The only issue that could be a problem in 73 is sound or missing tunes and this recording does not suffer from either.
I had never heard this before so it was a nice treat. 1st set is jumbo size and I would be in the camp that digs the Here Comes Sunshine!
The band sounds into it and I really like how Jerry puts some extra giddy up into his lyrics.
The 2nd set is trippy. i was cleaning out my shed and the work was way smoother with the Other One infused throughout the set.
The GDTRFB has Donna coming in loud and clear...

Just something about these fall/late fall 73 shows that just turn me into mush. I guess it's all because this first shows I was given to listen to was a Dicks PICKS 14 which is from the Boston Music Garden Nov and Dec 73. I was always love fall 73

Really terribly pitch shifted. This show (and so much of 73 on archive) really deserves to be corrected and re-upped. The entire recording is almost a full half-step sharp. If you're jamming along, or have perfect pitch, it's incredibly distracting.

SICK China>Rider - one of my all-time favorites if you live this combo u have to hear this one. Also the Other One sandwich in set 2 is amazing and just as brilliant as the PITB sandwich on 11/20. In particular I LOVE the transition from TOO into Eyes, and what a Eyes it is. Not just a typical '73 version - this is played with that '74 energy and gusto - complete with sick Phil runs towards the end, as every good late '73-'74 Eyes should have.
Also I agree this HCS is good but not great. The version from 3 nights later on 11/17 at UCLA is a mindblower though!

I am loving this show for the most part but Here Comes Sunshine is one of my favorite tunes and this one is sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.... if you want a good one try this one ...
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1973-12-06.sbd.remaster.102750.flac16 ... the spectrum show from 9-21-73 also has a great version.
all that being said...this show is still well worth a listen for sure as all '73 shows pretty much are

One of the worst venues in San Diego and one of the best Dead shows I have ever heard. For all of those folks who say this is the best HCS, it is. I don't know what Donna was doing that night but it was absolutley heavenly. We all knew it at the time, we were transfixed by her performance. Just beautiful.

Subject: way underrated classic show
as Dr. Flashback says, this show is overshadowed by two of the biggest shows of the year, but it shouldn't be. this is just about as good imho. of course there are a few flubs like almost any show, but otherwise the performances are nearly flawless, and full of that tasty '73 jamming, especially the truckin>TOO>big river>TOO>eyes>TOO>wharf sequence, which is of course the main highlight. it is a really interesting medley, though some of the transitions (like into big river and eyes) are rather abrupt. the eyes is really unique b/c it is the only one i know of before '75 that does not contain the slipknot, or stronger than dirt, or whatever you want to call it, minor key thing. billy throws some neat tempo changes into the back beat during the verses, and there's a great phil solo during the outro, which is nice since its usually something he seemed to do more in the '74 versions.
other highlights include a GREAT HCS, china>rider (as usual - is there really a bad one in '73!?) and a sweet cumberland. november is definitely the place to start in this year

all three Winterland shows plus san diego, UCLA, and the two in Denver....all just fantastic.
FYI--the Winterland shows offered by the Dead site are well worth the money..IMO, the recordings are near perfect and the shows are just blissful and beautiful and you feel like you can listen forever to them.
4 stars for this one because i cannot see giving 5 for everyone and i am reserving my 5 star for my one personal favorite which i will search for all my days.

This is the best HCSS ever period, no argument, hands down, titty bongos(IMO). I have listen to all the HCSS available in good sound and this is it. 12/19/73 is good but the boys blow this one out. Cumberland is a ripper. Well talk is cheap. This is the best 73 show. You can comment on my opinion when you have heard it say 500 times all the way through as I have(no bullshit). GET THIS SHOW you wont be let down.

Just for the super silky smooth Here Comes Sunshine. The vocals in HCS are spot on, and I oftentimes get annoyed that the harmonies are out of pitch or lagging in tempo, but the boys nailed it this night. And the jam sequence is jazzy and laid back. Listen to Bill on the drums, super slow and restrained in the first few minutes with low toms and snare, then starts to put it into high gear as the jam builds splashing the cymbals and using cyncopated rhythms on the snare. Great interplay between Keith and Bobby, feeding off of each other, and then Jerry really coming in on top of them at his own speed. Of course Phil keeps a solid foundation.
Wish I was there!

This show is excellent. All around rating, 5-stars... the band was tight, good energy and upbeat, vocals are nice and clear, great sound quality, Keith is at his best, and Jerry plays some interesting and lovely melodic riffs throughout... that I thought were a bit spunky... like in Sugaree and Tennessee Jed.
I've listened to many of the late '72 to late '73 shows here on the LMA... not all. This show is a gem. I discovered it purely by chance, and a bit of good effort by all. I went to about 25 Dead concerts during this period, on the east coast. I think this show is rated way under the radar, my deadhead friends. It's excellent throughout.
I just met this great lady my age. She only saw the Dead a couple of times, many years ago. I'm setting her up now... so that she can listen to the Dead, here on the LMA. She wanted me to recommend one show to listen to now... so she could hear them again, for the first time in years. Believe it or not, I recommended this show. It epitomizes the best of the Dead in this era.

This was my 3rd Dead show ever. I had seen them at Dillon with the ABB in 72, and at Watkins Glenn. I caught this show and then the one they did in Tempe, AZ on 11/25 (it was Thanksgiving time, and though you don't hear about it much, I thought it was an awesome show). What a (wall of) sound they had this year!
I remember this night as a lonnnnnng one. Yes, the TOO triple-decker was something else.
Oh hell, I wish I was 18 again. And it was 1973.

Makes sense that the boys were off their faces tonight since they appear to exhibit in the second set that subtle fingers-on-a-hand effect that characterized so many of their peak late 60's performances (St. Valentines Day at the Carousel stands out). The Sunshine in the first set is dripping with goo. GOO!
Let's be honest, folks. The fall of '73 is the bomb shit. I think it's fucked up and inhumane that the Archive removed many of the soundboards from this tour (pending another Dick's Picks or Vault release perhaps?).
Anyway, if you like 'em mellow, this one is a must.

The reason Phil sat in a chair, or a footrest was more like it, was the because the band had tripped the night fantastic before and at the intermission. The fact they tossed out 16 songs in the first set was the result of some toasty pre show activities. Not to mention a 90 minute jam to open the 2nd set with 3 Other Ones. Not a show ever played had 3 Other Ones that I can recall. Add on another 3 songs and you had one incredible evening. I know the Dark Star on 11/11 at Winterland was vintage Dead and the long Playing/Uncle John's/Morning Dew jam at Pauley on 11/17 was quite festive; but for me, the night belonged to the Dead and they played very inspired that evening. The fans realized this when the first set took nearly 2 hours to play. Oh, as far as the chair was concerned, I think Phil was just a tad too inibriated to stand for the 90 minute jam to open set 2.

THIS SHOW IS FUNKY, GET IT, FOOL. although bobby's voice is a little on the horrible side tonight... ha... he and jer still have a fat jam session. phil cracks the concrete foundation of the house in set I then burns down the rest in set II... that is, assuming YOU can hear him. The common formula for a 73' show was followed here and it worked well. hctss and the cowboy tunes ARE skippable by all means... the cumberland was a swell treat, but it has seen better days. I absolutley love 73 thats why im trying to mention the bad parts of the show, cos the YOU KNOW with a second set like this... the show is gonna be a full of facemelters. sound not perfect... some "warm up" versions in set I... STILL worth the download, if only for the fat set II jams.

If you want to hear the best live version of Here Comes Sunshine this show is a must, also an amazing early Row Jimmy, a body swaying Brown Eyed Women (one of my favorite dead songs ever), and impressive China Cat Sunflower Jam into I know you rider (classic), then an end to the first set with a first-class Around And Around, showing why Bobby rocks. As for the second set all I need to say is it contains a triple Decker Other One sandwich with two excellent versions of Big River and Eyes Of The World squeezed in between. Just tonight I was in the mood to listen to a nice long jam out of Truckin' from 1973 because I got tired after listening to my collection of primal '67 and '68 Dead all weekend. Well this 69 minute Truckin thru Wharf Rat sure didn't disappoint. I had never heard this show before and knew very little about it and I've been collecting shows for 10 years. Why? Because it's literally surrounded by two stellar shows, 11/11 and 11/17. I'd have to say that this is one of the great overlooked performances, much like 5/11/72 overshadows the superb 5/10/72 (is it a coincidence that this and 5/10 feature great versions of the Other One).
I'd say this gets 5 stars for the third disc alone, and the sound quality is phoenominal, every little detail (from Bill's crash cymbal to Phil's low E string) crystal clear. Definitely get it now.

Originally I gave this five stars -- but that was a year ago before the full smorgasboard alluded to by the good doctor was laid on the table. Thus I defer to his observation and revise downward. Still a more than adequate snack, tho...
Crispy first set with a shimmering Sunshine & fluid China/Rider, the latter separated by sweet interstitial marmelade jam. Starts tight and stays tight throughout.
Second set Other One excursion a most worthwhile journey. Agreed, not on the melodic side -- but The Other One rarely is, and this surging jam ebbs and flows tightly in and out of Big River, a luscious Eyes, to dock smoothly at the Wharf. This ain't everyday noodlin', kids, but a fat sandwich with all the sides AND a bag o' chips.
Sound quality is stellar, with bass and keys exceptionally well defined; in fact, the mix is so good I doubt they would bother to clean it up for an official release, since it's so close already. Don't go hungry -- this download will take care of those munchies pronto.

In any other year, this could be one of the top shows. Unfortunately, it's heavily overshadowed by the giant that preceeds it, 11/11, and the masterpiece of 11/17 that follows. But don't overlook this little magic mushroom. Energetic versions of Cumberland, China>Rider and HC Sunshine stand out. And while the Other One may not travel anywhere particularly new, it definitely satisfies your jam needs. Sometimes you buy the less expensive wine, this is that show. But the vintage is still a very magical year.

Not the best set list imho. Most of the songs are great, but a lot of the jamming on disc 2 on and around The Other One is pretty bad I think. It's mostly that chaotic lack-of-melody style that lets down what could be lovely long jams around '73-'74. The Other One is all instrumental which is a pity because it has great verses.
The 3 I give this show is in relation to other GRATEFUL DEAD shows. So its a pretty damn good listen as a whole, but there's loads of better stuff out there.
