I love '83 Dead and I don't care what you say!
This was one of my first tapes. I got turned on to the Dead in about '84 when I was 14. Didn't see my first shows until the summer of '87. Anyway, I always
...
loved this tape/show. The Shakedown opener is loose and funky. As is the Wang Dang Doodle. Candyman is energetic and focused. Jerry is playing well. He nails the intro, nails the outro and sings well, too. Birdsong is one of my favorites of all time. Bobby puts on a clinic in his one of a kind "oddball chord inversions and whammy bar" style. Meanwhile Brent is comping the main riffs, laying down mellow groovy jazzy accompaniment while Jerry uses all of this as means to lay back and stretch out. It's not long before it gets pretty heated on all fronts. In the second set we're treated to a stellar China>Rider with a great classic transition followed by a funky Women are Smarter. Bobby calls it a "Saturday Night song." Terrapin is another highlight and finds Jer in fine voice. .I swear every time I listen to this version I find myself singing along at the top of my lungs nearly in tears. Moving on ... Bobby hangs out with the drummers and jams (for quite a bit, actually), throwing down more kooky chord sequences and angular ideas as they head into drums. Super cool. Next it's Drums/space and then a pretty Wheel. All in all a great show and they even play a Revolution encore. Checkitout!

Fighting on stage
This was one of the 2 or 3 worst shows (out of 200+) I have ever seen. Funny, it's not so bad listening now, but being there, wow. Phil wanted to play
...
St Stephen, and when Bobby started throwing stones phil walked threw up his hands and walked off stage. He came back on, shut off his amp, and stormed off again. To say the rest of the band was befuddled is an understatement. How do we play without our bass player? He eventually came back to finish the show, but refused to join in at the microphone during Revolution despite Bobby offering him half of his mike. I took friends to this one as their first show. Afterwards, they said to me "you've seen those guys how many times? That was pretty lousy" I couldn't disagree.

refugees into it, including my lil bro. Hauled ass to Syracuse just in time for Shakedown St. I had NO idea how good this show was until about 1987. And floor seats, no less.

Dome sound issues
Unfortunately, the Carrier Dome is not the optimal place to have a concert. Especially when the band is the GD. The acoustics are fair at best. There is
...
a lack of musical intimacy. Having said that this was a good show. I recommend it. Great "Shakedown" and interesting (looking back) placement/performance of "Bucket" in its early stages. Post drums is ->->continuous - really nice "Wheel"; "Throwing Stones" definitely had a more apocalyptic feel in this year. The "Not Fade" is not like 9/3/77 but it is an interesting banter back and forth btw Weir and Mydland. "Saturday Night" is seamless and leaves the audience barely able to catch its collective breath. "Revolution" was okay. I think the boys could have worked on the harmonies more, but I think it was a better Beatle cover than "Day Tripper".

Fans of '83 will like this one. Be advised that it was mastered WAY too hot, with occasional clipping. There is also some tape hiss evident, which probably
...
stands out more due to the excessive levels. I did a 3 db volume cut and applied light hiss reduction with Cool Edit, which seemed to help.
