Seemed as if the band was little tired tonight, solid, but nothing to write home about.

Eyes
This show has a beautiful and unique Eyes of the World. I especially love the post-verse segment that dissolves into drums. Of this 4-night Paramount run, the first two shows are a bit weaker, but still very much worth a listen or two.

missing songs
According to the Compendium review some copies have an incomplete version of "Jack Straw" but the remaining songs from the beginning of the shows were not recorded (or perhaps on a reel now lost).

Wharf Rat almost blown
As a super fan of Wharf Rat, this has to be the one so far in my chronological journey from 1970 that has come the absolute closest to being completely F'd up. The opening lines are no problem, but from the transition into the break section, or church section, whatever you wanna call it, the timing was so off and it just never seems to recover for the remainder of the song. It sounded like if this had been a 1970's show, they would've just stopped and re-started. It's not until after the first verse after the break do they get the timing back, when the drums have to enter an almost march-type of beat to get everyone back on the same page. Interesting version, is all. God I love the Dead.

Pretty sweet
Below average? JEEZ! Come on! 1977 Grateful Dead is like pizza & sex! Even when it's 'below average', it's still GREAT!
The Music Never Stopped is smokin'...Jerry on fire - almost as hot as the 5/7/77 version (the best, IMO).
Getting ready to listen to Set II. Thank you for the info - return of Wolf, eh? COOL!

What Lies In the Eyes Is No Surprise...it's good!
It's a pretty Eyes, although the drummers just loudly plod away in the verses/choruses with no embellishment. The jam sections are looser and more fun, of course. It sounds like Bob, Phil, and Keith are perfectly content to let Eyes dissolve to Drums about 5 seconds after the last chorus, but it's as if Jer is saying: "No way. Let's jam some more. This is Eyes, dammit! Keep playing, wankers!" or something like that, lol...
Great sound quality except for the aforementioned loud drums, btw.

I need this show to have all of 1977...if you have it, please contact me!
I had this show and loaned to someone who never returned it. I have all 64 of the other 1977 shows, but I need this one show to complete the year. (OK, Albuquerque is just the end of Set II, but that's all that circulates...) If you've got it, in either audience or soundboard, I'll trade you two shows for this one. My list is at
db.etree.org/tucsondeadhead. Check out my list and e-mail me at tucsondeadhead@
yahoo.com, PLEASE. This isn't a classic show by any means. It's a so-so 1977 show, but it's the only one I'm missing... Peace, Jac in Tucson

Below average
This show isn't up to par with most '77 shows. Part of the problem is that the drums are too loud on this recording, but Bill and Micky are also kind of sloppy here. And the band seems a little tired or something. Not a bad show, vocals are good, but not inspired, either.

Return of Wolf
good show, good sound...typical '77 for the most part (which is saying something!)....a couple things to note, this recording is missing the first 5 songs obviously but this was also the "Return of Wolf" show...both the guitar and the song.

first show
Great show in the old Paramount Theater, my first of many. The show was loud, intimate, with quality sound, back in the days when Jerry was wearing his dark sunglasses rapidly picking his way through the scales while Wier was jumping all over the stage strumming away, and Lesh was plunking away on the bass where every beat was felt reverberating against your sternum, all against the driving background rythyms of Bill and Micky, with Keith on keyboards. Second half was particularly inspired and a lot of fun. The quality of the recording is very good and worth the listening.
