Subject: Not bad
Subject: Not bad
The AUD recording is fairly standard -- a bit too much audience noise, but it is not objectionable. Arenas are harder than theaters for good field recording.
Brent is still feeling his way around the repertoire but it is undeniable that he is an energizing focus for the rest. Their sound is tighter, more cohesive, and when they want to kick into overdrive, there is more turbo boost from Brent than what was able to be delivered from Keith.
The shows from this tour have their moments, (what is with the drummers doing their disco drumming during Mexicali? Stop that, boys!) but on the whole these are average shows. They take it up a step by the fall tour.

This show was nice, especially the second set. Estimated>Eyes(Jam) was the highlight of the show for me. Thanks for the great recording Barry G!

Folks I must apologize to you all, and Bob especially.I attended this concert, my first and only Dead show, and now I believe I was the person who threw the shirt on Mr.Weir as he played during this evening's encore. What can I say, I was wrong,
please forgive me.Honestly I didn't realize I had
acted so badly until i searched for this recording and read the first hand reports.
Please forgive me folks, and you too Bob.

Subject: Stella !
Subject: Stella !
Can't say too much for quality of recording but...
Absolutely one the most dramatic moments I saw the band pull off was when they took this wildly insane crowd all the way down from the frenzy of Truckin to absolute silence during Stella Blue.
Also remember a little piece of paper with a tiger on it.
This music and recording a 4. The concert experience was off the charts.
This was the kind of show that made me come back for years even when the music wasn't all it once was. Wild Wild night inside ! that let out into a perfectly timed torrential downpour. So much for the Carnival that was across the parking lot. (A real carnival with Ferris wheels and stuff. I swear) We drove around that part of Virginia for hours that night, in the rain and every once in a while we would pass the colisseum going in a different direction. Took til noon the next day to get to Baltimore.
It absolutely exemplified the saying "There is nothing like a grateful dead concert" If we have to explain - you just wouldn't understand.

Holy Cow. That jam in Eyes alone is the kind of jam that made a whole show worthwhile. Amazing stuff from the masters. And by the way, if Glassberg taped it, it'll sound as good as it did live. Thank you, Barry G.

This was the first Hampton, pouring rain and da boys arriving late did not hamper the vibe. The locals were getting their first dose of the deadhead world and they welcomed us(and our $) with open arms. The scene outside was a reunion of sorts with Southern and Northeast heads meeting up with the diehard westcoasters. Yellow school buses with VW Buses mounted on top of them, stir fry, bracelets, bartering and smiles were the theme for the next 13 yrs. This copy here is a welcome one since I had and Aud copy that was rather hissy. I remember having one of the light bulb coming on moments during Stella when my misunderstandings of the band melted into beleif that there were in our hearts and minds.what other band achieved that?

1st set: We Must make sure everything soudns just exactly perfect...Ahhhh, there we are...Though Jerry sounds a tad weak on "Mississippi" the band is projecting at full strength. Ahhh..from 8:45 to 9:30 is total rock-star hand-pointing for Mr. Garcia. Lots of incomplete musical spaces on "Franklin's" despite full-bodied background voices. Brent will soon learn though that he burdens the responsibility for filling in some of these holes. Also, his keyboards are an annoying distorted tinnying sound that's grating my aural senses. "Mama" pleases the peeps, "Mexicali" gets the roar of approval, even though this version sounds stunted and lacks perkyness, to start, the jammy mid-section picks up steam. However, Bobby's a nice bolero; some nice vocal/guitar showmanship. "Candyman" is fine. "Lazy/Supp" gets tense midway through...but the remote tinny-ness of the sound doesn't make one want to listen to this version again. "Loser" is a good call. It's cry of pleading desperation is a long-time fav of mine. "Minglewood's" decent, Brent and Phil add a nice one-two punch on the 1st jam which provides some light for a typically painful Bobby slide solo. "Ease" is bouncy but a tad too abrupt. Probably because it's not a set closer, will "Passenger" be? It's a decent redition made all the more interesting by Jerry's lightning quick, if not staggering, solo.
2nd Set: Your standard good-time "Miracle" opens up things with its matrimonial partner "Bertha" following suit. Both the big 'B' and the following "Good Lovin" are standard stuff. The tinny remoteness is really starting to majorly affect my enjoyment of this show. It removes any thunderous force that might have been evident during the live performance. However, this archaic sound is appropriate for a weary, country-soul "Ship." "Estimated" is solid with a nice power climax @ 5:15. The following jam is not momentous, but undeniably enters a differing sphere. Just as Jerry powerfully connects with the stars, the effort gets drawn to "Eyes." It's a lovely floating version. "Drums/Space" are appropriately non-grounded. "Truckin" sounds more pertinent than usual and Mydland's Hammond greatly helps the increase of billowing smoke from the stack. "Stella" is lovely like usual, and "Around" closes off the show with a much needed hard-rocking bluster.
No encore to speak of.
I delayed writing this review for a few days because of the sound quality; it really removes the fun from this process.

We actually talked my sister into attending this show. She feel asleep. This is very fine AUD for the period and and great show to boot. There is no encore because some wise idiot threw his shirt at Bobby and Bobby had to shake it off his playing hand. This was my 4th show in my GD history. To bad there is no 3 and a half rating.
