I did this backwards. Here's my review of the 16th
My review of the 15th is at the SBD MC listing for the 16th.
Those who care to chase after the good stuff: Check out "Mexicali Blues". Jerry rides it and rides it. Way longer solo break than usual.
During 1988 Jerry was goofing around pretending to launch "China Cat" and then not starting. This happens big-time here, then we finally get liftoff, and it's a super-high-energy version. The show finally sputters at "Ship of Fools". Then during the encore, Jerry's voice cracks, and we are left to wonder whether the 1988 laryngitis is about to come back. Luckily there was no show on the 17th, so Jerry got to go someplace comfy to rest up again....

It's better than it sounds
Very strong first set. Check out the solos in Sugaree. Yes, set one is only six songs, but it more than makes up for its brevity. Second set is also very focused.

Very good performance. Grate recording. You can hear Phil and the drums clearly. Often the drums get lost on sbds.

Better than night before
Overall: I think of this as a solid 88 show. Great soundboard recording. Worth a listen if you're into 1988.
The scene: my last show of the tour. I'd been on board since Landover, and all my family had since gone home. I made the trip to NYC despite being pretty scared of the place (too big and crowded for my young mind at that time). But after spending the first night by myself in the VW parked in a parking structure (sooo different than the scenes in Landover and Philly obviously), I sold off my one last ticket for one of the next week's shows and boogied home.
The music: good solid first set. Bobby does a great job on Desolation Row, which I always wished he played more. Good Cassidy and Deal, but not spectacular. Second set is solid (better than any of the second sets for the last bunch of shows). Very nice, albiet a little short, Crazy>Playin>Uncle>Playin. Very high energy post-space, as opposed to the previous night.

Purdy good
Set opens up with the usual stron "Bucket" and the "Sugaree" as is heartbreaking as it is uplifting. There is definatly more landscape to this show than the previous night. The rest of the set purrs along to the set closer "deal" which kicks ass. The "Cassidy" is real trippy. I think the set was too short but other than that is a good first set specimen.
I certainly like the second set better than the previous nights. "Crazy Fingers" is one of my favorites. The "Playing- Uncle John-Playing" into Drums/Space is a classic sequence with alot of twists and turns in the jamming. The show wraps up kind of quick after that but the "Lovelight" kicks butt. A good, slightly above average Grateful Dead experience overall.

Someone please help me
I was wondering if anyone knows how I could get a copy of this show so I could burn it to CD.
My parents went to this show togther right before they got married, and my mom is a huge dead fan. I was hoping for christmas to get her a copy of it on CD. I have this saved to my computer but it is in streaming format so I can't burn it to CD. Does anyone know where I could get a copy of the show, or could someone email me this file?
Anyone with information please email shutupandgoaway2000@

Sept. 15, 1988, he's choking to death
I attended this show, and still have the ticket with the Hot97FM insignia on the back. Great seats, eleventh row, the closet I would ever get to the stage of a Dead show. I could see their expressions. I remember it as a great concert, arguably my favorite.
Now as I listen to Crazy Fingers, I am struck by GarciaâÃÂÃÂs pained voice. He seems unable to keep up with the melody, literally croaking on, âÃÂÃÂGone are the broken eyesâÃÂæâÃÂàHeâÃÂÃÂs choking. ItâÃÂÃÂs the giant elephant in the room. But tell me IâÃÂÃÂm wrong. IâÃÂÃÂm hearing Jerry sing himself to death.
In at least one of his obituaries, it was said he had a âÃÂÃÂreedyâÃÂàvoice, reedy in the sense of a musical instrument. It was never a strong voice. He rarely if ever belted. But at its best, it was an instrument that caught surprising nuances in the melody, not unlike his guitar playing. And he had range, not huge. But it was there. And he could sustain. Listen to his voice from 1972, even âÃÂÃÂ78. ThereâÃÂÃÂs nothing he canâÃÂÃÂt sing, no note he canâÃÂÃÂt reach when he needs to. Now listen to Crazy Fingers from this concert, and tell me he isnâÃÂÃÂt choking. His voice got better than this in the early 90s at times, but not much. This is why I find it hard to listen to late Dead. I wonder what I was thinking as I stood and probably danced to that Crazy Fingers 18 years ago?

Brighter and mostly more robust than previous energy
1st Set: You know tonight will be more uplifting and will rock harder than the previous solemn evening. No matter how many times I try, this stream disallows me access to what I'll assume was a ripsnortin' "Hell." Its married right hand "Sugaree" follows. Jerry's magically directing traffic. "Row" is tight and playful; it's always a positive when they're listening to one another. Some sound gurgles hamper an otherwise alive "Cassidy." A minor interruption aside (tune-up? another song?) "Deal" thrills in most of the right nooks and crannies. Jerry lights up a searing thrust before exiting.
2nd Set: This must be skip the intended smokin set openers night as "Samson" is Not registering or being recognized for me :( Furthermore, before the song Phil says "For anyone out there who has kids, my son just said rock & roll for the first time." Making matters disarming is that "Crazy"'s arrival is jangly and loud. It settles down and creates delicious waves that groove into a stomper of a "Playin." Immediate attack upon the invaders, and the aggression scares off the weak front...then dazed. Yea, it's unfortunate that "Uncle" is sung without breadth though he delivers a pretty sedated solo. "Drums/Space" pass through my vacuous head and enters Brent almost stationary ballad "Take You Home." Some minor-league snarls and intensity represent "Watchtower." Fan those flames Jerry...are the drummers bashing in trash cans?, "GDTRFB" Crisp clean lines Jerry baby...almost a 'Blow Away' tease in outro..."Lovelite" lacks fireworks that burst any with any brighter pizazz than previous tune despite at the end, Bobby running with the vocal scales and Phil brillianly right after him...
A standard "US Blues" closes out another enjoyable show from the mecca.

MSG Run
Sound quality is great. Great Desolation - IMHO better than the one I heard at the Spectrum 89?, Samson, US Blues. Phil Speaks - "To anyone out there who has kids - my son just said rock and roll for the first time tonight." Awesome moment. Thanks archive. The Alabama Forgetaway from the night before still cracks me up.

Short but Sweet
This show is very good, with nice sound quality. Sugaree alone is worth the DL, Jerry really croons, and sticks every lick. Good Desolation, if you like that sort of thing...
While the sets are short, the quality and the energy are very high...I loved these MSG runs, '87, '88, '89 all had some very sweet shows. Enjoy.
