Marin County Veteran's Aud is a gem of a place to see the Dead if you like venues that are shaped like a spaceship and hold less than 2,000 Northern California freaks. Personally, that's my kind of venue. Saw JGB there in 1987 and it was terrific.
This show starts out pretty energetically and the sound is pristine, although Jerry tends to be a little further back in the mix than I like. With all due respect to those that are ready to canonize this show, I am not in agreement. It is a pretty average show for the period. I am not knocking it, their average is great but it is still average. I have always liked the term "workman" to describe a night where they showed up, played their hearts out but for whatever reason, it was just a routine night of playing music. This is a smidge better than that but not by a lot.
I'll give it four stars because it is worth a listen but it's not making my list of favorite shows. To those that love it - rock on! That's why there's chocolate and vanilla ice cream.

Subject: Groovin' in Marin
Came foe the SCARLET>FIRE, ended up staying for the whole show.
First, a word on this S>F...I don't know where this one was hiding, but it's time it stepped out into the light. The Scarlet is good, the transition jam is funky and interesting, but it's the FIRE that really grabs you. Brent is just all over the first third, rippling and punching and filling with all kinds of calypso-themed riffs, just infusing this version with island rhythms....then Jerry breaks into the fore after the 2nd verse and rages this sucker right into a picture-perfect return coda. It's gold, and falls into my top 3 FIREs of all time.
Overall, this show has a very groovy feel...it's less speeded-out than a lot of its early-80's bretheren (e.g. check out the behind-the-backbeat groove on "Women R Smarter")...Brent and Bobby goof around with the cadence and tempo and it's clear they're having a blast.
Also, Garcia's vocals in this show, while '84 raw to be sure, actually hold together, and the effect is more Tom Waits-ish than the sad frog-in-a-blender pinchiness that accompanies most every post-'83 performance. he shines especially on the aforementioned FIRE and ALABAMA and again on an inspired HE'S GONE.
The SPACE is "Allah"-tinged which makes it more interesting than most and they finish up w/a fine T-STONES/NFA combo.
This is very close to a 5-star show (a bit of sloppiness in some of the first set prevents me from going the full 5) but the sound quality of the board is A-1 and pretty to hear.
you can't go wrong. I call this one a hidden gem despite the fair # of reviews here...I just never had it on my radar....now it's very much in the rotation.

It makes the band sound like a creepy carnival organ
Somebody needs to tell this guy that this is exactly what Dupree's is supposed to sound like.
If I remember correctly, wasn't Dupree's written after spacing on an old carnival/circus poster?
And as far as cracking on Healy/Brent- maybe he should consider getting in to a 'better' band- maybe the Monkees or something

Dan Healy, you should have stayed the hell away from any mixers or audio effects boards. Maybe you can adjust things a little, but do not mess with the effects while the boys are playing!

you are a moron ....first off Brent played Hammond and some type of Moog-ish stuff in this time period....they wanted to change their sound when they got Brent...they weren't looking for a copy of Keith
and secondly ...when you hear a board you ARE NOT hearing a "mix" the recording actually comes before most of the adjustments ...if you want to hear what this show actually sounded like ...listen to an AUD. source
I'm sure if Brent were alive he would most interested in your opinion of his equipment choices .
and its a shame The Dead didn't have your application ...perhaps you could have stolen Healy's job ....apparently you are more skilled in the ways of sound management than their crew

I really wanted to like this show, given that I'm a huge fan of a good creative, drawn-out scarlet fire. But I listened the whole show through, and I'm sorry but I just have to disagree with the majority. Unfortunately, the band's performance is great, just marred by sound production issues. I really just have to place the blame for this musical failure solely on Brent Mydland and Dan Healy, or whoever approved of these guys.
Brent, you should Never have taken anything except a regular old grand piano. Or if you did, you should have made it sound like one.
Dan Healy, you should have stayed the hell away from any mixers or audio effects boards. Maybe you can adjust things a little, but do not mess with the effects while the boys are playing!
For a great example of the mess these two guys can make together, try listening to the Dupree's here (cringe-worthy abuse of the band's sound). It makes the band sound like a creepy carnival organ. Or, especially, the tragic end of Scarlet-Fire. Jerry pulls out some amazing riffs, Phil is bouncing all over the place and Bobby's guitar is screeching in time, but then WTF? Dan Healy abruptly cranks up a huge reverb effect on Jerry. Ok...this could sound good..if they had not made it so abrupt--then WTF? about a minute later, it's completely switched off just as abruptly!
Needless to say, this kind of sound abuse really kills the rockin' mood.
Anyway if you can tolerate the fake sound effects and still enjoy the performance, get this, otherwise keep your ears behind the april 1979 line in the sand.

Subject: Great Run
Subject: Great Run
I grew up on the East Coast, saw 118 shows. My first West Coast shows were not until ventura '85, so I missed this run. But I always had the tapes of this and the fall '83 run, this place is amazing and seeing the Dead there would just ahve been too much. Anyone out there see a s how at the Berkeley Comm. Thetaer, as well as Marin Civic? I'd love to hear a comparison. I saw the Greek '86 shows but never made it to the BCT. Touch came soon and they could not play the sweet small places after that.
This is one of my all-time Scarlet > Fires and I have many in my nearly 2000 hrs. of live Dead. They did many early that year - this one, Hampton 4/13, Philly 4/20 (I agree with SUNPYG - and I love Zappa - this is a monster version), Providence 4/26. That said I totally agree with BigBoyPeete, I get tired of seeing reviews just base don a year also. "Well it's 84, so blah blah blah...." And half thos epeople never even saw the Dead at all, let alone in that year. They're just going by tapes and/or what someone else said. This was a real solid year overall, I saw about 14 shows that year, and was a great lead-in to the phenomenal year that was '85 for the 20th anniversary. As for '84, aside form the spring shpws I mentioned earlier, get this whole run, Eugene, Red Rocks, Merriweather, Greeks, Richmond, Alpine, Syracuse for a killer Shakedown, ditto New year's, that is an all-time Shakedown. And that would be a good start for the year.

Subject: Some very sweet treats in this one!
While the show as a whole is no stellar beast of a show, there are several gems that make this show worthwhile.
1.) Minglewood - I'm always hesitant to call any song the "best" version because a lot of that subjective rating depends on my mood, so I usally call a song in a show a "top 5" or "top 10." This, however, is undoubtedly the best I've heard.
2.) He's Gone - trippy ending that left me with chills down my spine.
3.) Scarlet>Fire, especially the Fire
Of course, there are its downsides, like Jerry's voice, which stratocaster once described in a post about 1984 as "fozzee the bear pudding throat."
Overall a very creative show. It felt as if they were really channeling something cosmic. It may not be a top 10 for the year, and it's not even a 5 star show. It does prove, however, that there was a lot of good stuff in 1984 and it set the stage for a very nice 4/1/84 show at the same location.

for some reason, i love space from 83 through 85. perhaps this is because it's when i began really "getting it," or it's because the space from that era really is that good.
there's often an egyptian flair to the drums and then the rhythm of jerry's noodles. the effects are mesmerizing. marin county vets with airto the previous fall takes the cake, but this is still pretty dang good. one can hear elements of what would be developed later on that coming summer at the greek.
ok, it's not blues for allah in any sense of the word, but it still has that flavor.

Pretty cool setlist. Never been much a fan of Alabama getaway but this one is real good. I'd have to say though that the best performance of the night is the LLR. I'm sure there are some of you out there who disagree but if you pay attention to all of the songs played that night, they were most definetly ON during that song. I was lucky enough to get this show before it turned into stream only. the He's Gone is pretty sweet as well. wheres the Baby Blue?

Not every Dead show is designed to catapult you
to the outer recesses of the Universe. Some exist
merely to be highly satisfying showcases of their
unique musical skills and powers of expression.
Such is the case here. A real charmer. Definitely a download!
Curious footnote. If some-one had fired this up on the stereo and challenged me to guess the time period, I would have said 1981 or thereabouts. Very retro for the period!

Late '83 Scar>Fires were stretching out nicely (12/27 for example). This version goes one step further still. Fantastic stuff.
the best one though, was yet to come. Lookout Philly 04/20!!
I really like the rest of this show too. You can tell they were on home turf. Confident & relaxed as though they were playing in Jerry's front room - which they nearly are (geographically speaking).

Nice kick off to a smokin tour to come. This is quaint venue in Jerry's backyard. These are the shows I really dig. Close atmosphere with fans and band and everyone's high as kite. How lucky were the Heads that attended these shows. Man I couldnt imagine, Bay area '84 spring tour in such a small venue. The Hult center shows in May are similar the bands hittin' hard in a small cozy venue. Must of been a blast.
1983 and 84 were the years Brent came into his own. That's why I like listening to this time period so much with all sorts of sounds and textures coming out. Phil bass around this period was sonic, check out this Stranger it's sick. So many highlights-Scarlet>Fire, He's Gone,Dire Wolf, Minglwood and I love this Althea.

This show's sound is not quite crisp; its actually a bit like 6 hour old toast in the tropics. The sound is not so bad that you can't tell that they all need to clear their throats a few bazillion times. Soudns like they whacked a few balls and ate some salt and vinegar potato chips. A-hem.
The playing, however, is pretty good for a bunch of forty year olds.
Check out S->Fire. I love those mid 80's boiling syrupy jams. (or is it jelly?) Phil's pretty heavy in this mix, and Bobby's "muphuhmpha flashin'" and "blububuh washnim, reckless and hot" all the way through Stranger. Hey! Haaaay!
Get on with the show.

But I never was a huge fan of this show from this lackluster year - it is frustrating more than anything else, you feel them about to really crush it and they never quite get there except with mwood which brent just shines on and parts of fire. The NFA is what keeps this from a '3'.'84 was a beat year between the bookends of '83 and '85 and don't feel this show warrants all the hoopla - passed on the tape from a guy who was there as soon as he got back from the show in March of '84. Low 4 / high 3 you may not agree however all I have to go on is the tape.

Ask, and ye shall receive. Here it is, the complete show, without cuts, in nice, crisp SBD. As I said in my revew of the truncated version, this is a relaxed, innovative performance that communicates the intimacy of the hall. Jerry may have been in sad shape back then, but he could still deliver the goods musically. The only minor quibble I have with this seed is the missing encore. But you can't have everything. Apart from that, this is an extremely welcome addition to the archive. Way to go, guys!
