just stopped by cause i had to say
This Tennessee Jed is great. Even before the jam, Jerry is champing at the bit, just tossing licks all over the place - in that way that only he could - quirky, odd, brilliant, emphatic.
Then he drills his solo too. Sweet.

one of my favorite 2nd sets of 82
the first set is solid but nothing too memorable, gotta love Tennessee Jed though. Set 2 holds the magic however. the Playin>iko>playin jam speaks for itself but the Sailor>Saint is surprisingly satisfying, as I don't usually love those songs as much as most dead tunes especially not smack dab in the midst of a religious set 2 like the boys were already cooking up in the kitchen on this night. DON'T SKIP ON THE DRUMS BRO. Space>The Wheel is always a welcome experience and putting the Playin reprise after that works nicely of course, as does the muddy-in-the-best-way sounding Black Peter. Poor Peter. I never really cared for Around & Around and as far as my taste is concerned i don't mind set 2 being cut a lil short on this one, as the missing songs are usually skippable anyways. (i miss US Blues here but honestly what I really miss is those good ole 74 US Blues set 1 openers)

The low recording levels of this show reminded me of a strongly held belief from the time that nothing should be recorded any where near the saturation point of the tape. We religiously turned the levels down to max hit the zeros to avoid any distortion, I wonder now about that so-called wisdom. Certainly I've heard tapes that are distorted due to high levels, but there are far more where the signal is too low. Do low-signal tapes degrade sooner? Is there more latent noise? Too late now, the milk has been spilt.

Excellent SBD
not too much high-end. Can hear bass notes clearly. Nice job taping, wonder if Healy made this. There's no messing around with the levels at the beginning, everything's just exactly perfect. 5 star quality.
I didn't notice any problems with the performance- sounds like it was a fun, high-energy show.

Jerry's Birthday
On the occassion of Jerry's Birthday 2006 I thought I would remind folks about the sweet birthday Jam of Playin > Iko in okc on his 40th.
After the late night the night before the boys seemed kind of tired and this show was nice but fairly mellow. The highlight is the 2nd set opener, Playin/Iko.This was a real nice smallish (6,000 ppl) outdoor venue that was a favorite stop on the midwest summer tour in the 80's, with tall trees all around the perimeter and red mud beneath the grass. The boys seemed to like this place and played great shows here all three visits in 81,82 and 85

Word was the band had not slept at all before this one as they started celebrating jerrys bday at midnight the night b4......plus the long drives between the last few shows....anyway 1st set was a disaster but they found a 2nd wind groove for the 2nd set ...good ol' grateful dead........ Happy bday jerry.....

China>Rider and on
Up until China Cat this one's a struggle. Just sounds like Jerry is struggling to get to his comfort zone. But by the segue into Rider he has found it. The rest of the show from here is really cookin'.

Nice 82 show. Short and sweet.
This is much better than the audience tape I had. I could not listen to the tape because one could hear a young child complaining throughout to their parent "daddy it's too loud and hurts my ears" and "I dont feel well. I want to go home". All the time you could hear this "father" talking to his friend and ignoring his child.

Happy Birthday Jerry !!!!!!!
This was a very well played solid show with some nice surprises along the way. I personally love the playin > Aiko > Lost Sailor> Saints. The playin is fairly short, but very well jammed followed by my personal favorite Aiko, played slowly with a nice funky groove for 10 minutes, a nice celebration for Jerry. the Lost sailor > Saint is great as well, its the only time I can recall that they jammed after "I'm gonna go for it ...for sure" and then come back to the refrain, very nice. All in All a solid show and I think, a nice addition to anyones collection.

One of the first tapes in my collection
My brother shared a copy of the second set of this show with me..not the best quality and maybe not the best show. But..the second set just amazed me in that it is all connected..I don't think they stopped any song..just kept going from one to another..I kept asking him..how do they go from Playin' into Iko..but man oh man, they do. I don't know if I'll like it as much now as I did back then (could have been my condition at the time) but I'll sure give it a try..downloading it now!

Jerry's 40th Bday
-Jerry's 40th Birthday Show-Yes it was hot in Oklahoma, the band had some good moments though- (IKO-IKO), Around N Around with the remarks about letting the animals out- Sound Quality on this is pretty good-saw a video a few years ago of this show that was pretty good
I remember there being lots of room to dance-you could walk right up to the front of the stage in front of Ol' Jerry with no problem-Hot milk jugs of beer for $7.00 inside the show, and the highlight was the bikers who brought in a painted coffin and danced on it all day long in the hot sun-
Quality-For nostalgia only-since i was there i downloaded this version-Aloha

Really bad vibe all day from the caged animals to the music!
It was really hot and the show was postponed for a couple of hours. At the start of the show it was still painfully hot and the part of the stage where Jerry was wasnÃÂt not covered for the first hour or so. Jerry looked seriously distressed.
Anyway, I don't remember anything special about this show other than the Aiko was Festive. The band was not on and the vibe was downright bad. Animals were really hot and locked up. Bobby's comment about letting the animals out reflected the weirdness. Then to top it off at the end of the show a 40 year old hippie still twisting to the tunes in his head was grabbed by a couple of Oakie security guys. Needless to say they kicked the shit out of this poor guy for no other reason than he was very different from them. Anyway, that just capped the really bad vibe. I still had a good time in spite of it. Not much to do with the show though. I'd pass on this one.

Jerry's Birthday Jam
I remeber that day a little different. It was hot but that's OK in the Summer. The band struggled to get going but by "Uncle" Jerry was in his groove. Bob made a zoo reference to "lettin' all the animals out" and you could hear the elephants in the background. This was the first time I heard them play IKO IKO and being from New Orleans, we were estatic. The rest of the show smoked in my opinion. Had a great time and hope you appreciate this imperfect but fine recording.

Good but not great
I remember the show started relatively early and the temperature was (or had been that day) around 100-105 degrees. You could tell the band was struggling with the heat and Jerry almost looked distressed (maybe a bit too much birthday celebrations?) They played a short set and took a long break before coming out to play a really nice second set after the heat had rolled back down a bit. At times Jerry seemed to be soloing a bit aimlessly but overall the band was spot-on. Good recording, if not great.
