This show is all it’s cracked up to be - super hot from beginning to end. The entire thing is great, but the Hard to Handle, Loser, Me & Bobby McGee and Brokedown Palace might ALL be top 5 fave versions for me. The H2H is without question #1 all time IMO. My rating is a no brainer: 5/5.

The Hard to Handle version from this show is the known for many things. It is arguably the best version and also when Jerry's guitar strap breaks and he goes to one knee and crowd acknowledges! Towards the end of the solo. An excellent 1971 show!

This was the show that started it all for me. Digital age deadhead, so it was my first download and first AUD from nugs.net (when that was still a free site with many handpicked shows to choose from).
15 years and a hundred listens later I still come back to this show. Justly famous as greatest AUD of the era, and maybe all time. Best rendition of a pre-jam Playin', soul-stirring solos in almost every song, the arguably greatest of all time Hard to Handle and Lovelight, top 3 all time Bertha, and a one-of a kind Other One/Uncle sandwich that is eerie to the point of being sublime.
A+ recording of an A+ show, that has seen (partial) official release four times.
Get the Charlie Miller pitch corrected version of this AUD, and get his matching SBD for the missing El Paso (and some nuances not captured on the AUD).

I produced this concert. It was one of many many great shows working with the Dead. This one was special in that we had just made an exclusive deal for producing concerts at the Palladium, and this was one of the show that put the Palladium and our company, Pacific Presentations on the map. This is a great recording of a great high energy performance.

Subject: Special 50th Anniversary Story !!
Subject: Special 50th Anniversary Story !!
Everyone talks about what happened when they were at these two shows at the Hollywood Palladium. In 1971, I was a surfer hippie from Orange County—roll one and go surfing—everybody understands that. The only bummer about ‘71 is all these surfers from OC became Jesus Freaks. Sorry about that, but it was not my fault. It would be interesting to see where all those losers are now. So, I was 17 & I bought two tickets to take a very pretty SurfGirl to see the Dead at the Hollywood Palladium’s August 6th show. We met a friend with his date there & scored a table to sit & watch the show. That was even more kool because the tables were hard to get & they had a great view of the show, the stage & the crowd. This SurfGirl had a crush on me & I thought a first date seeing the Grateful Dead was a Special Thing. WELL HECK, IT WAS A SPECIAL THING. Jerry Garcia was 30 feet away & played pedal-steel for a full set with NRPS, then he played a full night with our boys. It only took 15 minutes into NRPS when my SurfGirl excused herself to the bathroom—well that’s sort of normal. So after 20 minutes I thought it was still normal, then it turned into 1 hour, then 1 ½ hours, then 3 hours, and of course, the whole show. Since it was a Dead show & a great night, I thought she found her true psychedelic SurfDude, and she was out dancing with him. I thought I was bum-out-of-luck. BUT, when the lights came back on in the Hollywood Palladium, my SurfBabe came back to our table. Her hair was wet & she was drained from crying for 3+ hours in the toilet stall. I asked her what was wrong & she screamed “what is your problem?…you didn’t even notice I was gone....I told you I was going to the bathroom….and you left me in there for 4 hours….why didn’t you save me from these hairy miscreants?…” What? Really? What?? I am so sorry beautiful young surfgirl, if only I had known, I would have risked all to save you from the hippies—even getting thrown out of the Hollywood Palladium for hanging out in the wrong bathroom. That would have been a small price to pay! Except Jeez, it never really occurred to me that girls hide in bathroom stalls & cry when they get scared. I tried to be understanding, but I was not sensitive enough. Things did not get better after that. To say the least, it was a very long drive back to Huntington Beach.
To all the gals who read this, I honestly thought we could have a nice date & evening. I was young too. I was not trying to take a teenage girl to a free-love hippie fest.
True Story. No BS.

Jerry's solo in Hard to Handle is the best guitar solo in the long and illustrious history of guitar solos. I don't care if you disagree.
And this is probably the best Aud of any Dead show. You're right there in the middle of the floor and this crowd is in a frenzy. Hang on!
I don't even mind the Woo-Woo guy in Casey Jones as I'd probably have lost my mind at this show too.
Every song here is the quintessential version of that song. If you don't download this and play it all the time then you're just not living life to the fullest extent possible.

Don't remember how I came across this, but I'm so glad I did. It's one of my favorite recordings/shows now. Something about the tone of this recording I absolutely cannot get enough of...Jerry's guitar just sound sooo fucking sick, and Phil's bass comes through on the bottom end soo welll. I wish I could turn this set into a guitar pedal. I'd never use anything else..

What a great show and recording! The clarity of the music and audience reaction is fantastic, almost like a Matrix (SBD+AUD).
I compared a few parts of the show with the other audience recordings and this one was the winner. One or two of the others had wrong pitch, and Bobby's leads got lost in the mix.
Listening to the whole show now and impressed by how great they're playing.

My friend Larry saw his first show the night before and loved it so much, he talked me and another friend to go to this show. Unfortunately, we only had about $5 between the three of us. Tickets were $5.50 at the door. Then a really loaded guy stumbled upon us and Larry reminded him of his deceased brother. He GAVE us the rest of the money to get in. What a story to tell to get into your first show and were given the money to do it. Larry was RIGHT. The Dead were great! Pigpen was in good form that night. This recording is excellent for a fan recording. Someone asked what guitar Garcia played that night. It was either a Stratocaster or Les Paul. I think these were his primary ones until getting Wolf from Alembic in 1973.

I have always loved the Port Chester/Capitol Theater show--set two--from June 1970, both the music and the crowd insanity and the one guy who keeps getting his face stolen. Now this show is an apples and oranges comparison but equally the best. Amazing playing, amazing AUD recording, great crowd. Hard to Handle, MAMU and the Other One are tops.

...For telling the taper how to get a better sound on his recording! This sounds is excellent for an audience tape!
Solid 1st set. Jerry just won't let up in Hard to Handle, and the audience is really worked up.
The Other One -> Me & My Uncle -> Other One is really something. Very dark and wild TOO, and the jam coming out of Me & My Uncle is beautiful. Drums are on point throughout, and Bobby manages not to flub any lyrics.
Lovelight ends as a barnburner, with Pig screaming his lungs out!

Thanks to the dozens of previous reviewers. Scroll down to the bottom and "Heap" nailed it back in 2004. I have never heard a better audience recording and the audience noise actually enhances my enjoyment. I've been listening to many Dead shows lately and enjoying the many soundboards available on Concert Vault and others. But this performance just seemed to explode relative to the many other excellent shows I've been listening to. I am not a big Pigpen fan but "Too Hard to Handle" is a great version and I can't think of any other song that equals Jerry's guitar passion on this track. Thanks to the band and to the inspired taper who managed to get this fantastic recording.

I was fortunate to get the soundboard of this show before it was too late.... but this AUD is outstanding, and has just the right amount of crowd noise for my liking.
Absolutely my favorite show of all time. I love their sound in this year, and this show in particular, and recordings of this quality, from that era, are rare.
IMO, the Bobby Mc Gee is the best I've heard. Bobby's vocal is very relaxed, and Jerry's solo is AMAZING, every note just caressed. And very different than just a few nights later in Berkley. Bobby Mc Gee may not be a show stopper or smokin' hot, but listen to this one a few times in a row, and you will be all like damn, I love that song!

This was the first time I saw the Grateful Dead, and I was blown away. The Palladium was so crowded and hot and you couldn't move, but the music was so great it didn't matter. The New Riders opened up, and I got to see Garcia play pedal steel with them. What a night! Funny thing, I was standing right behind this guy that was holding a full size reel to reel tape recorder. I don't know how the hell he managed to do it, but he did. He had two guys holding microphones, one way to the left and one way to the right. The mic cables must have been at least 25 or 30 feet long, and these guys were holding the microphones up over the crowd. Pigpen was in great form that night and Garcia was playing his ass off, the band was on fire. I'm so glad those guys made that tape! It would have only been a distant memory.

I was browsing along and this show seemed to have a good variety of songs and is from my favorite era of the Dead, so I figured it would be a good experiment to see how it worked. I can't believe it: quality, energy, a rowdy crowd... What more could you ask for??? Good show to end any arguments with people who choose not to love the Dead, there is some obvious energy exchange between the crowd and the boys (or vice versa???)

This particular recording is hands down my favorite Grateful Dead artifact. I've always been partial to AUD recordings, the ambiance and feel amplify the music, even if the quality isn't always as good. This is a rare gem in that the quality is phenomenal, and the ambiance is top notch as well.
The playing as well is lights out. I die every time I hear the Other One > Me & My Uncle > Other One. Two of my absolute favorite Dead songs played phenomenally.
If the feel is right, this is a great place to start someone on the Dead.

Did anyone else notice that during the other one jam Bobby plays the opening phrase of the Weather Report Suite a few times? I didn't realize that was how it developed...pretty damn cool...and the rest of this show is sick..i love the feel of the early jams...so much more bluesy than what developed (both are excellent in their own right)

I'll never forget the first time I heard this version of Hard to Handle on Fall out from the Phil Zone! Both the Bobby solo and Jerry solo are raging! My next memory is the blistering Other One that just slides into Me & My Uncle! I laughed out loud when I first heard that! It sounds amazing! This IS the GOOD 'OLE GRATEFUL DEAD! This whole tape has amazing sound quality the whole way through but I think the previous reviewer is right about the pitch problem! I never noticed that before! Oh well, it still sounds boss! Peace.

Superb.
This is tooooo good, y'know?
This is so phattening it should be illegal.
One of the most amazing and beautiful AUD's on the block. Hand's down.
Great performance right out of the gate with much hot and heavy energetic phrasing ala Garcia.
GDP shouldn't have wasted so much time and money releasing the "Houseboat Tapes." They should have just released this recording as is in its stead. It would have been fine -- actually, it's better. It has more life than any SBD but it is not inundated with annoying handclaps and such.

Feldspar, Why would you want someone to commercially release this show? So we have to pay to listen to it. Obviously it would be a blockbuster, but the download count proves that. I don't think Jerry would want us paying for anything (besides studios of course), keep free and responsible use alive!

The Dead had two releases that contained portions of this show:
Dick's Picks Volume 35 had these songs: The Other One > Me & My Uncle > The Other One - Deal - Sugar Magnolia - Morning Dew - Turn on your Lovelight
Their Download Series, which you could only get by downloading it from dead.net had these songs: Bertha - Mr. Charlie - Cumberland Blues - Brokedown Palace - Hard to Handle
I'm not sure if you can still download it from there. Anyway, why they would choose to chop up such a great show into pieces and release a little here and there is beyond me. This show is obviously in extremely high demand. I don't know why they don't release the whole thing in one package. Deadheads would eat it up, and it could become among their best-selling shows.
I mean, they only released 12 songs (on 2 different deals) and left out 7 tunes...maybe we'll get the other 7 songs on a third release...doesn't really make too much sense to me.

the sound quality, musicianship and the recording of the overall atmosphere of the venue.
Special Mentions:
The Other One > Me and My Uncle (smokin')
Brokedown Palace (soft and beautiful)
St Stephen (of course)
Performances like this in the late 60s, early 70s is what really got me into the Dead.

Twenty years of this and here's the show that makes me crazy. I'm losing my grip with Jerry's jam in Hard to Handle, but the real gem for me is this Other One. It's spooky intense, with a booming intro from Phil and some unparalleled jamming from Garcia. I like the guy who says, on the verge of the spookiest part, "This song is what it is, man." No sh#$. If anyone knows of a better TOO, fill me in.

Great show; all said before (below). One of the most popular of the year (circulated widely as a bootleg album, tapes, etc.), along with 11-7-71.
Shmenny: right click each file of your choice and "save target" so that they download to your system. Then, use "media player" (or whatever default audio software package you have) to build a CD/burn it. Very simple. You can also add the entire folder (you create) to an ipod, etc.

This show does rock. A definite 5 star. Just imagine standing there when out of nowhere, they break into Mr. Charlie, and this biker guy is dancin around singin to a funky beat and catchy beat / guitar riff, then a little while later the whacko with the lead guitar, hair, and beard, taking you to the edge of the universe.
As teenagers, we had so damn much fun, I just can't imagine that the younger crowd at the "secret" Hollywood raves with a DJ playing techno-transBS these days have anywhere near the joy we experienced on Sunset Blvd. that Summer night back in '71. Or the many other nights and days of the Good Old Grateful Dead live!
Download it today, you won't be disappointed!

the hard to handle is the jam they say. for a possible quicker, punchier and tighter one, you may want to listen to 12/26/69. Pigpen misses the words, and even that is good, but it is a similar deal to this. Without the audience, which is the biggest problem for me here. I'm spoiled by the boards i guess.

Until about three years ago, I had never really been exposed to the Grateful Dead. Nor had I been exposed to the Archive. I read a squib about the Archive in Playboy, no less. I decided to check it out and noticed that there were quite a few Dead shows to say the least. Being a fan of blues and rock music my entire life, I figured this was a great way to discover a band that many people consider to be the greatest American band ever.
I don't remember how it was, but this was the first show I came across after performing a simple search for "Casey Jones" or something to that effect (Casey being the only Dead song I really knew at the time).
I scrolled down and read a review about this show that said something to the effect of "you can hear the crowed really take off into the stratosphere during Jerry's solo in 'Hard to Handle.'" I believe those words to remain true to this day. Thanks to this show I have discovered a band that will always have a place in my playlist, my conscience, and my heart. And after explore countless of hours of Dead shows since listening to this one, I can still say that this show is once of my favorites. The energy is great, and it will always have a special place in my heart. Thanks to the guy that taped this sucker in 71,and to the archive, for allowing us to enjoy it all these years later.

This is a really lovely, classic audience recording.
Just having one drummer leaves space for Phil Lesh to play those lovely bass lines. Jerry, Bob, Phil and Bill seem to complement each other perfectly.
I didn't care for the Keith and Donna years much. As good as 1979 to 1983 were, once again the clutter of two drummers just takes away the energy for me.
Hard to handle, Betha and Casey Jones are really nice (despite the person doing the woo woos !)

In building a rock memorabilia room, and trying to find a ticket to a particular GD concert I had attended at the Palladium way back when, I stumbled onto this site. When I realized someone had actually taped this show, you can imagine my excitement. I was actually a little afraid to listen to it (the dreaded flashback from the Orange Sunshine somebody -- probably with the GD-- passed around. It was so potent I still remember walking to the car and cops with billy clubs beating kids who were tripping out. I ended up at County General -- from the chemicals, not the cops).
I didn't even remember the NRPS playing that night, but it explains my fondness for them when nobody else i know has ever heard of them (and bless satellite radio for playing their best cuts).
As for the taping, it is truly a unique experience, probably due to the mikes being in the middle of a very enthusiastic audience and able to capture much of the dynamic feel (often catching a live clap track in surround sound).
I have many of the GD Dick's Picks and still haven't listened to anything like Jerry's extended solo at the end of Truckin'. It's too bad it cuts off short -- I'm not sure what happened -- but I think I have a program that will tidy it up a little.
Anyway, I haven't even listened to the whole thing yet but had to log in throw in my 2 cents. And best thing -- no flashbacks so far!!!

I agree, five stars aren't enough. I was 18, it was my second Dead show, the Hollywood Palladium an Art Deco palace. Once in the doors, we worked our way to maybe thirty feet from the stage, right center. Right in front of Jerry on pedal steel with NRPS. When the Dead came on, Pig was on our side, and from the first notes of Bertha you knew it was going to be one hell of a Lunar Eclipse. Every song is played with such energy and conviction, every note was just about perfect. I'm not sure if it was the Uncle Sam blotter but we were seeing everyone's aura that night. I remember my face hurting from grinning so much. I finally got my hands on a CD of this show about a year ago from a friend who was born on this day, what a gift. Hard to Handle is best played at top volume with the furniture moved out of the way. My only St. Stephen, but one of the best. Pigpen was in his best form, and Lovelight shines. This is of course, a legendary recording, as Deb Trist put it "It's like a you-were-there experience" (or something like that). Even with Casey's whistle tooter, the audience gives you the feeling of being back on the floor, or leaping in the air, once again. Thank you Rob Bertrando. Thank you Archive.org. And thank you Jerry.

I was listening to a stream of this show on Sugarmegs. At the song break between Bertha and playin' you can hear Bobby say something to (I presume) one of the tapers. "you're too close to the microphone. If you want a good recording, you'll need to move back about 40 ft. I wonder if he was talking to whomever made this recording. Just thought it was both ironic and kind of funny.

Jerry's guitar is very out of tune on each track up through Brokedown Palace- in fact you can hear him (thank goodness) tuning it at the beginning of that song. Me and Bobby mcGee has some very out of tune parts too. I think Bobby's guitar during that part. Other than and a rough spot or two, the majority of the rest of the show has what every Dead-phile looks for ENERGY!
Recording quality- just dynamite. For AUD sound board or whatever. Just fantastic. All in all a great show. I'm still looking for that quintissential show though. Anyone found it yet? I had it I think but my tape was stolen from my recorder during a party and never seen again. And I just can't remember what show it was. A dead tape stolen? I know - sacrilege.

Holy, Holy Smokes!! This show is unbelievable. Remember that page in the Offical Book of the Deadheads that says, "They didn't just pull the vista cruiser out for one song, they pulled it out for the whole damn night!" That pretty much sums up this show. Everything you've read here about this show and recording is accurate. It took 35 years for me to hear this music (I was 12 days old when it was played), but thanks to the archive I'm diggin' it loud and clear today. Forgive me it this has already been mentioned in previous reviews about this show, I haven't read all of them, but this nights Hard To Handle is the performance that is on the Fallout From the Phil Zone collection. It might even sound crisper than the recording that was officially released. Nice. Don't hesitate, just download it & I guarentee you'll be grinnin' soon.

If I could give six stars here I would, for this aural masterpiece surely deserves it. No matter what size your Dead collection, this is truly one of just 4 or 5 shows that you truly, absolutely, no foolin' CANNOT do without. Not only is it hands down the best pre-Mydland era audience recording ever made (and arguably the best of any era), it's one of the hottest, most unrelenting shows in GD history. Rob Bertrando deserves our eternal thanks for his brilliant work on this night.

I wish I had been there in person, but thankfully someone recorded this gem for all of us to enjoy.
I don't remember alot from the shows I did see, but I do remember one thing - so many people on ctutches - then when the show started - seeing micophones attatched to those cruthches being held in the air.
Thanks to everyone that made the effort to save these shows for the rest of us.

Not much else to say here that hasn't been said already. I agree with everybody that this is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest AUD recording ever. Five stars ain't enough, especially when you factor in the year and the performance.
Jerry's solo on Mr. Charlie is an absolute shredder!! This has become one of my favorite discs to listen to. Play it loud and you can truly imagine you were in the audience. I know people say that all the time about a show, but this is the one time nobody will disagree. You need this if you don't have it.

Another note added on 12/16/05:
Well, six months later and much has changed. I am glad that GDM changed their minds and let the Archive keep all the AUD's up and running, as well as allowing them to stream the SBD's (many of which can be found elsewhere for quick download, wink wink).
A comment on a review that mentioned the speed on this tape being "too fast". Well, I am sure if you picked up the "Houseboat Tapes" Dick's Picks, you realize how wrong you were. In fact, this AUD source is sooo good, I honestly cannot determine where the AUD stops and SBD starts (see liner notes in your DP CD).
The more I hear this show, the more I feel that this may be the BEST recording of a show ever. I know people throw that phrase around, but I have 1000's of hours on tape & CD, have been to my share of shows since 86 and have listened to pretty much everything out there, as I am a music junky. I am not making this statement lightly. The quality, range of pitch (from bass to cymbals), clarity, etc... + the performance = some of the finest art made by mankind.
I am giving this baby out for Christmas this year.
----------------------------
One more note added March 2006: regarding Hard to Handle, listen carefully folks. In many versions of this song, Bobby (yes, Bobby) takes the first lead, not Jerry. Just FYI.

This whole soundboard business really got me down for a while, and I really regretted taking the fact that the Dead's great music was free for granted. But, there are enough good AUDs out there that it doesn't matter too much right now. This is an amazing show the whole way through. Hard to Handle is an amazing example of Jerry at his best, and the crowd gets insanely pumped during his solo. Opening with an awesome Bertha and closing with an 11 minute Dew and 24 minute Lovelight, this show is great the whole way through. Short feedback trouble in Lovelight while Pigpen works his magic with the crowd, but a minor problem in comparison to the rest of the show.

This was like winning the lottery when it made it to my reel-to-reel collection in the 70's. Good shows were so hard to come by, and the higher quality full shows were all the rarer. Even then, I knew this was priceless and without exception the best Hard To Handle I'd ever heard. My view of this version never changed over the years and it was no surprise that Phil included it on Phil Zone. Anyway, this show summarizes a point in time that many will never understand unless they've paid their dues in the archives of the 60's and 70's - when Pigpen's influence had them at their hard core best. The 1st set is somewhat short, but you'll be hard pressed to find better versions of everything played, with the exception of the fuckhead I've wanted to strangle for 30 years 'woo-wooing' while he trashes Casey Jones. The 2nd Set Other One melds into a searing MAMU and back into Other One in a fashion lost through the bands softening over the years with a far more polished sound. The Deal rocks, the Sugar Magnolia rips and they clean house with the Morning Dew and Lovelight. Overall, it's my favorite show and typifies the raw energy displayed in many of the small venues that have given us some of the best music we've come to love. The Hard To Handle jam is Electric Jerry as good as it gets, and Pigpen's timing is right there...I too am surprised this is still available. It's a must have for any true Deadhead and the ultimate psychedelic doorway to anyone waiting for a bus to get on.

There is a reason this show has 80 + reviews. It is that good. Turn on Your Lovelight is awesome even with the couple of flaws. The vocals are really good which I have found to be rare for AUD's from this time period. When people say "The Dead were never the same without Pig " they are right on the head. Since we can only dowload aud's I will rate this as an aud and give it a five.

Subject: Best AUD... great sets
I thought I would start adding some reviews to some of these awesome shows. I may as well start here. This is my favorite Aud. The sound of music blends with the sound of the crowd in a good way, and there isnt any moments of really dominant shouts or voices, (I hate when some guy starts screaming out something like "hey play Casey Jones man"), not that there's anything wrong with the song, I just don't want to hear some guys plaintive crys for it throughout the entire set. This show has none of that... Its hard to believe this show was caught with an audience microphone. Whoever did it totally captured the show and did a really great job. And congrats for that. The classic Bertha is a great version with a fine tempo, Mr. Charlie is another one of my favorites from the first set, I just love that song, and its done real well here. Cumberland Blues, where a lot o poor man make a 5 dollar bill is fantastic as always and a few bong gurgles later, Bob sings a fantastic version of me and Bobby McGee. This is not a sterile soundboard, but its absolutely fantastic. I cant see how any Dead fan would be disappointed in this show. This is a must have. Pigpens magnificent version of hard to handle is done just the way its supposed to be, long before those Black Crowe punks prostituted it, and ruined it. Once and a while you will hear someone choking on some of that powerful pot that was everywhere in those days, but this is the best of the AUDs. You would be hard pressed to find a better audience recording of any show. This is the best AUD, in my opinion. for that, and the great set list, I give it 5 stars.

the band isn't the one trying to profit from shutting down all soundboards on this site, it's all the leetches working at GD Enterprises. Jerry always said once the music is out there it belongs to the people, but the men/women working at GDE think they're entitled to make a living off music they had nothing to do with. Jerry and Dick are both resting in peace, and those scavangers at GDE are making money off their inspiration

Really not much else to say that hasn't been said by the 65 other reviewers. May '77 Dead was what hooked me, but this show is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows. Certainly comes close to 4/29/71 as the best of the year. Jerry absolutely dominates this show. His leads drive the band on every song. He even busts out some riffs on the slower numbers like Brokedown and Loser. Obviously, the oft-mentioned Hard to Handle dominates the show, but don't let it over-shadow the rest. The band tears out with a hoppin' Bertha. Other 1st set highlights are Mr. Charlie and a funky bluegrass Cumberland. The second set jam is capped off by a ripping Morning Dew. And, of course, no show would be complete without a show-stopping Lovelight. This one's got it all. Amazing quality on this audio tape. Check it.

Subject: The two sets can each fit on their own CDs
Hi !
With all these fine reviews, there is little to add, except to point out that the track naming was done in a "safe" fashion, i.e. what would work on all CD burners and all CD-Rs.
However, these days, you should be able to fit the longer SET TWO all on one CD-R, if you use "overburning". Check your CD burners instructions to make sure that it is not a problem with your setup. Make sure that you remove the two-second gap between tracks when using Nero or whatever software you choose. Of course, be sure to use a 700MB, "80 minute" CD-R.
You will need to refer to the text file (a separate small download you can find on this page) to identify which tracks are SET ONE and which are SET TWO.
More than likely, this will work for you, and if not, you are only out a few pennies that CD-Rs cost these days. Give at try - it will allow you to listen to each set without interruption - just as originally played.

This entire show is amazing, so much energy. This used to be my favorite Hard to Handle, but after taking oceantree's advice and checking out the one from 3/24/71, im not so sure anymore. Check it out, it is mindblowing, pushed over the top by Bobby's melodic solo to open the doors... Man, I love 71.

You might call me the tail end dead head in that I got into the dead as a teenager and was only fortunate enough to see their last three years. That being said I subsist mainly on abridged memories and good bootlegs. Most of the lifer dead heads who were actuallly there in the early years confirm that the early 70's were the best years. This show is testimony to that statement.
All I really can say is that it is rare on any bootleg that I will WANT to listen to the enitre show start to finish. Usually the triggger happy finger will flip to the BEST part or song like flipping to the money shot in a porno. I have to say through and through this show is amazing to the last note. The highlight though is the Uncle tease in the midst of a completely abstruse Other one jam. It is apparent that Bobby and Jerry know exactly when the crescendo will hit and turn from the elusive Other one to the upbeat cowboy poem of Me and My Uncle.
To hear this go to Me and My Uncle and fast backward for about three seconds with those trigger happy fingers.

I can't believe this recording is out there on the net! What an awesome concert it was, as I had the privelege of being there. My drug days are long behind me, but great music is great music.
One of the reviewers wanted to know why it sounded like such an intimate setting; like a neighborhood bar. This was the strongest point of the Palladium. Basically just an open, semi-circular floor without seats. Funny, I even remember the concert was billed in the LA Times as the "Grateful Dead Dance".
Thank you, Lord, for allowing me to survive those days, and may you rest in peace, Jerry.

MUCH BETTER WITH AUD, although I'd love to hear the whole show in SBD. Anyway, forget Barton Hall, forget Red Rocks, forget the Fillmore......for now and GET THIS SHOW!!!!! YOU WILL NOT BE LET DOWN!

Hey ... I wish you had recorded everything! You set the standard for aud. taping back before we all had D5's and good mics. I have loved this audience recording for almost 30yrs. What a feat! You got it and I love you for it. This captures the boys in a cosmic-western fury that is hard to beat...Such energy. To those that hate the hwo-hwo guy hey I can,t blame him. If I had been there I would have been "hoootin" too! Freak...on. 7/4/05 addendum I don't buy the half step too fast either... now; for the meat of the matter-SHAME ON THE SURVIVING MEMBERS OF THE BAND for their policy regarding existing recordings. If they take this aud(or any other show) off the archive we need to start the revolution the next morning. What a betrayal of the people that stuck with them through thick and thin for so many decades. Should we all burn our tapes of anything that's been commercially released? What was the point of the open taping policy for so many years if it is now conditional upon commercial releases that most of us won't buy and can't afford...Not to mention the fact that we don't want incomplete shows (whenever possible). Now they've got my Irish up.This is not a bunch of assholes crashing the gate, this is the band's strongest and most loyal supporters who are being hurt. People who expended huge amounts of time, energy and money taping ,trading and following the band. I'm appalled and saddened by this policy. Don't even get me going on the JGB stuff. Is anyone in San Rafael listening or sympathetic?

Oh man- this is where it all starts to begin...from here on out Fall 71, Euro 72, 73...Mmmmm. This is where it all begins! Such a shakey year and to have a show so solidified as this. Its only acceptable to have an aud. of this night to share in the same excitement as the crowd.
Nothing can be added to what has been said so far...grab this one, warts and all, and CRANK IT!!!
Sound is actually pretty good considering how old it is and the band is on fire this night!!! Oh, what the hell, (its the 4th after all) Five stars!

I cannot believe this show on several levels--sound quality is unbelieveable considering what equipment was available at this time. The taper also captured the acoustics of this wonderful hall. The band is on fire on this set. It is also fun getting this great of a recording while capturing the excitement of the audience.

What an incredible audience recording - and from 34 years ago! It will be interesting to compare this to DP 35. I must say that I do not think this tape is sped up as a previous reviewer stated - I just don't hear it(no offense). Then again I'm no sound engineer either. Anyway, this show rocks... During Cumberland, Phil just starts going crazy and if you listen closely, he is almost playing the bass line to Caution at one point! SO worth the download, but do it soon. Once DP 35 is released, this will probably be taken down...

This show is amazing, the energy and speed just makes you want to drop everything you're doing and sing along, a definite must have. Though 24/192 can't be right on the speed being half step fast that would make Playing in the Band way too slow to start with, all in all one of the best aud recordings ever.

Very little to add that hasn't already been covered. Listening thru head phones with eyes closed it really was as if I were there. My question is where is there? I don't know the size of the venue (fairly small, I'm sure), but this made me feel like I was seeing my favorite band at a local bar or tavern. This just sounds so intimate. It sounds like every one is having a great time. Wish I actually had been there.

This audience recording is amazing, but I wish it were at real speed. It's more than a half step fast (if memory serves), so there are over 12,000 copies floating around like that -- that's one reason the energy seems so amazing folks. Now that a soundboard of at least part of this show is going to be released (just discovered by Donna Jean) hopefully we'll get to hear at least part of 8/6/71 in proper pitch. Of course, it also means this source may go away...

An audience source, but still excellent. All the shows from this run at the Hollywood Palladium are worth having, however, if you can only get one, then this is it. This is my favorite version of Hard to Handle- it's the version from The Phil Zone. The jam in the middle was flirted with quite often in this era, but this version fulfilled all expectations. I have few regrets about the Dead, but one is not seeing Pig in his prime, and this show has it. Then, there's jam in the middle. The minor key chord progression makes this swing all the harder. Cool western-outlaw flavor. Untouchable intensity. Givin' this set a five.

This show changed all that, big time. An utterly incendiary performance that seemd to channel all the forces in the universe simultaneously. It was at once ecstatic, sinister, joyful, dark, and simply bursting with a sense of possibility and freedom. It had a profound trasformational effect on me personally, and was perhaps the catalyst that enabled me to break free from the strictures of my straight-laced Mormon upbringing and to pursue *MY* notions of a self-actualized life....
I digress. Yes, the "Hard to Handle" may be the best ever, but the whole second set was just unfuckingbelieveable. I've lost the reel-to-reel I played to death through the '70s, so this download is a godsend. THANKS!

Yes this it the Fallout from the Phil Zone Hard To Handle and I actually prefer the sound quality of this source to that release. This one is a little brighter. What a climax. It's up there with the jam at the end of the Playin' from 5/26/72 as one of my favorite Dead peaks of all time.
Listen carefully for Bobby's short Weather Report tease when they go back into the Other One after Uncle.
My only knock of this show is the "woo woo" guy who won't stop wooing all through the show, especially during Casey Jones where he woo woos at the end of every single line Jerry sings. It's stuff like that that makes me prefer soundboards. I'm all for enthusiasm, just not too close to the taper's mics.

If i'm not mistaken, this show has the legendary Hard To Handle that appears on Fallout.....my Deadhead's Taper Compendium claims that Jerry fell to his knees during the peak of the jam...FAR OUT or what??

I can really feel the energy coming from this show right from the start. I dont give out 5's for just anything, but this one is definitly something special, right from the start with a great version of Bertha. The Hard to Handle is unbelievable. Its hard to understand how a taping from 30+ years ago can sound so good. Download this now.

I remember it like it was yesterday! Because I have had the tapes since one week after the show. I was standing right beside the source. After this show I had to try for a copy. He gave me a phone number which I called three days later, and three days after that and $13.00 later I had two reels of this show which should be in everybody's top three. It was over 100 in LA that day and at least that inside the Palladium. After St. Stephen, Jerry Bob and Phil all walked to their mikes and said something of which nothing is legible. Perfect chemistry that night. Definitely the best I ever saw! ENJOY!!!

Subject: Best AUD tape ever?!?!?!?!?!?!
Subject: Best AUD tape ever?!?!?!?!?!?!
This recording is one of the best AUD tapes ever recorded, IMO. I've heard AUD tapes of DMB shows, and those can't touch this one! In 84, the Dead created a taper's section but Deadheads still couldn't hope to get such a good sound as this, even 13 years later. This could be released as a DP and would have acceptable quality for that type of release.
Anyway, the performance also is excellent. 1st set decent, but just a warm-up for the 2nd. The Truckin>Drums>Other One>M&MU>Other One is transportative as hell and must have been a blast to see in person...but the recording is so good that if you put it on a good stereo system and cranked it, it would be just like being there. Get it at all costs.

This is my all-time favourite audience recording, and one of my absolute Dead-favourites. The band is on fire, storming through two sets of classics with incredible energy. Just listen to the transition from The Other One into Me & My Uncle, just magic. The sound is fantastic, you wouldn't believe this is an audience recording from 1971! This is an essential piece of rock'n'roll, download highly recommended. If I had to give away all my Dead stuff but one show this is the one I'd keep.
Also check out the New Riders set from the same date, which is also available in the Archive, pretty hot either.

I don't usually bother with audience shows, but my God what a show this is. What a crime that no SBD exists? But this tape is SO good, you don't care. What kind of taping equipment did this guy have in 1971? This sounds better than most AUD 1980's shows I've heard!! A fairly short show, but good things come in small packages. Every song is played with high energy and conviction. The Hard to Handle is legendary, the Cumberland is bluegrass on acid, and the Brokedown is stellar. But the St. Stephen, Truckin>Other One jam is just unbelieveable. And the Morning Dew and Lovelight are icing on the cake. A jam packed little show that will change your opinion of AUD tapes. A must have for 1971. I hesitate to give 5 stars to an AUD show, but read what Mr. Latvala says about this show in Deadbase.Helpful hint-adjust your EQ on your stereo a little, boost the bass, light a bowl of Cheerios and you'll enjoy this just as much as any SBD show from 1971!

one of the absolute 'must-haves'. this recording defined what an audience recording should be in my mind for many many years...its still amazing that Bertrando got that much of a sweetspot sound out of 1971 equipment. the audience sound is an absolute bonus to this recording instead of a detriment.
and i really can't say anything about this show without mentioning the absolute monster of a "Hard to Handle"...from the opening notes accompanied by the audience stomping out the beat with Billy, to Pig setting Jerry loose with a request to 'play yo' guitar'...to some of the absolute sweetest riffs i've ever heard make their way into this tune, this is the Gratefuld Dead sonic beasty snorting fire and brimstone at its very level best

This The Other One suite is the best my ears have heard save a few from '72. The music in this segment boils with psychadelic energy. The Dead lived in nearby Watts during their early years of woodshedding and loved lighting up the L.A. sky with their explosive brand of musical shamanism.

Rob Bertrando is one of the legendary, pioneering tapers, and you'll hear why if you listen to this. This is a smoking hot show from 1971, which was a tumultuous year without a real set touring schedule. They played this show (along with the night before) at the Palladium and just blew the roof off. Pig is great on this one, sad to think of what happened so soon afterwards. And listen for the "Weather Report Suite" tease late during the Space Jam after "The Other One." A very hot show, a very hot AUD, a very unique snapshot of Grateful Dead history. A must have recording. Essential.
