I love Philthy and there's no place like home. The sound is pretty good for this solid show. Listen to how trippy the Row Jimmy is with a wonderful L>S>D to end the 1st set. The interesting opening of the 2nd set with post 1980 1st set songs is very interesting to say the least. Give this one a whirl! Forever Grateful > Forever Dead 💓 Lifer

Let's put it this way: If I were stuck on a desert island and could have only one Dead show, this one wouldn't be my first choice, but if it were the only one available, I would be perfectly happy.
This is as good as show as any from the overall strong year of 1980. It rocks form start to end. The jam between He's Gone and The Other One is quintessential Dead. There's also an epic version of GDTRFB.

In another example of the experimentation with set lists that occured during this period, a Greatest Sory second set opener. For three shows in close proximity, it is the opener. Every other time it is played in thesecond set, which isn't often, it is paired - usually with Alabama or Bertha.

I generally don't get that into Drums/Space, because to me it is more of a visual thing to watch them do what they do, but this Space>Wharf Rat was freakin' awesome.

Subject: About that Philly thing

I saw 40 shows in aisle that went down from the press box seats on Jerry's side (later days). Ans some nights (Not too many)the parking lot was better than the music inside.
Philly is known more for booing. But it's because we boo when booing is deserved. I saw Sam and Dave get booed off that stage for trying to mail it in. Other bands put on a bogus show and get nothing back. You couldn't pass that stuff off on a philly crowd.
But when bands got it right, there were few places where the crowd was as appreciative.
A smart band-like the grateful dead knew this wasn't a bunch of lemmings going nuts. everything you read is about here love affair with their crowd.
That and having FDR field wide open for one of the best inner city parking areas for 4 days around a 3 night stop didn't hurt either.
It was a greeat scene.

Why can't all early 80's boards sound as good as this recording? The mix is great with Phil prominent throughout the show. I thoroughly enjoyed both sets. The whole band is high energy and it shows in their singing and playing. I have always been amazed at how well the boys played at the Spectrum. I don't know if it is because the crowd is super amped or the acoustics are good or a combination of factors....... If I had to pick a favorite slice of music from this show it would have to be Jerry going off big time on Wharf Rat and GDTRFB. Check it out!

How many times did it get solo second set play. A few scattered shows, not only is the placement note-able, but the actual power in this night rendition is through the roof.
One of the better early 80s Let It Grows.

Subject: Front row for this show
Through a contact of my dad's, I got section 102, row 1 seats 10-11. Took my girl and during the first set she needed to go to the bathroom and wanted me to come with her. I had never been that close, so I begged off and she never made it back up front. Remember Lost Sailor/St. being off the wall. Great second set as well. Young guy that made it up front had a whole sheet of Mickey the wizard and between songs in the first set, got out the sheet, tore off a couple of hits, nodded at Jerry (who appeared to be looking right at him) Jer pointed and laughed.....ahhh memories of the Spectrum scicorso

What is it with this place? I mean every show I hear coming out of the Spectrum, much less Philadelphia are all just knockouts no matter the year. This one is exceptional.
