Subject: Smokin Show!!
Subject: Smokin Show!!
I was 15 years old, and it was the only time I ever saw the Dead. I was hanging out in the parking lot the night before with a beautiful girl from my highschool (Carmel High School) and we had the best time walking the lot for hours the night before. When I was at the show on the the 7th, I had lawn seats with my friend and his mom, and I had an unbelievably good time that night, and literally changed over night, in more than one way. We left before they had finished the show, but I had a blast. I was absolutely hooked on the dead after that night. I had been listening to the dead since I was a freshman, but that night solidified my induction into becoming a dead head. I miss the dead head community so much and the kindness and love that I got from so many of the heads at the show. When we were walking back out to the parking lot, this deadhead couple made me a grill cheese sandwhich out of the back of their VW bus and didn’t charge me for it, they were the nicest couple. God I miss that community, I give much love to all the deadheads still out there that still love to dance and commune as family. I love you guys.

I am not a Vince hater..... loved him in the Tubes.... and his keyboard skills fine..... That said, I was not a fan of his tunes, though I wonder what the boys could have done with Samba circa 1976 through 1979 given what they were doing with Dancin' in the Streets.... but I digress..... all the midi stuff drove me insane. Much of my love for the Dead came from their pure sound..... every instrument in the mix.... no fuzz.... no effects [other than during feedback and space].... Maybe if just Jerry or Bobby was assaulting us with the midi effects.... And I'm not a "this is the best era" or everything after 'x' year sucked guy..... I have found flashes of brilliance in almost every show [though there are a couple from 1994 and 1995 that are just plain ugly - - and the two coming to mind are both from Giants Stadium].... Do I have favorite years? Sure..... big fan of Feb through July 1969,,,, and Feb through June 1971..... but on any given day, 1983 could be my favorite year.... or 1992..... depends on my mood. Anyway..... not a bad show at all.... wasn't there, so no rating. But if I were to rate it LOL!!!

My first show and it was a great one! I think 91 was the last consistently solid year for the Dead. The following year was an even better show on 6/28/92 (best first set I ever saw live), but sadly it was more miss than hit from 92-95 until Jerry passed away.

The highlight of this show was the second set. From the energy of the Scarlet>Fire, to the soulful vocals at the end of SOTM and a smoking SSDD with each separate player joining Jerry on each re-visited ending rhythm. The Weight wasn't what I would have chosen to end the heart-lifting 2nd set closer. I guess it gave sellers an opportunity to go get set up to beat the crowds.

VG show but....
Hornsby is an excellent player, a great addition to the team, and there are many shows from this period where everything lines up just right. But he is wise enough to assess after the fact and, I think, listening back to this one (and a few others like it) he'd probably be the first to say 'oops', that he was overrunning the music a bit on this show, especially set one.
He's very aggressive, non-stop, and fills the spaces normally left for well-established riffs and in most cases is wiping out Garcia, rendering mute the riffs and melody lines that we all know and love and forcing Weir to have to state his case loudly if Weir's comping is to be heard at all. And in some cases Hornsby simply doesn't know the tunes well enough to be so bold.
Though all with good intentions (and approval by a bit too deferential Garcia) there's a bit too much athleticism and not enough 'team' attitude.
Set 2 evens out a bit, but set 1 especially could use more willingness from Hornsby to be another gear on the machine and not just 'the man'.....

Listen folks times change and we need to. This is a very cool show. The boys have traveled long and hard so its hard to rock out with your cock out in the middle of indi state. dont forget 2 years before they searched cars for ticket holders. Not a really a comfy vibe.

I never quite knew why I didn't like most post Brent shows as well. Now I have it nailed. There's just too much going on. I wish they would have forgot about Vince and kept Hornsby as full time pianist. Nothing against Vince. He came into the band unfamiliar with thier music. I remember reading an interview with him shortly after he joined the band. He said he had one month to learn one hundred ninety five songs most of which he had never heard. You had Bob and Jerry using midi effects like crazy so I just think it would have sounded less cluttered without the extra keyboards. This is a good show and an ok sbd but the Miller version sounds better to me. If you are into 90's shows get 6-9-91 , 3-24-93, and 3-21-94. They are great. Don't get me wrong I'm not one of those haters who say they were no good after such and such year. I just find I like more shows before this era. Sorry for being long winded.

This was my first outdoor summer concert. My first was going to be the year before at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, but unfortunately, I got busted in the lot an hour before showtime and spent the whole summer in county jail. BUMMER!! Crazy experience...bunch of heads got pinched that show so there were a few of us incarcerated for the rest of tour. Spent the next few months on probation then went to this show the following summer. Didn't have tickets and was just about to give up looking when my friend who I was with when I got busted came running up with my miracle ticket! Went in just as they started and got to party with my firends who took my van on the rest of tour the previous year. Great show, Great memories. Kept my treats to myself and close friends from then on...

i have heard a few shows from the 80's that seemed pretty good, but when i leave them and come back, it is never like going back the early ones. They don't have the pop. I know i'm picky, but like i said below, only a rare non-deadhead who would like many shows much past 1980

Simply put:This is the best played second set i have ever attended in 300 plus shows....The scarlet/fire/truckin/speedway and standing are immpeccable.Even trucking was good.If your a fan of the "weight"this one is tits.Good recording. If you dont take weird sets and breakout songs into consideration, this might be the best played 2nd set of all post Brent. The Bruce/Jerry showdown between the 2nd and 3rd verses of Fire is amazing.Best Scarlet fire of the 90s hands down."Be with you" part of Standing Jerry goes off more than i've ever heard him do,Kinda like on "stella blue"8/1/94.Killer sugar mag.Again,i cant say enough about the WHOLE Scarlet/Fire,Including the transition.Has been for about 10 years and continues to be my favorite CD.

Scarlet->Fire? Has anyone actually listened to it? (If you were there and had a religious experience that's a special case.)
This show has some great moments and some pretty lame moments. Jerry's voice is feeble but he makes a noble effort.
My big question: Bob's verse in The Weight- what the hell was he thinking?

Where to start......that night was just magical - my wife and I seemed to be surrounded by a glow. SOTM is our song and when Jerry popped it out, we were ecstatic. It just topped off a ragin night. During a time when things were starting to take the long slow ride downhill, my sugar mag and I just couldnt get over how magical, and how happy we were that night. The music rocked, the scene was still lovely and the stars were just a tad brighter that night.
Btw we are still together, and still talk about that show - a standout among the many, many shows we saw together.

Both nights onf this run were good. I especially liked this 2nd set, as the Fire is very strong with Bruce, who sparkles throughout the night. The New Speedway is also well played with Vince nailing a Sax sound as they "spend a little time on the MOUN-TAIN"... Standing on the Moon is also a nice version, Jerry giving it his all

My first show, and as you can imagine it will always hold a special spot. That said, this is a great show, not for the novelty of the my first, but for the way the boys played with a lift and expression. The plants aligned that day/evening as did the band. Bruce really looked as if He was fitting in and certainly played that way. Eric and I opened a door that will never close, and I thank life for that opportunity.
Enjoy the show

This show is a must have if only for the beauty of this Scarlet >Fire. Bruce and Jerry were really in sync and loving life on that jam. Bobby throws some slinky fills in as well. Well worth a listen. It floored me at the show. One of my favorite shows that I attended (out of 39). After space, Vince and Bruce traded spots for one tune. Great 2 night run. I would take the 1st set from the 6-6-91 and the 6-7-91 as the better of the 4 sets. Thanks for the uploads.
