Great in Spots
Always liked this "tape", had it on cassette for years. First set was pretty snappy in spots. Jerry rough around the edges, but gets going. The highlight is Shakedown>Playing. The vocal outro's are pretty spirited.....A little slow to get going, Jerry really starts snapping out some skank in the Shakedown Jam, playing right against the drummers beats and is in complete command of the beat. Bluesy, authoritative, snappy.
The Playing jam is sublime. You can really hear the depth of Garcia's vocabulary as a guitarist. long flowing lines, uncanny phrasing and timing. One of the best late era Playing jams. My tape thankfully ran out during Dear Mr. Fantasy

Great but . . .
Disc 3 seems to be from a different source. Discs 1 and 2 have GREAT sound but are a half step slow. Disc 3 is the correct pitch, but muffled sounding compared to the other 2 discs.

tedious actually
this show suffers from all the usual 1984 stuff. the tug o' war over china doll or mister fantasy is awful. the playin reprise is full of obvious clams. shakedown is ok but really lacks any punch. jerry does not sound well. liked the must have been the roses
ok.this is such a well written song that it's hard not to dig it just on its own merit alone.

Was there too
Yes, I remember this, and the two previous night's shows. The thing I remember most about the shows, aside from the first DMF and (I believe) first Scarlet>Touch of Grey, was how happy Jerry looked. You could get much closer to the stage at RR those days before they expanded the stage. Also, the weather. The previous night, a hail storm missed the ampitheatre by mere chance ...Thank you for sharing

Playin Transition
The transition from Playin' into Dear Mr. Fantasy is one for the books. Jerry tries to take it into China Doll with Bob fizzling out Playin', and Brent eases in with his vocal strain serenading the audience with Fantasy. The end result is one of the most beautiful and inspiring transitions I have heard to date.

First Mr Fantasy
I was there. to this day gives me chills. Gotta imagine Bobby walks of the stage (goin into drums) Jerry starts off the stage and stops and stands in front of Brent and just takes him right into it!!! goose bumps 4sure. great to get good soundboards from the red rocks. air is sooooooo thin at that altitude the soundboard runs wide open and sounds like a transistor radio. audience recordings are thin also. I know I taped that night.

I Love 84 Dead
Grate show from beginning to end. Huge Iko to begin. I love Jerry on this, the band is nice and tight too. Nice jammed out Cassidy. A sweet Roses. Followed by a serious Minglewood. Jerry takes a huge turn on his second solo and he just rips it with some wicked runs. A short but good BEW, with a nice solo by Jerry. A good hard Jackie follows. Day Job is Day Job.
Second set is SWEET!! A very funky shakedown. Its not a speed version, but its very groovy. Jerry takes a grate solo for the in verse jam and then goes crazy after the poke around vocal jam. Very funky wah-wah solos and he just goes forever. Awesome version. The Playin is very deep. The whole band is in synch; its an awesome version. Into Dear Mr. Fantasy, which is awesome with Jerry and Brent sharing the vocals. A grate solo by Jerry also. Into Drums>Space. The back end of this show is strong. A good Playin Reprise into a powerhouse version of Black Peter, nice searing solos by Jerry and he is just singing his heart out. The 84 Peters are pure emotion and pain. The "Run and See" is very powerful with Jerry repeating it about 4 times. Good stuff. Into a grate Throwing Stones. Very nice solo by Jerry and the whole band is just super tight. Bobby's 84 hoarse vocals are near and dear to my heart. Into a very good NFA. Finish with a good Ole US Blues.
Overall, this is a grate show and def one of the best of 84. Very tight, crisp playing, good vocals all around, and good jamming. A must for 84 fans and good for the 84 haters too.
Highly Recommended

Pretty Uninspiring Stuff...
The Aiko is ok...but really this is a pretty listless and uninspiring show. The Shakedown has zero snap..which, for me, makes the show almost unlistenable.
It gets 3 stars for the sounds quality, which is "A" quality...so if you are interested in '84, then this is a great one to listen to...after all it is the Dead. How bad could it be...however, for comparison and to be amazed at what was lost in a single year, please check the Shakedown opener at the Spectrum, 4.26.83.

7 Song first though and mediocre dear mr fantasy (see 7/4/87 Foxboro or Portland, ME) Good NFA but not the best - Fun show to be sure, but not quite Princeton is it Joel?

IKO
very demanding Iko, requiring your complete attention, as they come from the top, bottom, both sides, and everywhere inbetween on this one. Not sure if its my favorite or best Iko, but definately close! Vocals are stong, and as one said, you can probably find peices of Jerrys lung's on Ebay. Left him sounding like Kermit the Frog on his small parts in Cassidy.
Jack Straw left nothing to the imagination, and I assure you, they did not leave the stage!
BTW did anyone catch Jerry fighting for a China Doll as Brent opened up his Fantasy lyrics?

good schtuff!!!
I attended this one and the second set was excellent. First Dear Mr. Fantasy was epic. The only better Aiko I have heard is 6-24-85. St. Stephen tease before NFA. Enjoy!!

Darn Tootin'
That Iko is the best one ever. I'd say better than Rochester.
After that opener, my friend and I turned to each other and said "They could leave the stage now and no one would bitch."
The US Blues is none too shabby either. It was Flag Day and they did a bang-up job on it.
Get. This. Show. (Or at least the Iko).

IKO, IKO
Best Iko ever, nothing even comes close....mabye Rochester '80 but this is grungy, low down dirty playing with Garcia belting out lyrics with chunks of his lung hitting the adoring audience...Second set looks better on paper than it actual performance. Still get this for the Iko>Cassidy>Roses....great board too
