I was at this show, Saturday night.the statement "For unknown reasons, Pigpen does not sing on any song during the show, although he does play keyboard." is not true. pigpen did a solo set, a few songs.

My partner and I have sat listening to this trying to determine if, perhaps, Jerry was actually singing this? We have differing opinions. Can anyone who was alive and present (jealous) settle this for us?

The sound on 7/14/1970 is much better and it is clearly Bobby, but this recording quality leaves a little mystery for our ears, despite multiple listens. The line “out where the horses were tied” on 7/11 has Bobby and Jerry clearly in chorus, but 7/14 has Bobby solo for this line.

This was my 2nd concert--I saw them do an hour in front of Hendrix a couple of months before--but this was the Big Bang for this Deadhead. I think I can solve the simmering argument about dates and set lists and such. I attended the "January 11" show. It went from midnight until dawn, January 12. Likewise Friday the 10th and Sunday the 12th. So I guess you can argue semantics but goddammit I saw the greatest concert of my life July 11 and the electric set began with a thundering Dew and ended with a shrieking Viola followed by a gentle UJB. I'm 70 and I haven't come down yet.

So I've been listening to every single concert in the archive in chronological order. I started doing this in August 2020 and I only listen when I'm walking. I'm wondering if this is the first live recording of Jerry using a Wahwah pedal. It's only for a few minutes and it's tentative sounding but you can hear it during not fade away at the beginning of it. I'm not a 100% sure that it's actually a Wahwah pedal I definitely don't know how to spell it hahaha but I do think it's the first time that I have heard any petal use or whatever is used to create that sound so I'm pretty sure that it's showing up now for the first time. It also corresponds with the emergence of the earliest versions of sugar magnolia. We know that Garcia was using that sound effect and recorded some great versions of it in the studio with that Wahwah pedal. Besides that point, I really do like the three gospel songs that close out the acoustic set together. It's really great to hear all three of them in proximity with each other creating a better than church- like moment, seems like the band liked it also as they repeated it the next night on the 12th. Also notable is the one time only everly Brothers song so sad. Hard to hear it times but improves as it moves on, so sad they only played this once

If you know what's good you'll LOVE this incredibly high energy show, with acoustic and electric Dead and New Riders, meaning a ton of Jerry, and how can that ever be bad! One of the best Morning Dews, and I've heard them since the beginning and witnessed some incredible Dews especially 6/14/85. The other thing that stands out about this recording is that it's a real audience with plenty of unwanted but then again appropriate audience noise. You can actually hear people tripping! Enjoy this amazing show!

The Dead play great on this night, and luckily we at least got a decent audience recording of it. Unlike much of 1970 that's not even available, so I can't really complain about the quality and as long as the Dead is on it's gotta be good. A nice one time performance of So Sad, and a good first performance of Rosa Lee, always gotta love the Acoustic Dead.

Beware!

The music of the first 9 songs only comes out of the left channel. All you hear out of the right channel is tape hiss, until the acoustic GRATEFUL DEAD perform "A Voice From On High".

The "taper" was kind enough to be quite during most of the show; thank you, but there are a few tiny moments here and there where the silence is broken.

I'd say for an audience recording from 1970 (the stone age of recording) it's no too bad...ah, um....hmm.

I mean if you're into the DEAD you've got plenty of LOVE to make up for the less than perfect audio quality, b'cause you know the reward is a super cool, smooth, groovin' GRATEFUL DEAD concert at the Fillmore East. And face it, you ain't never gonna see or hear the DEAD at the Fillmore East ever again, unless it's a recording, and you might as well listen to this recording because it takes you back to 1970, at the Fillmore East and you're out in the audience with the NYC crowd...yee ha!

I'd like to say thanks to the taper. His heart & soul was/is in the right place.

The taper captured an ultra-rare GRATEFUL DEAD moment....the live acoustic performance of "So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad) by the Everly Brothers.

You can hear how the Everly Brothers influenced the BEATLES, and how the GRATEFUL DEAD's taste in music is/was exceptional.

I recommend turning the right channel off completely for the first 9 songs and you use your EQ during playback for the entire show.

Windows Media Player has a 10 band EQ and SRS WOW effects that enhance the sound.

It would be nice to have a clean soundboard of this show...Garcia plays pedal steel with the NEW RIDERS of the PURPLE SAGE and it's a great performance.

One of the best live performances of the NRPS I've heard. They ain't foolin' around, they are well rehearsed and are performing as if they were in the studio. The NRPS were way ahead of their time by at least a quarter century or more.

When the electric GRATEFUL DEAD appear on stage the NYC crowd gets wild and crazy.

I give this show 5 stars for performance and transfer.

For Audience recordings it's a 4, because of it's historical value. So I gave it 3 stars and call it a "MUST HAVE" show.

Zias, below, is absolutely correct. 7/11 and 7/12 have plainly gotten switched everywhere, which even Kenny Schachat the source of the original 7/12 tape, the one with Viola, acknowledges could have happened. I was unequivocally there on 7/11, and the opener was, memorably, Easy Wind. The dates, of course, are of secondary interest, but if all this energy is being put into archiving, respect should be paid to first-hand accounts. By the way, just prior to the Night of the Living Dead sequence, was that master comedian, Richard Nixon, delivering his Checkers Speech. Sure the quality is crude, but so much better to capture the raw crowd fear of this monstrous Viola, a far cry from the Santa Claus and his cute dancing bears of recent popular imagery.

My first show, GD at Midnight at the Fillmore East. Pigpen had laryngitis, so he plays, but does not sing. Deli at 7:30 AM next door. Whichever date it was doesn't matter

I don't mean to be obnoxious, but this is the show from 7/12/70, not 7/11/70, having attended both. Of course mislabeling of earlier shows was rife when chronicling the Band's performances was a new thing, but at this point I felt a need to bring this up.

The Electric set of 7/11 opened with Easy Wind, and featured a medley of Dancing-Cryptical-Other One-Cryptical-Lovelight.

The quality is better than anything I ever recorded Live. Thanks for sharing it. This date seems to be mired in disagreement about the setlist. I've been checking several sites and believe it is correct.

Great setlist, but unfortunatley the tape is not up to par with what we are getting spoiled with on this
site. still worth a listen, just imagine i'ts a multi-generation cassetee bootleg.
