Sleepy in St. Louis, Part 2
The second night at the Kiel unfortunately is marred by another night of nearly lethargic playing. While this show is not a throwaway (it is 1973 Dead, after all), it pales in comparison to other shows from the era. For those with the constitution for cherry picking segments of shows, allow me to recommend the Dark Star->MLB Jam->Dark Star, but with reservation. I’d hardly call it essential material. The MLB jam itself is perhaps the highlight of the evening, played at almost half speed, with no sense of urgency or gusto in the playing--just a patient wait with a “bucket beneath the cow” mentality. I consider this portion of the show to be nice supplemental material, once the cream of 1973 (and there is a lot of cream to be had, folks) has already been obtained. I’ll concede there’s a certain serene feeling that is elicited in the aforementioned segue, but it’s perhaps best played in a dreamy state late at night on a cold winters night. While it may be true that certain “space-heads” and mellow Dead aficionados may find something to treasure here, the general listener, and certainly the deadhead who appreciates the more energetic and inspired Dead will be left with an itchy sensation that was never fully scratched. To be conscientiously objective here, I can’t warrant more than three stars (two and a half if allowed) for this show, overall.

Naptime
This show is very beautiful and nearly flawlessly played. The Dark Star is creative and the Eyes is definitely one of the better versions of '73.
But here is where I run into a problem with fall '73 vs. '74, and part of why I like '74 better: shows like this one are just too mellow! Don't get me wrong, I love the dreamy, spacey side of the Dead, but I have heard this show several times now and I just think there are far more energetic and enjoyable performances from fall '73.
I really dig the 10/25 show, for instance, and of course the monsters of November like 11/14 and 11/17, way better than this one. Sorry folks but this is just imho.

One of the best
The first set maybe isn't that great by 73 standards, but the second certainly makes up for it. Just looking at the setlist, you can see it's packed. Sweet, sweet, jazzy DS with a lovely MLB jam. Stella tends to put me to sleep, but Eyes wakes me back up in smoking fashion. WRS on top of that is almost gratuitous. No complaints whatsoever about the sound. I'm glad I downloaded this while I still could.
edit 2/6/10: This is one of those shows that point out how essential it is to hear every instrument. Bob's playing is important to the sound just like anyone else in the band, and he especially shines on rollicking jams such as the pre-verse Dark Star jam or the incendiary Eyes outro. That's my biggest frustration with many 74 soundboards - you can't hear Bob, so the sound is thin and incomplete. Hey Rhino, how about a complete "retirement" shows release? How they can order a whole run removed from Archive when all they've released is a movie soundtrack with bits and pieces of multiple shows is beyond me.

Wroth it for the MLB jam alone
the Dark Star > Mlb Jam > Dark Star....Lordy. It's Just Magic. It reminds me of Wagner's Tannhauser for some reason.

Took me a while to get here, but it was worth it. October 73 is looking like one of the best in gd history.
First set hilite is China Rider. The jams are quite mellow but not lacking in quality.

Not a Master Reel / Noise Reduction Applied
12127 is not a Master Reel. It is likely, a Master Reel > Cassette that has had 15 to 20db noise reduction applied. Spectral analysis clearly shows how noise reduction has affected or removed the white noise.
12126 spectral analysis can be seen here:

12127 spectral analysis with the noise reduction can be seen here:

The noise reduction is done well. If this were labeled a remaster and the lineage was listed correctly, it would be considered a good job.

True Five-Star Special
This show is a mind-bender, and the audio is among my favorites ever. Phil's bass booms and resonates in places, and Jerry's vocals are gorgeous. The microphone he's using makes it sound as if he's singing through an electrified megaphone to some extent. It lends a beautiful old-timey vibe to the recording. The band seems to have been in a mellow mood on this evening, but the playing is tight as hell. My favorite oxymoran: loose and tight.
"Here Comes Sunshine" is my favorite show opener ever. Right up there with "Help on the Way". Sublime Dark Star > Stella Blue.
All the years combined. They melt into a dream.
Indeed.
This is worth taking up a gig on your hard drive.
Peace.

Jazzy Dead
An awesome show with outstanding jamming. Indeed one of the truly best from the 73-74 era. A very fluid Dark Star compared to the crazy Star from 10/25/73.

top 5!
This is a show that often gets overlooked in the amazing stack of shows that was 1973. They didn't do a show on Halloween that year, so this is really their Trick or Treater. And what a treat! The show kicks off with another great HC Sunshine, and the China>Rider and Playin are very strong. The 2nd Set features a rare pairing of Dark Star>Stella Blue>Eyes that really delivers the goods. That combination, plus a follow-up Weather Report Suite make this show a major contender for the top 5 in my book. The Dark Star is as cosmic as any from 1969, with Jerry and Phil playing off each other in some truly inspired moments. A show that only gets better with time!
