My first GD Show
This was my first time seeing the Dead too! I was also 16. I recall being mesmerized by this guy dancing on a little landing between two staircases. That guy danced the whole show. I to converted from heavy metal to good ol' soulful blues that night.

This is my first Grateful Dead concert
So I was 16 years old and this is my first Grateful Dead concert and I live in the
area.my first dead show was at UCLA 2/21/1982 (i recall the date cause it was a friend's birthday...after that I became completely obsessed and went to nye shows (5) that year... only 17 no one would let me have a hotel room and I ended up crashing in a room of kind folks who took pity on me! I loved the community that was so friendly, finally I found a group of folks that accepted me. I was not the weirdist person anymore hahahaa...Something also happened at that UCLA show that I never saw at dead show, during the space part, in the hallways people were all making really strange sounds, it was just so different than anything else I had ever heard or seen...it was not even something you would have expected at a dead show.. its hard to describe but tribal would be one aspect. Before that I was into metal. I went to see ozzy first solo tour with Randy Rhodes, with motorhead opening long beach it was amazing but scared me really bad, it was so violent -people were randomly punching people in audience, there were scary people there, or at least so I felt, and someone got stabbed outside after as I was a walking around in a haze., I converted into the peace hippy thing afterwards.. I can not believe they played Casey jones as someone says below after everyone left wow... that just hurts now hahahaha

At the time of this show it was pretty common to have assigned seats because of the unfortunate incident with the Who. My friends and I got distracted on a football field adjacent to Pauley and entered the show just as the band started playing Shakedown. Blame it on distraction, all but one of us ended up standing next to the board for the first set - perfect. At the break we realized we were a man down and went to the upper bowl seats printed on our tickets to discover one pretty unhappy camper. His enthusiasm for the first set did not match ours.

china-rider
although the chinacat and most of the transition is missing the IKYrider is typical for the period, ie good although much better versions exist ie late 1980/ early 81.
There's the 'extra' guitar break between 'March winds' and 'wish I were a headlight.'
Check out the versions from the short winter tour of 3/81.MSG, cleveland, etc ALL the versions from that tour are smokin' with the extra, longer guitar breaks and of course providence 9/80 etc

Great night
The reviews written buy people who were there are by far the best to read. Good comments jack Straw. I saw all the Feb '82 shows, I'm partial to the Warfields but San Diego and Pauley were both a lot of fun. Real well played shows. Check it out.

Great freakin' sound on this rocker of a show..I'm with njpg on "The first set is worth the ticket" The Shakedown>Minglewood to start the show sets the pace!! Jerry goes off on the Shakedown and Bobby is sliding all over Minglewood!! everything else is well played but doesn't have the energy of the beginning and end..so the Bertha> Women R Smarter sizzles to end a pretty good 1st set!! Only disappointment with start of 2nd set is China Cat is missing and that hurts!! From Estimated on through to>> Sugar Maggs is tight and well played!! I am a big fan of Brokedown Palace for an encore and you feel this one..so please>GIVE IT A WHIRL!! Forever Grateful>Forever Dead!!!!!!

Phil drops bombs NFA>STELLA
This show is strong throughout, however, China cat is missing from this version.
The first set is real nice throughout, with a great Shakedown, Bird Song and a unique Bertha > Women Smart ending!!
The second set is real nice as well, everything is well played. The truly extraordinary section of this show, in my opinion, is after drums, specifically Phil's work from the intro to NFA through Stella Blue. Check out the NFA, It is fast paced for the era and Phil carpet bombs the intro to and the outro of NFA and into the intro of Stella Blue with very sweet bass at the close of the song as he and Jerry trade licks in a way that I have not heard since. A really nice 1982 show with some really classic Phil moments.
I know that the China Cat is out there, I used to have a nice audience tape of this show that included it, but it seems to have disappeared over the years. I hope there is someone out there with another version of this that includes the China Cat.

Was there
I never really write reviews but in this case I'll make an exception. After Brokedown Palace, the band left the stage for a few minutes and then came back and did a second encore of Casey Jones. Most people had already left and I doubt that there were more than a couple hundred people left. Bob had blown his speaker during Brokedown and during Casey it was rattling away like mad.

I goddamn live for reviews like that one! Thanks for the comedy!! Great show, too. I am just stuck on 82-84 for the highs and lows. Sound is a lil' flat. ... Dead show, homework, lots of weed, and 9 hotdogs--if that ain't a west LA fadeaway...I don't know what is!

Great listen from beginning to end
Bobby's guitar tone is really on tonight. It's this show that made me realize he's one of the greatest rhythm guitar players in the world,if you can even call him a rhythm guitar player or even a musician for that matter. Bob Weir is more an artist than anything. A walking encyclopedia of broken guitar chords. His playing resembles a cartoon almost, the way it glows and how he highlites certain accents and phrases. It has this compressed function about it but there is a locomotive energy or an animal inside his playing, there's something alive and unharnessed in the workings of it all and you can hear it wanting to grow like a watercolor paint stain.

Fifth show, Final night, of a February California Freakout Fest
After a Hightly listenable three night stand at the Greek, let's try a hometown show 3 months earlier at Pauley.
1st Set: It wouldn't be an Angelino type of evening if we didn't start out "Shakin'." Jerry's been forced into shape considering the past week of shows along the Cali coast. And his leadership shows...I wish the mix was a little heavier on the bass end, but, beggars can't be choosers. No brilliant jamming, but plenty of funky times nonetheless. A decent "Minglewood" follows continuing the festivities. "Westwood beauties" who would have thunk we'd get a neighborhood reference? Effective Brent mid 3's. Ooooo, we've got ourseleves some tinny piano on an ok power-balladish "Friend." Hmmm... only a six second break, and some riffs til an "Uncle." "River" through "Rooster" are rather sloppy/choppy/cut-happy. "Bertha" builds steam and purpose as it goes. "Man Smart" is actually quite the surprise closer; dynamic with some tight off-kilter timing and adventurous sonic chords.
2nd Set: Oh My God!! we're missing "China" completely and enter on the moment of orgasm. That's unjustified and cruel. Solid. Appreciative energy throughout "Estimated;" not the spaciest, but increased attention to the delineation of the beat into a noodlefest of joy. The gears stop and pause so we can segue into "Eyes." Not much of an intro, verse enters at :24. The version grows on ya so by
3:15 you're conceding to that utopic vision. However, there's very little outside the box work here as this version's less than 7 minutes. Speedily we stroll into an elongated 11 plus "Drums." Rapidly we ascend into tangible/mildly creepy if overpressed "Space." A very nicely constructed, gotta dig Brent's level of engagement, if a bit constricted "NFA" is next. A lovely & triumphant (3:40-4:10) "Stella" is next. A consistent treat of this show is that every song is well-pronouced when it debuts...and "Sugar" is no exception; it's a rockin/bringing the ceilings down.
"Breakdown" is appropriately drowsy and the only way to end this 5 shows in 6 nights campaign.
Missing songs and weak mid first set action limits this tape to a 3 1/3 show...

Great Show, Good Recording
I really like the early 80's Dead. I think there was a new found energy to the Dead after their break in the late 70's and this energy is mixed with the seasoned experience that comes from playing together for so long. Garcia on Tiger is a sound I will always love. In this show Garcia is simply on fire. He brings on waves of euphoria and the band is right there with him. This was clearly a night where the magic of the Grateful Dead was at full energy levels. The recording quality is such that I really enjoy listening to it. Not all SBD recordings seem mixed well, this one is. Great solos from Brent and Jerry, and Jerry's guitar while Bob is signing clearly shows he was in the mood to jam in a big way. Enjoy!
