but I kind of knew which way this one was gonna go when they brought out a gorgeous To Lay Me Down. When they followed with a wild though short Cassidy, it was confirmed. A hot second set was coming, and they didn't disappoint. Foolish Heart had my jaw hitting the floor, it was on fire with an extra jam that they would later remove. Looks LIke Rain -- not my choice for the 2nd set, but it was followed with a nice, fine Eyes. The post Drums part smoked as well. Check out Brent vocalizing along with his organ solo on It's All Over Now -- good stuff.

speed please! 1 star for recording (although yes, it prob sounds better than most of my old tapes too, good point!), 5 for performance = 3. Stream the CM remaster over this one, that's a 5*. Performance wise show is very nice with a powerful intro Iko GSET Peggy-O. Foolish Heart, Eyes LLR Wheel make for a great 2nd set. Best show of the run IMO.

My first show.........oh dear lord, now i understand why I got on the bus that night.
I remember getting in on a miracle. That morning, a friend at the time rolled past the house as I was having coffee on the porch. He mentioned he was
...
headed out to Chicago to see the Dead, would I like to tag along. Sure, was my answer. I had been listening to shows and was VERY interested to see why my friends were so wrapped up in them. We hit the lot at around two in the afternoon, he looked at me and said, "Dont get lost. Once an hour, meet me over there," pointed to the gate we were parked in front of and said, "Have fun, but not too much!" and winked at me. Back then, camping was still allowed, so sleepy eyed heads were starting to come to, get shakedown set up and start another day. Right away I knew, I could feel this was something special, something to be a part of. It was still a very intimate, small scene....I saw someone with a bud the size of a ruler holding it out for all to see to trade for a ticket, RIGHT next to a cop, neither caring what the other did. I kept meeting my friend as instructed, and about an hour before showtime, he asked how much bread I had....I had enough to fill the tank for the ride home and wasn't touching that. He smiled, said "No sweat, bro, we will get you in. Put your finger in the air like this, and if anyone asks tell them its your first show, and that you need a miracle." I thought he was crazy, but did it anyway....and bang! This stranger believed me, reached in his pocket and said, "Then this is for you, have a good show!", hugged me and disappeared. Lo' and behold a ticket for the show. It wasn't the first miracle of the night, but certainly the best. Met my friend, we went in, he found some righteously clean, er, ahem, catalyst, and they busted out with Iko. All of a sudden, my body was moving this way and that and I could NOT stop dancing, and didn't care. One of the tapes I had been listening to was an acoustic show and had of all things a To Lay Me Down. I had told my friend I wanted to hear that, he grinned and said "Don't count on it, but maybe," and there it was in the first set. Second miracle. I remember thinking all through the show what an amazing secret this was, and felt so very appreciative at having been introduced to it. The whole first set, I was just more amazed at each song, and even more amazed at how more in sync I felt with each new song with the band. Now that I listen to it again, I giggle a little bit. Quite an intro to the boys. I couldn't keep the smiles and amazing energy from bubbling out of me at that show, and swore before first set was over it wouldn't be my last. During set break, my friend took me through the maze of Rosemont Horizon's outer halls just for kicks....It gets blurry into second set, but I do remember thinking a couple of things.....One, Brent used to use a particular midi sound much like a xylophone, or rattling bones, and laughing about their bones and our bones knocking into each other. During d/s I remember thinking that the music had left the band's control and that it was controlling them and us and everything as it was whipped around the stadium quadraphonically. I swear, it felt as though it had become it's own entity (or so it sounded). My apologies for waxing nostalgic. Sonically, the recording sounds as if the Dolby button on the tape deck has been pushed. You get used to it very quickly. Setwise, first set, SMOKIN', Jerry brings tears to my eyes with the To Lay Me Down, love the Peggy'o. Second set doesnt disappoint, and the GDTRFB is such a treat to hear anytime they played it, an anthem of sorts. The Wheel coming out of space, I swear to this day saved my bit of sanity that night.....space melted my head into colorful gooey ideas of self aware music and such. Now that Im all grown up, my weakness is audio gear.....and for why? to listen to jerry and crew at just over comfortable levels, close my eyes and remember when ".....at that show, do you remember.....yeah brother.....and do you and do you and do you......" stole it right offa my head......was on the bus from then on until jerry shuffled off. thanks for indulging my longwinded review. five stars just cause it was my first. ;)

Concludes a solid run in northwest chicago
1st Set: A lively "Iko" starts out the final show in Rosemont, IL. However, the sound does come off as a bit muffled and sheathed by a thick sheet. I'm

hearing the tuning for the "Greatest." A conversation between Brent and Jerry provide a good partioning between the nuanced verses...I've always enjoyed how the song provides opportunities to intentionally cause contortions. Well, the next song is labeled as 'El Paso' but we know better, don't we "Peggy?" A countrified Hammond hoe-down "All Over Now" breezily, if not attiudinally, continues the set. If I was singing this tune, I'd be ribaldrously furious. Of course in my melancholic state, I can only think of someone with a earthier essence stealing my behtrothed during an intime "To Lay." I need to be rejuvenated, thank goodness for "Cassidy." It's mellow but fluid leading into the predictable "Ease" to close out a consistently professional if not overly inspired set of music. 2nd Set: Metaphors abound in "Foolish," but the heart cannot evade itself when an arrow has been shot through...the song builds momentum, but tonight's energy isn't as forceful as te previous two. However, the musicianship does not lag as evidenced by the delicate, soothing sounds... But, sure, take the dagger and twist it inside... "LLR." How many times have I cried during disappointing twists in my romantic life? It's the stinging Scorpio inside me that feeds off the misery. C'mon kid, think outside your own petty emotional box and develop a social conscious, "Eyes." No opening exploration but warm gooey tones. Jazzy offerings by an eager to perform bunch lead into a twenty minute "Drums->Space" session. The stakes rise as both develop leading us to the brink of madness. Thankfully "the Wheel" provides a firm base to rest our anxieties. Yes, by the middle of the third minute. business is picking up. Jerry brightly inspires Bobby to pick up his vocal game during a bright, sing-a-long "Miracle." Check out those yelps at 2:06-2:08. A scratchy, slightly inebriated finger pointing "Fantasy->Hey Jude Reprise" follows. Hey, twinkle toes, "GDTRFB" is just good-time music. We're rock and rolling now... obliging the crowd with some dance music before they skip town. "Good Lovin" closes out the second set... hey, why not give the kid the second verse? More fun-lovin as this sounds surprisingly fresh and Bobby's not just talking to anonymously to the crowd. Tonight's encore is a unsettling "Baby Blue." We've all been kissed off; unfortunately I have to see mine everyday. :) "thank you, Goodnight." 3 1/5th stars

star show. First set is top notch. Foolish Heart rocks, it's short but oh so sweet with a wonderful Mydland solo in the mid section that leads right into a sick Garcia solo segment. I got down to the front row on Phil's side this night, his bass shook me to the core of my existence. Minor cut on Don't Ease.
The quality of this show sound is pretty good, a 4. The first set is just phenomenal- a 5 in my book for music content! The second set is solid but...

the entire compilation is a 4. My brother just gave this to me, and it is great. I was at the 4/11, but obviously missed out. To Lay Me Down is so very powerful, it gives me goosebumps, and brings a tear of extasy to my eye. Listen to this loud & uninterupted for best experience! I also have this with a Peggy-O, not El Paso. DeadBase says it is Peggy-O, so the listing is incorrect, but the music contained is correct.
