Last 3 songs set one and Buddy Cianci
Is this a review of Buddy'y activities at the time? The Mayor? Obviously. I like how the band says they aren't political but are saying all kinds of things nonverbally here. onwards. Why say things when you can infer them and get in less trouble. Meanwhile 90% of those who hear it don't catch that kind of sociopolitical context. Jerry smart, other humans not so much............ That's The Grateful Dead. That's why we went to 241 shows.

The Other One
I remember really liking this show, mostly because of The Other One. The Other One was often a disappointment in the band's later years, but this one is really good for the era. Phil is on, and this recording captures it well.

2nd Set LLR
"A well-paced but kinda fruitless "LLR" follows."
2nd set never was nor shouldn't be the place for Looks Like Rain. It is bad enough to see this in the 1st set. It was a real bummer when Weir started doing this occasionally in the 2nd set!!

It's a rainbow full of sound
My first show -- my father sat down and cried . . . went with my older brother, a veteran of many shows, and fellow travelers. "Boo" (he's gone) christened me with a hand-made t-shirt of garcia on the mound in a Dead Sox uniform. I may have been too caught up in the Shakedown Street scene to notice the heat coming by, but I do remember an impressively tall guy in a dark cape standing in the parking lot silently holding a pole adorned with street signs reading "Reagan Knew", "I don't recall" and other Iran-Contra goodies. Peace and Love to all.

Not impressed
I am not a fullblown deadhead; more like a partial fan. Loved the handful of concerts I hit in the early 90's, enjoy most of the music, particularly the live performances. Find this set pretty dull by my perspective. But dont pretend to be an expert.

Choose yesterday over today
"Movin' right along in search of good times and good news- good friends you can't lose... this Has become a habit."
1st Set: A relatively mellow "Mississippi" opens up tonight's festivities. I figured either a 'Minglewood' or "Rooster" and we're stuck with the latter. The version is at its best during the surging power of the mid-section jams. (6:15-7:30) I hope a loved one is nearby as we're slinking to a "TLEO." It's a tad too contently nice without displaying any sexual or romantic prowess. Is this the first non-Dylan "Queen Jane?" Passionately, if definitely not effortless, sung, the dynamics of the tune have Not to be perfected. Wow...we're really pushing the laid-back vibe tonight as a well-harmonized but unthrilling "Row" sits in. Oooohhh yea, Phil... that's a great funky riff he opens "Music" with. It's just a blessing to dance again, ya hear? It doesn't go That over the top...meaning, most likely, a "Don't Ease." Tis fine.
2nd Set: Do ya hear the clanging guitar chords? "Hell" is in the house. However, it's not causing the requisite raucousness to impress. Consider it a single. Hmmm...that's odd-we're going into a stand-along "Fire." Nothing astounding, but it burrows into a deep, somewhat sticky groove. A well-paced but kinda fruitless "LLR" follows. "Terrapin" lucidly if blandly followed. A few minutes are cut out of this "Drums" sequence. A relatively mild "Space" even as the boys are heading down the perilous path of "TOO." Things get appropriately chaotic as they enter the 5's. My eyes always faintly mist as a "Stella" is announced. It's a goose-bump experience to have heard it live. Hmmm...only an averagee version tho. A smooth increasingly hectic "Lovelight" closes matters.
More balladry with the "Black Muddy" selection.
A professionally non-distinctive evening of music. 2 3/4 stars.

I was lucky enough to see this last Prov. Civic Center run. A beautiful place to see the dead once inside(small , intimate , 16,000?) however the police were a terror to everyone. If they saw anyoneone who happened to be doing the very least possible thing illegal (including drinking beer in "public" meaning any pay city parking lot which cost you at least 20$)
and if they did it publicly- they got picked up by the roving police wagons.
Each night 100+ people jailed by prov police , including two of my friends. We were all heavily " contemplating the philosophers fungal stone "
when 5 cops ran out of a wagon and grabbed whomever they saw first-unluckily two were my 17 y/o and 18 y/o friends - luckily I was freaking out in the back seat of a car at the time and escaped incarceration by a mere few minutes,
The 17 y/o had to have his parents come and pick him up at the station - 1the 8y/o spent the night in jail for consuming alchol in public , underage - they wouldn't even give us an amount of $ to bail himout after the show - we tried! We went to the police station after being totally blown away by this "philosophers stone " and the show.
Download this board - it's majestic.
