Best 14th birthday a teenager could have.
Was always a dead head as i was raised on it. Airplane also. Anyway was my 2nd ever concert and my first introduction into the wild world of acid and dollar "j's". I'll never forget the show. a friend i went with died 6 months later, so even more memorable for me.The Zoo always had a good sound and a great vibe.

Solid moments, top Bertha and Iko.
There seems to be a vibe on these boards that I've seen before. I was here first adn it was better before you got here. Or I was here first so I know more than you. Or It all ended when Pig died/Keith/Donna left, yada yade. or. the worst, it ain't real dead unless it was pre-1966-06-06 on some shit recording. 'I was there, maaan.' Whatever.
This is one of my favorite Berthas....quintessential battle between Jerry and Bob, wrestling for control during the solo. Jerry comes out crisp and clear...band on notice. You can sense Phil feels it the second time thru the solo, then Bob rally's the band thru the climax, everyone keeping pace. A classic. Nice moments switching between D7, Dmaj and A7/Amaj on Iko....enough that I model my Iko solos on this version. The double stops as he ends it are simple and effective, the way good guitar playing should be.

09/02/85! One of the top shows of the ‘85 IMO
This was the very day I was born. And I can almost hear my mom delivering me all the way from Minnesota (great audio these ‘85 boards!)
But seriously, I love 1985 shows for some reason. There’s some hot pockets in there before Jerry had his coma in 86 (probably from the hot pockets, no but really) I am so grateful to have been born on a day that there was a Grateful Dead live performance. I love finding friends birthday shows etc. And I’m sure many of you born between 66-95 have various bday dates that coincide with The Grateful Dead concert of any given day. I love that about the band. They actually sound pretty strong this show. Jerry’s voice and guitar although not smoking are definitely on point. Nice hearing Brent in the mix and Phil and Bobby and the Rhythm Devils Billy and Mickey, excellent audio balance! Decent song selection, the audience seems to be diggin it too! Enjoy this beautiful 1985 GD show that also happens to be the day I came into being.
Much love and compassion and empathy and imagination and laughter and joy and peace and fun and happiness and success and beauty to you all!

Like many, I was not a fan of Day Job. Listening to it now, I'm not sure that it's much different than Don't Ease Me in...I won't call it a favorite, but I don't mind it like I used to.

'80's
My buddy says "listen to the '80's, listen to the '80's". So, I TRY to listen to the '80's. I mean, 1980's Grateful Dead is better than anything else available at the time, I'll give you that. But, for me, well, I always end up back in the '70's and before. I like listening to the boys when they were playing the music that made their reputation, not coasting on the reputation that earlier music established.

Don't Need Playin'
I could swear Brent was trying to segue into Don't Need Love before drums. The scat was fun, and the B3 instead of piano on I Know You Rider gave it a different feel. Listening-wise, a decent '85 show overall. Experience-wise, it was nice to see them back on track after the 2 spotty Texas shows. And I suppose it was appropriate that Day Job close out our Labor Day party.

scatting Brent
Definitely Brent scatting during his Minglewood solo. This was not uncommon. I have heard many shows with him doing this. Mostly the blues songs including Red Rooster and so on.
I'm assuming kctomato was at this show for the play by play of Phil's night, but I didn't hear that much more "going off" than usual during Me & My Uncle, but I did hear the bass troubles.
Anyway, good show and recording. Love the '85 boards.

Homestate Show. The Band is ON!
Pretty DAMN good sounding board. Bertha is rockin', and don't miss the Brent scat during Minglewood. West L.A. rips, Bucket closes out the set Right.
DAMN, this show just rocks from start to finish.

This show was fun!
I have to agree with Purple Gel. I loved the Phil licks during Uncle. While a previous reviewer seems to dismiss it because of the reasons behind it. My take is that I am not that concerned about why something like that happened, it was always nice to hear a new take on any song, especially one like Me & My Uncle, a song that seldom seemed to change much at all. If it took soundboard problems to bring out something new and quite unique, I say someone needed to sabotage the soundboard more often...LOL . The Aiko is really nice, especially coming out of another New Orleans song, Stagger Lee. This was a really nice show, and a wonderful late summer afternoon at the Zoo.

Caution: Slippery when wet
This show is wet to the touch.'Ramble on Rose' The band really gets the gist of it on this version also 'Bucket'is strong.Playin jam goes to some interesting places like so many 85 version but this one the boys suddenly turn into the chamber orchestra at the end of it delivering some very fine melodic lines.Xylophones are light speed and
involved.these spaces from KC and Rocks are so disturbing and haunted that they would frighten Marilyn Manson. 4 for sound quality and 4 for playing

Sweet 1985
They were firing on all cylinders - Listen to Jer really reach for the high notes in Set I, Stagger Lee, Mwood is very hot, Ramble on Rose - These are all played when he is on... This is a great place to see a show and I have no doubts it was hopping this Sep night nearly 20 years ago.

Phil Jams because...
Yes Phil was going off during Me and My Uncle. He was doing so for a reason. One of his speakers was blown. He was trying to get HP's attention drawn to it so he was purposely overdriving it.
He started to play the upper registers so it would drive the speakers and HP could climb around on the left side speaker tower and find the right cabinet.
Phil was disgusted by the sound and seemed really annoyed. When he finally got HP's attention drawn to it and he started to stress the cones which thrilled the crowd by Phil "going off". Phil just looked at HP and shook his head in disgust as if to say "they'll cheer anything!". He then laughed and made the best of it by hamming it up. Garcia was giving Phil the stare down over the eyeglasses and grinning. In this SDB you can hear that best at about 2 minutes into the song when it really rasps out that speaker.
HP identified it and it was disconnected.
Seemed I recall Bob had some equipement problems too.

Phil jams Me & my Uncle
Very nice show. What a treat to see Jerry power in to Aiko after stagger lee, seeming to take the rest of the boys by surprise. Check out Phil in the break of Me & My uncle, he goes nuts. Very good second set too, with Playin & China Doll as highlights. I had a very airy sounding aud tape of this show, and still played it a lot, It is so nicce to have a great sounding copy now, i love this show. This was one of my favorite venues for the early eighties, and the boys always seemed to be happy to be there. It seemed to always be one of the top shows of the midwest/Rocky Mtn outdoors summer tours.

THE DEAD SMOKE OKC!
a great, fun and sizzlin' show from the summer '85 tour. the dead arrive in okc like an F5 torndado and take off with a ferocious fury that starts strong and doesn't let up. it's been my experience since listening to and collecting the dead for almost forty years that most any show that starts with "bertha" is gonna be an ass kicker. this one passes the test and then some. hot, hot playing by everyone with strong phil and tremendous mydland. listen to mydland scat sing during his solo on "minglewood". garcia and the rest of the boys are cookin' and enjoyin' the ride! the dead always played great shows, often overlooked until dick's picks 19, in oklahoma city. here's another one. a must have from '85.
