A throwback show of sorts
It’s been a while since this show has seen a review.
Most would agree that fall of 72 is a high water mark for the band. What’s not mentioned here is that this second set features one of just three versions of "Baby Blue" between 1970 and August 1981. On top of that, a version of "Cryptical" follows just after that. In fact, the last one until June 1985, folks. (and the only version in 1972)
I agree with most of what Evan S. Hunt said back in 2011 (as to the question of the band ever being dosed in later years)... but I have to say, Garcia seemed to have some ol 1960s nostalgia on this night.
Other than all that, great playing throughout. Most of this run east coast run is superb.

"All The World`s A Stage"
I found this show to be off to a good start over the first few songs, but by China Cat I`m wondering if the original tape is a bit slow. Maybe it just me...hmm?
My tendency is to find what is exceptional in a show; so I`m not really keen on giving highly critical reviews.
I have found a number of reviewers quite tactful in calling certain points into question; while others put their ignorance on display by being a little over ambitious to criticize.
Really, if i`m not finding a show to be exceptional somehow, I won`t bother to review it at all.
So yeah, obviously don`t miss giving this one a go. It is a bit too subjective for me to define, but I`ll definitely be coming back to this one.
Overall, I find most reviews and personal experiences shared here to be entertaining, enlightening and amusing.
Everyone is playing there part; or "All The World`s A Stage; And all the men and women merely players, They have their exits and entrances, and one man his time plays many parts".

Ain't a place a man can hide
Real good with a lot of the newer format of 73-74 before it became formatted.
I like Donna with the band but I didn't really notice her in the mix until later in the show.
This one for those who like the tight versions of the classic story songs yet the jam in 'the Other One' did me some good as well.

More Transitional Dead....
This wonderful show starts off a bit murky with a somewhat uneven mix. Phil is way out front, and the drums almost buried. But things eventually smooth out, and by the second set, we're treated to a great-sounding board recording.
As with the other shows from this month, the band is really telegraphing what they would be doing throughout most of 1973. "Playing in the Band" is becoming a highlight, and this one is no exception, with some really fantastic jamming throughout. The rest of the set features pretty much all the staples from this era, with the whole thing logging in at 200 minutes.
Really, you can't go wrong here. Fabulous show, from an overlooked period.

All kinds of awesome
A rare full on That's It For The Other One and that's only the beginning! Hadn't done it for some time hence the shakiness. Still really nice to hear.
I have had a huge chunk of this one on tape for a long time and I actually prefer my tape's sound to this although this is much cleaner.
Love!

Promised Land
Coming out of the 'orchestra pit' dialogue between Bobby and Jerry-this is my favorite version and for some reason I always come back to it. It may be one of my top 50 of any GD song or version ever! Check it out, turn it up, its fast and doesn't last long...but Bobby's scream at the end of the song will make you wanna crash through a window and get on a jet to the Golden State!!

Re: Did the Dead Dose?
This is in response to reviewer SteveOK: After the early days of 65-66 the band rarely performed while zonked on LSD. The reason: They just could not play well enough to get paid during the days when they went outside of their home area.
If they did any stimulates while performing live on stage it was usually a little pot smoked by Jerry, and a few Heinekens for Phil. A few times it was suspected that they did some blow between sets because they needed a pick me up.
You never saw evidence of Bobby, the drummers, or any of the various keyboardists ever consuming any substances other than a cigarette and a can of coke.
People think that Pigpen boozed it up before during and after a show. This is a falsehood. Blue Ron drank whenever he was not expected to perform whether on stage or in the studio and he was decidedly opposed to LSD consumption or any sort of related un-professionalism such as being high on stage or in the studio.
By 1972, Bobby was essentially drug free although he did manage to develop a propensity for good American whisky while off stage.
Keith got into his drugging while away from the rest of the band. Donna did so also, but was not near as much a loadee as her bandmates -- when they were not performing.
T.C., ever level-headed and erudite, was always pretty much a pothead. Brent slipped into oblivion during his tenure but it was rarely LSD and it was rarely evident on stage. Same can be said for Bruce or Vince.
In reality, this band was very conservative, both in their playing on stage or in the studio, because they realized at an early juncture that they could not cope with the demands of being professional musicians and songwriters while being blasted on drugs or alcohol.
It is a myth to assume these people were always rollicked to the gills on some sort of psychedelic cocktail of kosher or non-kosher substances. Though they all had their moments of super indulgence, they were too serious about what they were doing to be stoned alla time.
The tragedy regarding the band's heroin use in the 80's was limited to off stage. They did use a lot of blow during the 70's and 80's but it was rarely ever used before or during a performance. -- They just couldn't function while being stoned and preferred to be completely clean and sober when they hit the stage or crowded into the studio.
There is documented a few isolated times when one or the other band member was dosed, but this was a rare occasion.
Other than all that, this is a good show.

One wonders if this was the last Cryptical because they were tired of playing it or because there were numerous mistakes one this one...and perhaps it signaled the end of playing this song as well as they would have liked.

Super 72' Soundboard.
Here's a nice East Coast show for your listening enjoyment.
This show has the energy of a NYC show, probably because it was filled with New Yorkers...
I highly recommend adding this show to your 1972 GRATEFUL DEAD collection, it's 100% devoid of MH.
Donna and Bobby's vocal mix is very nice.
Keith sounds really good.
Garcia's sound is still intact.
You get the songs, the jams, the sound, the excitement like it should be, like it was.

This is a great hidden gem...sound quality=5; show quality=5... as I wrote on the 9/24/72 review, I had attended some shows (not the Dead, but Bobby's band) and this place was a real fire trap. It would have been incredible to see the Dead there. It was recently renovated and the pics of it look pretty nice. Overall, great show; worth the download.

Sound quality is great, another warm SBD. And the band is on fire, as they were for almost all of fall '72
Highlights include a roaring China > Rider, a frenetic spaced-out Playin', a rocking Promised > Bertha > Greatest Story 2nd set intro, and a MASSIVE Cryptical > Drums > Other 1 > Wharf Rat before closing things out with can't-possibly-dance-this-hard Sugar Mags, GDTRFB > NFA > One More Saturday.
Like everything else from 9/72, just get this.

Previous reviews were right on. The Other One > Wharf Rat (without the final TOO verse) is excellent Dead.
Though the first set lags, and the Playin is unimpressive, I do really like this FOTD.

Very significant show
Phil & Friends played this in 2003 I think... One of the first big river's I am aware of, very hot sugaree, Tenn Jed is excellent, China>Rider... Very trippy playin (love those '72's). The Other One I like even better than Stanley Theatre and I think that one is a killer - this one is a hard hitting psychedelic tour de force and Jerry makes full use of the flanger and Wa Wa, this never lets up and cracks you right betweeen the eyes over and over. If you go to the palace Theatre website there are all of these Greek Frescoes on the roof from the 1920's I can imagine being all jacked up during this other one and tearing my hear out while Jerry takes full control our collective psyche. You can taste and smell this Other One.
The only reason this is not a 5 is because it is stuck in a year where 5's were banged out like chicklets.
This night also represents a few milestones:
First Baby Blue since 11/08/70 (and rarely played prior)
One of the first Big Rivers
THE LAST CRYPTICAL UNTIL 6/16/85 (being a huge fan of this when I saw this at Merriwether on 6/30/85 I almost did a back handspring)
Why no one had reviewed this is mind boggling to me....
