A tremendous show!
The first set has great moments, but, that second set is incredibly consistent, packing some of the best high-energy jams of the year.
I attended this show, and it was on a Friday night. My buddy Paul picked me up near my school and drove us there. He played me the 7.29.88 China>Crazy>Rider>Playin' on the way over. I attended sober, but Paul loaded a bowl in his pipe for me on the way home and I heard the 8.1.73 Dark Star or the first time, which was really quite something.
As for the show, the music speaks for itself. The first set had military planes in their landing pattern flying right over the amphitheater. The volume went from too quiet to blasting in a matter of seconds during Walkin' Blues, with Phil's bass the last part of the mix to enter the territory.
First set wasn't as memorable, in that Desolation Row and Cold Rain and Snow seemed to have a bit of feedback issues, but there was still some good music.
Nonetheless, second set featured wall-of-sound crescendos, one more high-energy than the next. Foolish was huge, Saint even better. Crazy Fingers set the pace and provided a launchpad into Truckin', which exploded into one of the best peaks I ever attended. The whole band climaxed hard! I was stoked for my first Speedway, but was underwhelmed by the energy after that Truckin' jam. The recording here shows that the Speedway was actually first rate, and the jam following the song would probably be called "type II" in today's vernacular.
For drums, Billy was at it alone for quite a while, and I never seen him play more ferociously than he did that night.
I recall Wheel>Watchtower being jammed more than usual, and I was excited by the fact that I couldn't pin-point the moment the Wheel ends and Watchtower begins. It's more clear on this recording, although it is undoubtedly sublime.
Black Peter was well jammed, and Sugar Magnolia and the encore were all excellent.
The post drums has a lot of clipping in this recording, and I'm demoting a star on this fact. Nonetheless, I thought the band's playing this night was the best of the run, although the mother's day show had the best setlist and longer jams. If I'd been there, I'd probably have called it the best night.
I would like to hear an audience source of this night. It's an over-the-top impassioned performance, and I'd like to hear that crowd roar uncontrollably to that Truckin' jam once again.
Predrums of this show will not waste your time. You can count on that!

What day is it ?
Hey, if youre going to write a review and you happen to know what day it was (mon. tues. etc.), performed. I find myself looking for particular songs played (sampson,
sat.nite etc.), then put some fuzzy math together along with two eggs and hashbrowns to figure out what day the show was on. For some reason I am particularly (particularoley ?) interested in what specific day the show was performed. If you were there, or happen to be an expert on being "there", in the futuristic world of show reviews, say what day the fucking show was on.
Specifically Yours,

great show
These spring/summer shows from 91 are really really good. Especially this one. They sound like they had a boost of energy from Hornsby. In my opinion he's the reason the band sounds so good and the reason the recordings themselves sound so good. Theres a few shows from 91 without him and you can hear the difference. Vince was good for adding fills an accents but Hornsby just had these songs DOWN. The Dead had such a colorful sound during this period. It seems like Vince didn't really get these songs down good until 92 (another somewhat underrated year filled with a bunch of good shows...12/16/92-DP27 for example). I guess you can argue there were a couple songs in the bands repertoire where Vince and Hornsby didn't mesh but for the most part they sound great together, especially when everything is mixed properly.
...and all the instruments are mixed perfect for the my taste. Vince isn't too loud and Hornsby has just enough volume so you can hear all his sweet licks. Phil's bass sounds really good, especially in Cold Rain (which has a tiny cut in the beginning but isn't that bad) Both sets are equally good. I think I might actually like the first set better though.
First set favs:
Jack Straw
They Love Each Other (A+)
Stagger Lee
Cold Rain & Snow
Desolation Row (A+)
Cold Rain and Desolation Row is the real highlight for me
Second Set favs: (guess these are obvious)
Crazy Fingers >
Truckin >
New Speedway

Just heard this show on Sirrius and was simply spellbound. What a show. Saw many back in that tour but you can hear how great Jerry is feeling. Love Hornsby on the keys. Jerry loved playing with him.
Anyway, noone has a copy to upload? Anything we can do to get a copy on here to share?

My 18th Birthday Show
I'm revising this review many years later. What's weird is my 18th birthday was this shoreline show, 18 years later the dead are playing Shoreline again on my birthday. Fun.
GDTS hooked us up with low 103's (Row C Seat 5 is what I have on my stub) for this show. It was an epic birthday present. The band did not disappoint. All of Spring '91 is great, but this is one of my favorite runs. Ah, Spring in California!
The Desolation is my first set highlight. All 5 tunes before drums seem to build on one another. The post space sequence is done beautifully.
Jerry and Bruce's musical love affair is at a peak here. The interplay between them still make me get up out of my chair and move.

trivial pursuit..........
In the book "Dark Star" by Robert Greenfield, on pg. 268 there is a "clue" as to why this might be such a fantastic second set.......the Band really took off from the late April Vegas shows through the rest of the spring and summer in 1991. Some incredible sets, show, after show. The New Speedway was such a hoped for pre-show rumor in the lots since February/Oakland.

vince = strong
great jerry vocals
bob's fired up ...
TLEO -- wow.
Maggies hops -- way much fun...
Phil takes over a special Foolish Heart.
Fingers is ALWAYS best in person but drop into Truckin > new speedway is a way smile maker - powerful, special.
Wheel is what it is - real nice back jam, though...Black pete after Watchtower almost floats - rushed, yes - but great keys -- great jam. divin' out of it...AWESOME.

I guess if enough reviewers mention enough diffrent songs it has to be a 5.
What came to be a "Head for the cooler in the care, They're playin' out the string" song on many nights really rips on this one. And all that about Truckin and such is true too.

If you're one of those people who love the drums-space segments of a Dead show, this is one of the best I've heard in a while. The sound quality is suberb as well, with some real nice mixing. Jerry is at his finest, and Phil realy drops some solid bass lines. Drums-Space-Wheel is just killer!

one of the best of the era
it's hard for me to compare '91 to '87, '76 or '72 - but for the era, this is a great one. the vocals are solid, and the playing is excellent. by the end jack straw, the board mix gets real solid and lush, and the music is just excellent. i never liked the reason for *why* hornsby was in the band, but it's hard to critique his contributions.

Rare nineties goodness
This has always been my favorite tape of the nineties - thanks to
archive.org for enabling the digital magic. I don't think that I was at this show, but it's a little hazy ... but ... Hornsby and Garcia have some great chemistry. The second set - from the end of Foolish Heart to Drums especially - is full of heroics. They pulled New Speedway out of the vault just prior to this run, and while you can't tell on this soundboard, the crowd nearly faints. Garcia's work after Truckin and in the middle of St-o-Circumstance is full-on rawk-god material.
