Subject: Great Example of 1st day of 3 Day Run of Shows
Many complaints and Praises for the 90s
This run was top Notch. And the crowd was happy hi and all in.
I remember thinking at the time too, well I hope this isn't how all 3 nights are going to be. But they were just getting warmed up.
If you put all 3 together it's a true gem from this Era.
There's no better way to see the dead than a multi night stand at the same venue. Just a little bit more !

This wasn’t a “jam” or a “teaser” they just flat out couldn’t get it together so they aborted it.

The Peggy-O solo is SMOKING HOT. Stranger is too, but Jerry's guitar was turned way down at first. You've got to listen hard, but he's ripping. The listen to the crowd when it gets turned up. This Venue was home turf for me, and an absolute blast. Lovely campgrounds to seek refuge after the shows. Oh to be 19 again!

Subject: Sugar Mag Clapper
Subject: Sugar Mag Clapper
This is one of those funny memories that I'm pretty sure happened. Sitting halfway up the lower bowl side/backstage (Phil's side) during the ramp up of the sunshine daydream part, I thought a person near me was clapping quarter notes in the dead space. So I started clapping too. Pretty soon the whole section is clapping quarter notes and the drums aren't even playing. Then Jerry turned and looked up to see what was going on. Pretty sure I saw him smile but I wasn't that close to see. Thirty years later you can hear it clearly on this great recording. It definitely happened. Now I'm just not sure if I heard the clapping or started it. Maybe only one other person knows for sure. You out there, partner?

This recording really captures what was going on. The sound of the hall is near perfection. You can hear it when everyone is getting off, but not too much. This recording is precisely why I don't enjoy soundboards as much as perfect audience recordings. Well done!
As for the show itself, the energy is carefully managed by the band in a subtle manner. Foolish Heart is absolutely wonderful, and while doesn't go for the most ripping climax ever, it is so nicely layered. Eyes is also not a blowout, but rather carefully executed ear candy. Sugar mag....yes. What I night. Wish I caught this one!

If memory serves it had been a while since they did an Estimated->Eyes into drums during this time period. Its not pre-1991 but this was a good 2nd set. We literally drove 80 mph from Ann Arbor to Cleveland and just made show on time.

This was a decent show, but the decline over '91 in particular was palpable. The recording is solid, but not superb. The coliseum's sound was actually decent for an arena. Much, much better than for example the Omni in Atlanta. The energy at these shows was great as well, with Dead Heads from all over the midwest and beyond converging on this God forsaken town in the middle of frickin no-where. It's half way between Cleveland and Akron. I guess that was the idea back in the early 70s when they built the monstrosity. All the same, it was the venue of many a great show and I remember it fondly.

This show Jerry has a good solo but it's not his Best peggy-o. Listen to some 77 shows you will get goose bumps! New Haven has a good Peggy-o

I went to all three of these shows and had a wonder-full time. This night I was particularly high and left thinking it was the best show I had seen[after 11 shows]. Driving out from Illinios my freind said all he wanted to here was an Eyes into drums[they werent doing it much at that point], so we were estatic when they broke into it out of a stellar Estimated. I was familiar enough with the band to know they hadn't played this classic combo since Brent. The Foolish Heart is a great version but not the best, even of 93[check out 6-11 or 6-16].Post space is killer; with a smokin' Miracle out of space, an odd SOTM jam, a great Black Peter with contributions from Jerry and Vince, and a Sugar Mag with Bobby doing his classic lunges from the edge of the stage and really getting into it, then everybody contributing for a sweet Weight. To me Vince really shines at this show, Jerry also gets some great runs in. This is the first tour that he busted out the lightening bolt, a new guitar with a crystal clear tone, I think this contributes to the special quality of this show. Now the bad news; this place had horrible sound and it definately comes through on the tape,I remember at the show I coundnt recognize the Stranger until Bobby started singing, and I usually could guess the song just from the tuning. Thats how bad the sound was. Also IMHO theres some fairly sloppy playing here. I think a soundboard would better showcase this performance but I have never seen one. Oh well, there's plenty of good sounding and well played 93 shows out there[the entire summer tour east and west].

For Peggy-O fans, may I offer May 5, 1977 at the New Haven Coliseum? Garcia's solo gives me chills and the sound quality is wonderful.
Enjoy.

The big coliseum shows just don't have the soul of smaller venues.
Best Peggy-o? Great Eyes? Go check out some of the '70s shows. In this show, Jerry's guitar sits in the back seat in Eyes.
Try 9/10/74 for a truly top-form Peggy-O. In that show, listen to what Jerry does with his voice, the subtle twists, the expression, the quality.
The sound here isn't all that great, either. Sounds like they're playing in cave.

Great show indeed. But the best Peggy-o of all time? Foolish Heart isnt even the Best 1 of 93. That said, First set was average. I felt Garcia solo was pretty weak on Foolish although the Rest of the boys played well. Estimated- Eyes was definetly the Highlight of this show. Eyes is fast paced and the whole Band is in the groove. Believe it or not vinces playing is excellent blows away Keith on piano.

Don't think I would go as far as saying the best of the three night stand 9-10-93 was Stellar! And the Morning Dew on 9-9-93 put a sparkle in my eyes. But this show had it 's highlights as well one of my fav Sugar Mags the energy was out of this world.Another highlight was the Peggy O as well as Jerry really standing out giving it all on that Black Peter and what about The Weight left this show with a smile 4 sure. And anxious for what the other 2 nights would bring.

This show was great! Drove up to Ohio from Athens, GA and heard the first Esti>Eyes since brent's death. Not to mention a Foolish to open the 2nd set. The SOTM jam was surreal....
