I was at this show 14 years ago tonight. Thanks for the memories everybody. I have a lot of personal stories about this show but I will leave them for another time and stick to the music.
Shakedown is off the charts, over 15 minutes of the funkiest jamming this side of P-funk. I felt like I had 10,000 volts running through my body and couldn't help but dance like a madman. Nice blusey Wang Dang followed by a tasty Lazy River. Extended version of Mexicali for the Soul-Cal crowd. While Jerry flubs a couple lyrics and hits a couple of sour notes, it doesnt diminish the power of this beautiful Row Jimmy, a very dreamy version. Wow! Promised Land is smokin' hot, played for the promised land crowd. Hot first set.
A stellar Foolish Heart opens the second set, with the jam reaching some breathtaking hights. The show starts going downhill after this with an average Way to Go(werent they all), then a shoddy Corrina into a sloppy Uncle Johns Band where Jerry sits out the solo. Due to equipment problems Bobby plays his acoustic during space, adding some nice textures and a different feel. Last Time rocks hard out of space bringing a rowdy crowd back into the aisles, much to the chagrin of the overzealous security. While this Dew isn't among the best I saw, it still hits some very high notes, and the furious jam ends w/ Phil bombs "I guess it doesn't matter anywaaaaaaay". Thank you Jerry, this was my last Dew. In response to the previous reviewer, Jerry does hit some clams to be sure, but it's not Vinces fault. Take a listen to 6-15-93 for a prime example with Vince at the keys, I'll take 6-15-93 Dew over any version w/ Brent.
Liberty was a disapointment in the encore position, as usuall. I guess if they closed every show w/ Brokedown it would get boring.
Sound quality is three stars, too much Vince, there are a couple points where Vinces vocal cause me to wince, not his fault, he's just too damn high in the mix. Show is three stars, mostly for Shakedown and Foolish Heart. So three stars it is.

The west lot of the SA was pumpin with the jingle vibe & 4-5 aisles of holiday shoppers filled a very happenin Shakedown Street. It was a purrfect opener! My newbie friend Tedro sure enjoyed the scene & probably had a little too much too fast cuz when he got in and the first tune never stopped, he bailed back to the lot... We found him inside my ragtop jeep with all four seatbelts somehow plugged in & holding him up! The band was cookin & courageously workin in weaker new material. Jerry was nailin & it as much as he was blowin it & we all had a real good time! decent audience recording - thanx!

I know why Vince's band is called "missing man formation" - his keyboard playing has been MIA for years. Listen to the clunky Morning dew and go back and hear a late 80's version or even one with Hornsby's energy and see how this tune suffers with Vince.
Note, jerry also hits so many "Clams" on this version he could open a seafood restaurant.
Shakedown is very good and the first set is about average. Foolish goes up and down and way To go home is no differnet than the other 400 times they played it. the Corrina> UJB is uneven. Not the worst by any means, but disappointing.

This was my 1st trip to cali & only my 4th dead show. Besides a couple of shows in the midwest during the summer i hadn't seen very much of the band, but this was a great show. The energy was electric!! There was a buzz about B. Marsalis possibly setting in & tickets were in high demand. I remember being offered twice the amount i had paid for my ticket & wanting nothing to do with it. I had come to see the dead a nothing else would do.
Jerry got things rolling with a great shakedown that just kept going to higher & higher hightest. Seemingly putting everyone on notice that they had come to play & not just for the ride! Wang Dang kept the party feeling going. Lazy River Road slowed things down a bit but Bobby picked things up with a hot me & my uncle > mexicali combo that took us all south of the boarder. Jerry then delighted the crowed with a solid Row Jimmy. Although there were a few lyrical bobbles Jerry did nail severl lines with a little extra gusto. Promised Land was hot and left everyone wanting more!
The second set was highlighted by a moving Foolish Heart, comical UJB & a spirited Last Time. Morning Dew brought the house down but I felt like the band had so much more in store for us that night. I guess that they were saving it for the next night. I'm just glad i had tickets to both shows.
As far as the sound quality goes for this show, i'm left wondering where are the SBDs?
