of like a kid opening a present on their birthday , jerry picks this thing like a banjo at a bluegrass festival . once you have the perspective of the new guitar he got at the beginning of the fall 93 tour , listen carefully to his finger picking throughout this show . jump to sugaree for a prime example , but it's their throughout the show ....( dire wolf!!!)

Terrapin Still Rocks

rawkin'. For that, go to the 1980s. No, it is not Hartford or Englishtown '77. It is a different Grateful Dead in 1993. It is a more pensive sound. Some may not like the crisp, acoustic-like sounds of Jerry that Fall, but I do. Phil is able to bubble forth with clarity. Jerry's singing is on. The drummers play with crisp bongo sounds, and the tempo is steady-Eddie. The spacier, dreamier breaks between verses proper are liquid dreamy. My only beef are the occasionally excessive synth sounds from Vince. A little B3 or piano would have sufficed. The jam following Terrapin is spacey, and if that is your flavor of GD, take a taste. If not, pass it on. Right away, as the post-lyrical jam builds, there is a lilting, off-kilter sound which continues deep into the jam, floating off like a butterfly. (That transition was such an exciting shift at that time.) Still digging it after all these years. Thanks, Jerry!

What band is this again?
I have been on a tear lookin for shows with great Terrapins. Recently I listened to 3-15-90 and was blown away, especially by the creative and unique jams

involved. So stumbled upon this show--look, almost 18 minute eyes, 25 minute terrapin, dire wolf, how could you go wrong?? Yet this show sucks. There are two main reasons why. 1. The sound. The sound sucks. It sounds like the guys are sitting in a small room with a carpeted floor, playing with toy guitars and plastic drums. Nothing echoes at all. The crowd sounds like a distant computer cooling fan. 2. The most important songs--Eyes and Terrapin--just don't come together. Eyes lasts 17 minutes yes, but I swear for the vast majority the drums are completely off the beat relative to Jerry's guitar. You can't even dance because the drums sound completely inert and fight the guitar the entire time. It made me wonder if I was really listening to the Grateful Dead or a teenage cover band. Terrapin is decent, during the verses, but the final jam doesn't go to any cool planets like other Terrapins. It starts out with some cool kernels of emotion in there but then just kinda fizzles itself out, and becomes effectively "Space" pretty quick. The other songs aren't bad, but if 17.5+25=42.5 minutes of the show is just "eh", the show sucks.
25 minutes of Terrapin, solid from start to finish. I cannot say enough about it. Maybe the best ever, at a minimum give 3/15/90 a run for its money. As

for the rest of the show, it is solid to, with great sound quality on the board. One of the best shows from the last great year of the Dead. Listen to this Terrapin... have your kids listen to it... and any future descendants, all generations, you have should also listen to this starting from the mother's womb.

and boys put forth a good effort. Jerry uses an acoustic guitar-sounding effect throughout alot of '93 this that gives the songs a neat organic-yet-electric feel. Performance; not particularly spectacular, but not particularly weak. Song Selection; decent. 25 minute Terrapin. Eternity - blech.

show because the Eyes of the World ROCKS. It clocks in at around 18:00 from what i recall, complete with Jerry midi and all. The intro is super sweet; Jerry hits some lovely notes before the first verse. The audience source really exemplifies what I'm talking about, which is why, in some ways, it is an equal in quality in my eyes. But knowing the fluidity of the grooves in the audience source, I now know what I'm getting here and I could not be happier. Admittedly the first set is not anything remarkable, but the second set punctuated by the long jammy Eyes and Terrapin is worth it alone. Taking into account the very decent second set as well as the sound quality, it gets a four - Crispy and sweet.

This version sounds a lot better than the other 9/29/93 posted. It is not as muffled & the vocals are coming through nicely. Sample the Dire Wolf....
