Loose as can be.
One of the many nice things about 1994 is the size of the repertoire. They had decades of material to choose from any given night, resulting in miscellaneous assortments like this one. You’ve got Cold Rain and Snow, an ancient song covered on their first album, opening a set that also includes Dire Wolf and Don’t Ease Me In, which popularized in their 1970 acoustic sets, along with a blues cover, a Dylan cover, and Stagger Lee. The show has 2 Ace songs, 2 Built to Last songs, and 2 American Beauty songs. Mars Hotel AND Revolver. Stones AND Samba. A true Grateful Dead sampler.
The performance itself is as loose and mushy as you’d expect from a 90’s Shoreline summer gig. Much of the first set is made up of slower songs, which gives Kreutzmann a bit of cabin fever - he really gets things cracking during Bertha, which is slotted in an interesting spot. After a 9-song first set, it’s a half dozen songs pre-drums! Foolish Heart is good and jammy. I Want to Tell You is an exciting debut, but it needed some more rehearsal. Ship of Fools is excellent, they put a good spin on Playin’, and Attics is very sweet. The Garcia songs are the highlight of this show - no major fumbles other than the new Beatles cover. This is a loose, laid back Shoreline run opener. It made for some nice background music during my drive home through the Catskills on NY Route 17 after attending a couple nights of Bob this past weekend. On paper, the next night looks more daring and exciting, but this one is a very pleasant option if you’re just looking for a chill Welnick-era Cali show to spin.

I am on an amazing journey
I am listening to every 1994 show in order, mining for gold.
Set 1 Highlights: Queen Jane is quite nice. All songs played well. EPIC Black-Throated Wind, but it still doesn't quite top 1994-03-25. High-energy Picasso Moon. Vince is on tonight.
Set 2 HIGHlights: Foolish Heart hits hard. I Want to Tell You is one of my favorite Dead covers (there are better performances from other dates). Ship of Foooools. I'd still put Samba in the Rain up against a Brent tune :D
PEAK Last Time. Attics is great, and that was a particularly cool Drums>Space.
This would have been a fun one to attend. Onto the next show.

Screw the 70's, Corrina & Samba?????

You know this guy is an idiot with comments like that!!! The only songs worse than Corrina & Samba were some of the Brent & Donna songs. I loved Brent, just not his songs. The way this guy thinks 1970, 71 & '72-->'74 weren't as good as when Brent was there> You have to be kidding. where do these idiots come from???
The rating (the lowest) is for Krestonc!!

90's reviews
'just one thing i know for sure, what i go to say...' > 'such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there'!!!
wasn't that the point? being there? I was there, and loved every minute. sure some times were better than others, but come on. i hated 'last time' as much as anyone, but i would give anything to hear jerry play it one more time.
and as far as jerry fuckin' up... who's to say the entire existence of the dead wasn't just some giant cosmic fuck up.
and screw the 70's. the 'brent years' are my favorite.
and i stil love corinna, and samba. and after jerry died, it wasn't mama that tried. it was missing man formation doing their best. i get the differences between eras, but they were blowing minds all the way to the end. so to you haters... 'you know better, but i know him'

good show
This follows probably the best show of 94, that being vegas third night. There were 4 nights off and we all know how loose these home town shoreline shows can get. I'm sure everyone was partying, not just Jerry. Somehow he gets the blame for the downfall but we all know the direction that vince and bob were taking the band. With exception of his cover of Beatles All too Much, all vinces songs, harmonies, solo's and back-up vocals were horrible. That is why I liked Healy,s mix that would sometimes render him inaudibe and low in the mix. Cutler made it more equal sounding vocals overall with more noticible drums throughout. As far as the comment about The Dead not being able to play the more difficult songs in the later days, the brief stay of Hornsby to help Vince settle in were fall 90 thru Halloween 91. That leaves 4 years and most people who have commented about Garcia's heroin use began again out east, fall 93 and continued till the end. Supposedly he was actually clean and in rehab when he passed. Whatever to all of it. As far as I'm concerned they were all partying and there was a resurgance of mainstream popularity. Most people could do without all the new songs weir and Welnick were playing nightly. The whole scene took on a played out, sold out vibe at times. Everyone knew that on even the best night we would still have to weather a lame vince tune or an easy answers or corinna, etc. If I were Jerry, with all of his genius, and artistic creativity goodness flowing, subject to watching the scene, and his lifes work go in such a negative direction, I would have used smack too, maybe. I'm ust saying most dope addicts are depressed, or going through tough times. I,m not making excuses for him, it's just, he couldn't quit the band or stop touring for various reasons. I'll say that he gave it his best, considering what the world was giving him. They all dabbled in whatever so who cares? The show and the west oast summer tour 94 was awesome. Most of the second set tapes I have from that tour don't even fit on a 10 min tape! without encore! Lots of psychadelic sounds and jamming.
Playing in the band into drums was very good, with hints of china doll near the end, and the attis is very nice.

Shining nuggets in a fools gold mine
One of the stranger shows I've been to, but not without a gem or two. The boys looked straight up loaded, the versions weren't the greatest, but Stagger Lee & Black Throated were welcome tunes.I even predicted both songs...just had that feel. One guy next to me kept telling me I was some sort of alien super genius... I just laughed. I want to tell you was stellar, and I don't really care for anything Beatles. Quickest i've ever seen the lights come on after a show...one second Sugar Mag, the next..POOF!!

As far as the comment on no encores played since 5/3/86 (a most smokin' show, itself) there was no encore on the second night of the Memorial Day weekend run in 1992 at Shoreline. I was there and I was bummed....

Faded is the crimson
I think part of the problem is the overall sound/mix. Jerry/Bobby/Vince are each mixed clean, and yet somehow it sounds like they're playing at opposite corners of an airplane hangar. Bobby's also got too much reverb, contributing to the effect.
When Jerry was on the stuff in the later days, the Dead often couldn't hack difficult songs. They always mangled Hornsby's Stander, they quit the popular Ruben & Cherise revival after 4 plays, and saddest of all, they often stumbled through their own songs - songs they'd been playing for 25 years.
"I want to tell you" - at this stage, they had no business attempting George Harrison tunes. Jerry's solo here is a microcosm of his struggles and inability in these sad last days. To call this take "good" is a sad reflection of what passed for "good" after '93.

I want to tell you
July 1st, 1994, was a sunny summer day spent lazily by the bay. A friend and I took the day off work and proceeded to spend the day (and most of our weekend, for that matter) sitting or strolling in the Shoreline parking lots for hours before each of the three shows. I can't even begin to remember how many kind folks we met that weekend. This was the last year the Shoreline center parking lot was open (the center lot was the one immediately outside the venue and thus the most happening scene) and the scene was wonderful.
A nine-song first set made us think that the band had really come to play. Foolish Heart was played for the first time since Sept. '93. Its pairing with I Want to Tell You was totally unexpected and got everyone excited. This is a clear, crispy soundboard recording, and I'd have given it 5 stars if the show was hotter overall, but I think the Saturday (7/2/94) show is the best of the three nights. FYI the 7/1 show had no encore played (the first time that happened since 5/3/86, I believe) due to the band reaching the venue's curfew cut-off.
