Or do you not even own Deadbase? Regardless, this is an historic show because they opened with a Brent tune for the first time ever and it was glorious. And I was there.

Brent fan, I think that this is the tour where Brent fully carved out his niche as an important member of this band. Beware that even though this is a high quality sbd, there are some interference/static issues present throughout the show.

Passable first night
1st Set: Commencing the first of five nights at MSG is a brisk tho measured "Hey Pocky Way." It's smartly played; energetic and present enough to make

an impression; though Not outlandish enough to outstep its purpose...to welcome the crowd for what hopefully will be a highly entertaining five nights. "Minglewood" is a very nice follow-up as it always gets my feet moving. Odd though cause Bobby seemingly skips the first verse...or his mic was turned off. ?! "Push" is more charming than usual. Oh my goodness there's been a "Communist sabotage. Some of Brent's Communist friends have 'dodged' my speakers. Our All-American Hero/champion of the day Steve is going to fix this for us...and once again Justice will prevail..Let's have a big hand for 'Truth, Justice and the American Way." And then, we get a kooky "Beer Barrel Polka" Good times :) "So now that Bren't Communist friends have had a laugh, we can get on with the show." 30 seconds later, we're into a sexy shoulder gyrating "Uncle/Mexicali" combo. Time to chill on a very un-NYC like, decent "Row." "Queen" is still in its rough, rambling infancy stages. Interestingly enough, one can almost feel the vague yet certainly unruly boisterousness that epitomizes the NYC crowd. "Tennessee" is a tad too mild-mannered, yet Jerry's plucking is sufficiently sloshed. Therefore, it shouldn't surprise to hear how erratically effective he was as the set progressed. As evidence I offer this "Music" where Jerry's in and out of the game. However, combine Phil's stability and the band pulling off a successful climactic jam to relieve any doubts that they would fall apart in the 2nd. 2nd Set: Always a friendly step to offer "China/Rider." Like most of this evening's renditions, each song contains moments ranging from mildly enjoyable to outright complelling. Bobby's outrageously over-the-top vocal talents animate an otherwise standard "Estimated." Sadly, like always there's a complete lack of intro in the "Eyes." The first few minutes are bogged down in sticky-land preventing it from taking flight. Luckily, the open spaces are filled with coherent storytelling and are sufficently ethereal."Drums" starts out mild but quickly escalates into sinister/destructive (6's)realms. "Space" sears through a polluted mind, its laser beams slashing and bashing any walls. It's not Grade-A hysteria though. A skittish "The Wheel" emerges from the clarity. Afterwards, the Hammond comes to life for a decent "Gimme." What melody/song comprises the chords Jerry is playing 2:37-2:42? We then Stroll into a standard grieving "Black" before making back to comfortable waters with "Sugar." Good ol' Grateful Dead. Tonight's encore selection is of the calming yet carefully well-sung and musically strong "Baby Blue" variety. 3 stars

shit out of all three tours that year also towards your downhill statement I'm a big Phil Lesh fan, however his comments about Jerry in the end sucked, and don't use his crappy downhill statement the fans were downhill at the end of the GD's last couple of years/Jerry was really sick I believe after his incident in '92. Sorry if I sound like an asshole it's just that the Dead played shitty shows every year ya know that eh?

flawlessly - not a single wrong note, no fumbling for lyrics, and Jerry's voice is REALLY strong on this night. He belts out his numbers with that renewed '87 vigor after his '86 health problems. Jboy - stop posting about every show you've ever heard. Your pretentious pontificating is embarrassing. Stick to the ones you've actually attended. And should download this for Jerry's feedback Space. It sounds like the old "Feedback" days. He barely plays any notes - it's all this insane feedback, unlike any of the other noodling (yet enjoyable) spaces I've heard. TONS of energy in this show and the band is sharp and focused. Perfect performances of every song (at least in the second set - haven't downloaded the first yet). DEFINITELY worth your time - Jerry inverts two of the verses of China Cat, but doesn't miss a beat (or lyric). It pains me to hear any show after I went to the MSG run in '91 - it was all downhill from there. I quit going to shows at the right time. I had the good fortune to see two Dark Stars (one with Marsalis), Two Help/Slips, Attics of My Life, Black Throated Wind, Dancin in the Streets, Handjive, Midnight Hour, a Spanish Jam, They Love Each Other, Comes a time, and just about everything I always wanted to hear them play (except We Bid You Goodnight, which still pains me).
