Subject: Openers
I remember getting these tapes.
The buzz was around the Spring tour was the return of "Box of Rain" {Hampton}.
While I thought it was great - more so b/c the band had not played the song since '73, I think the novelty of Phil singing (for me) had already hit home with Gimmie Some Lovin' and Why Don't we do it In the Road {Both busted out in '84}.
Anyway with that in mind, I thought the triage of openers in the first set Gimme>Deal, Hand Jive was one of the strongest since the previous April (8th) one year earlier. You wanted to catch your breath but at the same time it was like "keep going!!" Again, this being the first set.
At a time when 38-40 minute first sets were growing increasingly common, this one - while still under an hour - is over 50 minutes and each song is well executed.
The second set is great - Shakedown>Samson is a reminder to me of two songs that should made a great one -two punch for opening the second set.
He's Gone>Spoonful is spooky (still not IMHO as erie as Richmond 11/1/85) and you can hear
Jerry(?) start to lay down the Truckin' intro about 4 seconds into Spoonful. He plays it for a good 5 seconds. Not exactly a Cosmic Charlie moment, but it illustrates the band's collective ability to "read" each other. I don't think the song fully establishes itself as "Spoonful" - in terms of all band members - until around the 28 second remark. {Yes, I had a little time on my hands today!}.
I have never heard a soundboard (another reviewer mentioned this below} from this show. I would love to hear one. But for me - this is one that the audience needs to be heard!
God bless and Enjoy 4 stars

yep "Once in a While You Can Get Shown the Light" well this was the night I saw it. During the jam in "Deal" (The time was approximately 5:30). I said "Oh they can do that ! Well, I'm not leaving" and I didn't. This was also my first GD "Gimme Some Lovin'" which was a favorite.
I'd like to know why this audience recording is the only one that's been available for the past 20 years (oh my good has it been that long ago ?). Where's the soundboard ?

One of my favorite shows. Took an extra long spring break my junior year to swing through a few of these shows on the East coast. Listening to Spoonful gets me every time.

If your gonna use 2 discs for this one(Why use a third for 2 songs??),don't make the mistake I did and put the encore on the end of the first disc(Hey it was only Day Job,should be in the first set anyway),put the Shakedown there instead, cuz the track marker between Good Love and Day Job is f*cked,I mean there is like a minute of Good Love left on the Day Job track. That's my only beef with this one....

Looks like this was just added up here. Haven't sound checked, but I was lucky to be at this one.
Interestingly, Shakedown>Samson like 1985 Spectrum. Monster "wolf call" Other One, and classic 85-86 era Comes A Time. Best of 1986 along with the Kaiser run.

Decent sound quality (can be fixed with equalization) but hot show. I love Jerry's guitar soloing around this time. Highlights are the tasty Deal, rare Willie and Hand Jive, Good Lovin, along with the before mentioned Comes A Time.
