At 3:30 you can here others pitch in, then after, there are mountain vereses ive never heard before and Bobby gets right into it.

Two real all time contenders here. Bob swings and grooves LLR and finally puts his foot down w the “rain rain go away...” line. This one is exceptional from start to finish.

And Bob gets big credit for stringing out the China Cat. Jerry gives him the all clear to the open key patented rhythm but instead Bob comes down w hard chords and a vicious cross mash up, one more time around that has Phil thumping in, and Jerry just nailing it to the wall.

No one is going to comment on Bobby bawling his eyes out on the best looks like rain of all time?

Not much else can be said that has already been said. I was lucky to be at both these shows and the 86 Frost's. These 82 ones are definitely in the tops of my show history. These and 82 Ventura were epic venues and music. Can't wait till they invent that time machine. This will be on the itinerary. Ventura was a fave venue with Frost second and the Greek third. ICC in Berlin wasn't to shabby either.

My first show. Dancing with eyes closed. Had just joined the Navy. Opened eyes during lost sailor and noticed I was making a long tall dust cloud and was quite isolated. Felt awkward for a moment and then noticed kind smiles. Found a grassy spot and continued to dance. I never felt so much a part of music in my life. Still think this was a magical show. I'm not a Bobby guy, but his songs were so great this day: Cassidy, LL Rain, LS>St Circ, Throwing Stones, NFA... all of them. Cassidy, Tennessee Jed, LS>St Circ, Throwing Stones, Far from Me and Baby Blue rank #1 all-time version in Headyversion voting and LL Rain is #2 all time. Satisfaction is 3rd (behind the encore version that probably, over 100 degrees, put Jerry in a coma). Rumor is Bobby just had a break-up. The sound there was incredible, even from outside, where I was the day before. Phil's bass sounds amazing and Jerry is fluid as a watery jaguar. This is one of the great shows. Try the Rango matrix (Seaman's) too, because his AUD tape blends great w the SBD and the crowd vibe is great. This show is an example of why Phil talks so fondly of the 80s. His playing is worth a close listen throughout.

Great show! Unfortunately, the recording plays back a little fast. I discovered this when I tuned up my guitar to play along with the amazing Cassidy jam, only to find out that I was not in tune with the recording! I wondered if the boys were tuning to some standard other than 440 Hz, so I checked a different version (https://archive.org/details/gd1982-10-10.sonyecm220T.keshavan.miller.93733.sbeok.flac24). Lo and behold, I was perfectly in tune with that one. Note also that the song lengths are greater in the second version I tried (e.g. Little Red Rooster is a full minute longer) confirming the speed issue. Accordingly, the first version sounds a little like helium was added to the list of inhalants. Recording still gets four stars!

And I have to say this Sugaree is sooo damn sweet.... Was only born in 1987 so I missed Jerry by seven years because my first show was Phil and Friends Summer 2002 Hershey park and I've been on the bus ever since

I'm picky when it comes to 80's shows, I'm still relatively new anything post 78', with the exception of some 80 & 89 shows. This show really deepened my appreciation for early 80's dead, I think it's a hell of a lot better than the previous night. LLR-Touch is excellent. I'd also recommend 8-3-82.

I'd rate the playing of this show 4.8/5 in the context of 1982. & 4.2/5 based on all years

This show (ive listened to the last few days) is packed with my kinda tunes-bobby tunes! sugar mag> ssdd is chilling. So is the Sailor> Saint...........just wtF u gonna do Now????! Probably listen to a new goody, as recommended by HeadyVersion.

Totally locked in, like its their favorite day ever. Multiple F bombs from bobby, rock star Jerry, Phil laying wood left and right - what more can you ask for?

Get the matrix of this show and listen on some quality headphones. It just sparkles from end to end.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT SHOW

Listened to this today at work and it is very nice. Really fun to listen to Sugaree, LLR , Lost Sailor Saint, The Wheel Black Peter and an early T-Stones just really good stuff.

Good show IMO. Good recording too. Plenty of Phil.

This is one heck of a show; so strong, I don't know what to mention first....quite possibly the best-ever versions of Sailor>Saint and Far From Me, and also among the best-ever versions of Crazy Fingers, Loser...the LL Rain is also kickin...you know, basically the whole thing rocks.

..and above average. Even for '82, which was a very good year imho. China>Rider is very good, and Playin' is cool, complete with some very Supplicationesque volleys from Jerry late in the game. Crazy Fingers is a very good '80s version. Sailor>Saint is classic Bob cheese, but with some wonderful playin by the boyz. Love it!

i had a real sweet audience tape of this with real swishy and echo-y hi-hat(s)... superb to hear a SB version of this show.. a must-have for any Brent-era enthusiast... the segues are all seemless and brilliant, they basically don't stop playing the entire 2nd set!

i think this show and St. Paul 8-6-82(?) are my two favorite 82 shows...

this is 5-star territory.

Best ever...name a better one. Jerry strumming the hell out of that guitar, great harmonies, sick-o solo. Smokin' - this one deserves some respect.

I will never forget this concert. I moved to Palo Alto one week earlier form back east. I couldn't believe the melow/beautiful atmosphere. The boys seemed to be so much happier to play here than anywhere else I've seen. I never felt so relaxed at a show. And the music! Wow!! Garcia was melting my heart and my brain and my soul with every note. Bob and Brent were messing with my head real bad durring Red Rooster. Was I just hearing/seeing things, (yes). I guess I was overthinking their antics. Just messin' with me I tell you.

Some shows just get you going. I know there are "greater" dead shows than this, but I love this one for many reasons. Diamond in the rough. Probably not as highly regarded as the other frost shows of this run, but check it out.

revise: to Bonk...concur about the LLR. Tied for my fav all time with hartford 4/88.

also, many stake claim to the Dean smith center show in 93 having the best Fingers. I say it's right here. Don't know if they ever segued into Sailor from fingers before but the journey is sweet

this particular china > rider gets as much play in my spinner as any combo they played. half the band (phil/drums) is into rider while the other half is still in china cat(jerry/brent/bobby)....listen closely. incredible seamless transition...the bass absolutely pumps!!!!

5 stars for that duo alone. not to mention the rest of the show is sick....

This show was in my home area, but alas, it was right after I stopped attending GD concerts. This recording is splendid, I mean, divine. I think I must boldly proclaim that this is one of the best recordings commercial, or not, that I have ever heard. The Grateful Dead come roaring out of the starting gate and keep it up all day. Now, don't get me wrong, his may not be a dazzling overall show, performance wise, but it sounds so good you don't care. Many have said the previous day was a better show by virtue of song selection, but I may disagree. First set is very well done, but the second set is simply jaw-dropping. The Playing>Fingers>Sailor>Saint>Touch>Drumz>Wheel is absolutely stellar. Now, I am not a big Touch head, mind ya, but this one will stunt your growth and even the NFA, which is one of my least favorites due to its beat annoying me, is a torch carrier which keeps the remaining portion of set 2 volcanic. Of course, due to fact that I stopped going I never heard them perform Crazy Fingers or Satisfaction live, but this recording makes up for times missed.

In my opinon just may be one of the best sounding shows from the early eighties. The mix is just perfect through out the entire show. Unfortunately "Space" is missing but, other than that this show is on Fire ! In no way does the band go through the motions on this night. Upon listening you can hear how each member is pushing the other to higher and higher levels. Satisfaction is a great reflection of this. This is a prime example of what made the Grateful Dead so good. So if you don't have it get it enjoy it and tell your friends ! On a side not not that it even matters what I think but, I have never given a show 5 stars before.

These were a great couple of shows in Palo Alto. Personally I liked the first show a little better because of song selection, but the execution of this show is impeccable, no warts here. I know there is a more complete copy of this show out there. I was there, from Boulder, Co., with my buddy Mike Gardner who had a cast on his leg and we smuggled the mics in his cast and used the crutches for mic stands. I have, over the years lost my copy and lost touch with Mike. (If you're out there, Mike, upload both these shows please, and look me up in SLC, Ut., Frank)

2nd set was the first live show I ever heard on tape and I still regard it as the "classic live Dead" sound. This set has such an eerie feeling to it, but maybe its just the tape? Don't think so. Jerry is extremely lucid, especially on the Playin' Jam/Crazy Fingers. I love the way Jerry leads the band through the Playin' Jam, you can hear Bob and Brent trying to keep up with his melodies and having trouble. Phil has no trouble on this night. Wish I had a time machine for this one.

I dont think i've ever said too much about best ever because there are simply too many yet this China/Rider excells further than most i've ever heard. A very odd sounding and strong 1st set. Organic. The Sugaree has character and personality all it's own. This Looks like rain is breath taking. Could be my favorite next to Greek 89. It sounds muddy in all kinds of places but it's a very good sounding recording I think, it holds up and more, a thick bottom end. All sources of this show have the same after effect from what iv'e heard. It could have been the mix that day,the acustics or maybe the master tape is lost and a flawed and very good 2nd gen recording has been floating around all these years. Playin jam is alot of fun. but I like the lst set much better.3.5 for sound 4 for playing and 5 for many of the song versions. I think Frost 82 is due for a clean-up and major release on cd. How bout it guys. 9/9/82? I know fans talk about that show as much as any,at least for the 80's allright.

Should be noted that this show contains two of the best encores you'll ever hear (never a Dead strong point)...The Satisfaction is intense as all get-out and Bobby just rants and rants--including the scatting listed above in title of this review...he's having way too much fun but pulling off a really great version of the Stones standard...then Jerry comes on w/a Baby Blue that's both heartfelt and well-belted vocally...very strong encore stuff!

I used to have Auds of this show. It was the only 82 show I had 10 years ago. It was a pleasure to relisten, it really is a good show..I really miss the Aud source. They were the best auds I owned. They really captured the ambience and friendliness of the frost. Satisfaction was made even better with the audience singing along with Bobby ( no doubt consoling him over the loss of his girliefriend) I miss the Auds.

It would be a glaring omission if no mention is made of the Tennessee Jed. It is really near album perfection. My personal favorite version of T-Jed (over 11-25-1979). Looks Like Rain is dead on and the Far From Me is the best version of this tune. In fact the whole show is pretty f*cking tight...

The boys were on this night.The LLR is THE BEST VERSION I HAVE HEARD. I read that Bobs girl just left him a few days before this show.Listen to the end section where does him"speil" and listen carefully...very emotional!!

this show is killer!!! It has my favorite looks like rain where bobby starts ad libbing lyrics and swearing and generally going nuts.....same with the sailor>saint... ad libbing going ballistic!! This is one of my favoritee 80's dead shows... Do yourself a favor and get this now!!!

This show is on the top of people's lists of favorite shows (especially for 82) for good reason. The first set songs at the end of the set which once occupied the b-side (remember XL II-s) and had garcia solos that were dead on perfect one song after the other. The fact that they were some of my favorite song solos for him to play made it all the better. I'm talking about his solos on Far from me, then Loser, then Looks, then Rider. Front to back, one of the best first sets of the year and top twenty of the decade. The second set features my favorite sailor (for those of us who love this song) and one of the most furious solos garcia ever took part in-- at the end of saint. This one is my favorite show from one of my favorite years and one that should be had by anyone who likes the 80s.

Hey, I really like this show. Maybe not the absolute best, but wow ... this is a great show. 1st set is killer and the second set is great too.

Compared to later shows, the voices are prime, and Jerry's playing is excellent. The sound quality for this show is great too. I can understand why so many feel this is a diamond in the rough. One of the best Dead shows I've heard.

.....I must admit that I agree with everything you just wrote about the 1st set of this show but I'm trying to figure out if you were in the parking lot or got booted out of the show for the 2nd set......anytime the band decided to open a 2nd set with "Playing in the Band" they meant business. This version of "Crazy Fingers" is the best played of the 1982 versions.....I'm not going to go through every song but by the time they get to "Sugar Magnolia", Phil is dropping bombs left and right and the band is in high gear.
.....I don't know, I think it's pretty amazing music.

This is one of the best first sets out there and my favorite first set of 82. They really bring it. The Minglewood opener is my favorite all time. Its vicious. Jerry, Brent, Phil, the Devils are just on fire, and of course there is Bobby with that 82 voice that I love. Ripping solos by Jerry, Brent, and even Bobby on the slide. Phil is booming all over the place. Into Sugaree. Oh man a thick groove. Jerry sounds like an angel. Again Jerry shreds all the solos. This is a real head banging version. Into Rooster. This is a delicious Rooster. Incredible intro with Phil adding some grate bass. Again Bobby brings it vocally. Jerry takes a big turn, followed by a grate solo by Bobby. What makes this one of my favorite Roosters is Brent singing, "Hey Little Red Rooster well you aint shit to me." His voice just sounds so raw and dirty its awesome. Then he rips it up on the B3. They come to the first stop and go into a groovy Jed. Very nice. Im not the biggest fan of Cassidy, cuz imo it can sometimes suck the life out of a set, but this is a grate version. Nice and tight and the Jerry and the Boys are just unconscious on the jam. Cassidy could have been a second set song, if they had just turned the corner on the jam. HEAVY Loser. Jerry rips a phat one and heartfelt vocals. Followed by the best Far From Me Ive heard. Brent's voice is perfect on this one. Jerry has some nice runs on this one. Ethereal Looks Like Rain. Emotional heartfelt singing by Bobby. Searing solo by Jerry. The coda is awesome. Into a funky bouncy China Cat. Jerry is again on fire with some very slick runs. Into a ripping Rider. Wow!!

IMHO the second set is a huge let down from the first set, but maybe they just blew their load on the first set. No complaints from me. I love those tight 82 shows. The Boys are in fine form for this smoker. Get the first set if you wanna hear some smoking Dead. Im gonna make believe the second set doesnt exist and give this one five stars for the first set.

I was excited when I saw that a soundboard of this show had been added to the archive, but extremely disappointed when I discovered that it is missing 'Space', along with Garcia's beautiful extended intro to 'The Wheel'. Don't get me wrong; this is a fine sounding version of an amazing show and would easily rate 5 stars if complete.

This omission is much more substantial than the tape flip mentioned in the notes. Is a file missing, perhaps? If anyone can provide a complete version of this show it would be a valuable addition to the archive.
