Great sequence
This run got just a little better each night, though with different highlights, natch. This was the night with the most rain - an overhead tarp precipitously collected gallons of water over the boys. At one point it emptied on top of Bobby! Dangerous for a guitar player connected to such amperage. Down in the city convection caused a hailstorm that did great damage. They had the Events Center in Boulder set up on standby, though for whatever reason did not move. But you know how we are: knights doing psychonaut battle; all in this together. The show is known for the multi-peak China>Rider>Smarter.
First Set. Try an AUD for less distortion in the Hellina opener. On Candyman you can see that they are actually playing well despite the equip and weather probs. See, See Rider is good even with the Bobby Slide Practice™. The rest is average '84, with more equip issues during the apropos Cold Rain and Snow, and Dough Knees dispatching the short set with enough excitement to leave 'em happy, if drenched.
Second Set. Correct the pitch to see why this set is a treat. Bobby asks for a vote for a morning show (to avoid the daily foothill-descending showers), and then they launch an intricate, excellent China Cat>Rider. Things seem pretty standard for Dewiminna, but it blows wide with amazing inspiration from Jer. Ship is a solid example and, in an atypical placement, Let it Grow has a nice end jam. Mickey plays a balafon in Drums (listen around 7:00>). Wheel>Miracle is good, but Bobby's voice is gone by this point and he uses the unusual technique of trying to strain it more (you know, for the next night). Stella Blue is great, but Bobby probably didn't want his turn for Sugar Mag. Jer passes the torch, waits, waits: too bad sucker - there'll be tea and honey in 20mins! The encore is perfect - Jer had a good set.
1st Set: C+
2nd Set: B
Overall = 3½ stars
Highlights:
China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider - intricate; listen more than once
Man Smart Women Smarter - amazing inspiration
It's All Over Now Baby Blue - Jer capping his good set
SOURCES: Balance is wack on both SBDs, but the separation is delicious, with Brent right and Bobby left. The 135955_sbd_cm_remaster has slightly better sound on the high end for the first set, but cuts the tunings and dispenses the Bobby patter. The second set has digital distortion and wild pitch variation, needing +1% for Hellina>Candyman & China Cat>Let it Grow. It needs +1.5% for See See through Dough Knees and +2% for Space through the encore. The ladner_11263 is the most complete and less distorted. Just EQ the highs a little and adjust the balance. The pitch is easier to tame, needing +2%. A MTX would sweeten this show. The suraci_78363 is the AUD with correct pitch, and it has the Bobby vote at the beginning of the 2nd set.

Oh yeah, Rain Rocks
Right, you can actually hear the wind and rain interfering with Bobby on the Brother Esau.
This was immediately after the stage crew looked up a weighted, billowing tarp of water right above Jerry's head during the Ramble On Rose, and took big sticks with cloth on the end and punched the water out of the tarp before it burst and electrocuted Garcia.
I was 3rd row center stage for this concert, best seat I ever had at any Red Rocks show.
Much to everyone's happiness the rain cleared after the first set and the sun came out. Thus "The Vote". You can hear it better on the auds, although nobody seems to recorded it in entirety. "Look, it never rains here in the morning", Bobby said, "so let's take a vote, how many of you would come see us play here in the morning?" Crowd cheers and they launch into China Cat Sunflower.
Next year in 1985 they scheduled 2 pm shows and it was blazing sun for all three days! Ha-ha. The irony.
Stella Blue was certainly a highlight of the show, along with I Know You Rider, Drums > Space > The Wheel, Women Are Smarter and Baby Blue. Terrific version of these classic GD songs. Check it out!
Oh man, 84 Drums > Space were the best. On this one you get Mickey's echoing balafon blending over into into a sweet duet guitar jam. Oh so good. All echoey and gooey. Long live Dead Rocks!
5 stars for sound quality. Great 1984 sounboard!

Annual Red Rocks rainout!
"Hail the size of Beachballs!"...Weir
(Actually 5 miles away in Arvada hail did something like 100 million in damage, but it did hail for a short tine on the Rocks)
All the weather related lyrics apply.
Out in the Cold Rain & Snow (well there was no snow), Cool Colorado rain!
If the Thunder don't get you the Lightning will!
I remember when Bobby got drenched! The wind was blowing pretty good and the tarp over the stage would fill up and then the wind would gust and the water kept coming down all around the stage. Got a great picture of the moon peaking through the clouds with the night lights of Denver below.

A night of rain...
This was a very soggy we rainy show. There was one part ion the show where an overhead tarp collected gallons of water. At one point it emptied on top of Bobby and he got drenched! It was like he was judy Carne and had just said sock it to me...
The other part of this show that was a highlite was the Ship of Fools. Cold cloudy and rainy until Ship of fools. The cloud coverage broke and a bright full moon burst thru the clouds lighting up the sky. The crowd started cheering because it was amazing. Of course the boys had thier back to all of this and did not seem to know what was going on. When Jerry was singing "I can not share your laughter..." It seemed very appropriate.
The June 12th show from the Friday night before was one of my favorite shows of all time. The best first set with a defineitve Mexicali blues alas is no where to be found. The audince recording (if I can dig it out of my basement) simply does that show no jsutice and thus is not worth posting. June 12th 1984 Red Rocks is a holy grail for me. The search continues...

06-12-84 Red Rocks?
These were my first & only Red Rocks shows. I rode my Lil' Suzuki GS300 all night from Sacramento & lost my friends on the way. Made it to the shows. I am wondering where the June 12th show is from this series?
These were some hot shows. Lightning & thunder all 3 days.
