit
...
weird- but the show was ok. Saw better shows that tour, and later that year. Blew a tire on the 95 bridge over the Susquehanna at around 2am going home to Delaware...scary change of tire on the side of the interstate in the middle of the night dosed to high heaven....quite the night

After 1973 a lot of sets became sort of formulaic. This is anything but and I love the playing. Great sounding recording. I caught the Cap Center show
...
the year before and it was also a nice one.

I can't tell you how many shows i walked out of where people around me complained. "They should have played...(fill in the blank)." "I didn't like the
...
____ jam." "I can't believe they played ____ again."
Jerry is gone, and I hear people brag about how many shows they have seen. People paid thousands (too rich for me!) to see the Fare Thee Well shows. It just seems strange for people to bash this show at the Cap Center.
It was my second show, and I LOVED IT! So proud to have seen the first Touch of Grey. I saw MANY MANY shows over the next 13 years, and LOVED EVERY SHOW I ATTENDED. I miss the boys, and would welcome a chance to dive back and see this show again.
I realize every show wasn't awesome - but if it was the Dead - it was good enough for me. I miss the boys - as they were in the day - and came back here to listen to a show that was very near and dear to me. Kinda sad to hear so many bash this one.
One man gathers what another man spills. I heard a Head one day shouting "If you have never seen the Dead - THEY SUCK! - sell me your ticket."
I wish some of you had given a miracle to someone who would appreciate it. You wasted the ticket if you think this show sucked.

It seems that commentary is mixed for this show.
I have always had a soft place for '82 shows b/c that is when I got on board. But I must admit to not ... being privy to this show.
First, not sure if the jams were official - but 3 playin jams? Plus the opening!? Wow. I think the sound is hindered a bit during the opening 2 #'s - but the rest of the show is pretty clear.
Rooster - someone else said - is HOT. Going into that blues number from a playin's jam? What a call by Weir. Roses is normally a meloncholy feel song for me - but again, how they come out of it into another jam and then Let it Grow. Day Job notwithstanding...this is a great set.
Not the best Shakedown ever, but not too shabby. I personally know I am in the minority on this, but I liked sailor>saint. Seemed like a chance to really build into a frenzy (saint) from a reflective song (sailor).
I think this might have been the last year they would play NotFade AND Good Lovin' in the same set - let alone the same section (ie post drumz) and both versions are solid.
I recommend the show (aud patches and all).
Thanks and God Bless 4 and 1/2

Funny Heathen ...ur right.
About this show: sounds like they're speeding/muddling out of control. There were alot of good cap center shows, but this ... one sounds like they were a little "hyped". It may have been fun being there ( on 10 microdots ), but not as fun here. Starting in the jam songs seemed to eschew the rest of the show. Let it grow starts in the full melt of the sequence that is supposed to be the jam and the end spins nowhere with everyone all over the place. Listen to JG's turns during the jam while everyone else is someplace else. Follow that up with the scrumptuous Day Job and the let the air our of the 1st set and take that momentum into a second set Shakedown where Jerry sounds like a cat wailing for a can of tuna in an alley. The only harmony in that song is in the "whoo". Somebody must a dosed the coke that night.
As far as this recording: had to turn it down for the loud pitch that was squeeling from the hiss in the recording.
There's got to be a better copy of this ragged show.

I was at this show -- it made a giant sucking sound. Mississippi half-assed set list, with uninspired playing. Please folks, some standards if you will.

This is a great one. The first set seemed like a second set. The second set is way better than its setlist would indicate... the jam into NFA is incredible,
...
as is Stella.
There is a new, wonderful FOB out there... allegedly same source as the patches in here, but it's far superior. Seek it out and enjoy.
My 4* rating would be 5* if the better version was here.

Subject: Great show, good quality
This is a better sounding show than it is in sound quality. First of all, this review only counts for the first set becuase that's what I've listened
...
to so far. The first set playing is at least a 4.5. They did some unique things in this, ostensibly starting off with Playin In The Band, but also coming back to it several times throughout the night. Dupree's...is usually a treat, it isn't played all that often. Let It Grow has a furious middle section that I'm proud of. 4.5/5
The sound quality isn't as good, it does start of as a better than average AUD, then goes into a hissy SBD. The SBD has a better mix of bass though, and that partially compensates for the hiss. 3/5
So I give this a 4 stars.

Personally, while the Aud/SBD differentiation is there, I usually just listen for the playing. To me, to major diffderence between audience and SBD is
...
how well you can really feel and hear Phil. Then again, that;s why I love the Dead.
Anyway, this set list is one of those crazy, out of synch reasons that represent part of why we kept going and going. One, to hear and feel that "whiff," and two, to see that unconventional thang that would remind us of 1971 or (insert year here______)...
As a part-time professional bass player, I'd have pushed the envelope on this, and had Phil open an occasional show with "The Other One" just to blow a few more minds. Imagine someone there moaning because they missed the first two hours of the show, and it's just 8:45? But having Playin' as an opener is cool, and the first set is very good. Second set tails a bit, so I give it a 4.

There was definitely something in the air this night...to open with 'Playing in the Band'? What?Followed by Crazy Fingers? As I remember this one, Jerry
...
basically didn't stop playing the entire first set. None of those five minute tuning/smoke breaks. I do remember this being one of the hottest 'Roosters' I ever heard live or otherwise, and I never really even liked the song that much. After the show, we walked out in the parking lot and the passenger window of my car was shattered in a million little pieces. At the time, I thought it was really beautiful, all those little sparkly things everywhere. I wasn't as thrilled the next morning.

Definitely an audience recording until somewhere in the middle of Crazy Fingers, and the cassette tape hiss after that is significant. Great show musically,

but audio quality is less than ideal. For those with discerning ears, wait until a better copy is posted before downloading this show.

This was the first ticket I ever bought from the Grateful Dead...$12.50...lol...gone are the days. Anyway, the show smokes with Playing in the Band theme
...
running through out the show. The second set is the kicker. From Shakedown to the end, it is great jamming. The jam out of space in NFA is really grooving and this Stella Blue is probably the best I have ever heard, you can feel every note. As Bob said during St. of Circumstance "what the fuck you gonna do now!"...download this show. It will be worth it.

So yeah, this show was fun. I was at school on the eastern shore of Maryland. I had come back from the UVA show and was doing the scales thing....study
...
or dead show?ÃÂ study or dead show? The scales thing didn't last long. Anyway, IÃÂm surprised that no previous reviewer mentioned that this was the first ÃÂTouch of GreyÃÂ ever performed live. That to me is soooo significant. Their popularity skyrocketed w/ that song to the point where the idea of playing at a zooÃÂor a college gym quickly became a thing of the past. The live Dead experience was an intimate live evening. I think in retrospect that this was the beginning of the endÃÂat least for me. I never found the intimacy of giants stadium worth much.
Anyway, So I was standing next to my friend Bob who I had just met a school. He was a great guy, a little preppyÃÂbut one hell of a partierÃÂso we got along just fine. We were hanging together for the encore when they started Touch of Grey. I thought it was Bertha which would have been fine. Then I quickly noticed that it was a tune that was new to me. Anyway, I turned to Bob and said, I donÃÂt know this one. He said ÃÂI donÃÂt either. But I like itÃÂitÃÂs kinda snappyÃÂ.
I like Touch. But itÃÂs bitter sweet. First big time hit that really appealed to the masses. Always be careful what you wish for.
It's only a cooincidence that I picked D-Day 2005 to write this review.

The playin and part of crazy fingers are patched with the aud. I think this was because the band came out early and the house lights were still on. This
...
was a really fun show and the recording is real nice the aud could be better but can't complain about getting the whole show. I know they played the heck out of sailor/saint around this time period but it was so cool with the purple and blue lights during the rain falling down part. Also in the first set they tease the heck out of playin before ending the jam and going into roses. This jam DOES NOT segue into the next song it is a stand alone jam that really messed with my head.
