first of his three runs. Sweet notes. His second take dances like a Globetrotter weave. But Keith turns up the volume on his own solo and there's a bit of a clash. At the six minute mark, Donna starts decidedly off-key (ouch), but thankfully finishes soon. 10:35 the jam takes a Lazy-Lightin-like turn, and soon Garcia, drums and Keith are nearly trading fours. A unique bit of improvisation. Keith then comes up with his own little phrase; Garcia soon adds another new theme on top of it; and we are in to Fire.... At 0:15 Garcia begins with his wah on the Donald Duck setting. 1:08 he starts singing, perhaps before he was ready. He has trouble remembering the second line of verse one. His first solo features a few very slow, aching bends. Verse two he begins "Almost aflame..." In the middle of his singing, the recording here goes into an echo-y garage (ah well). At the chorus, the patch ends. About 4:40 he launches into the final solo, the traditional descending scale, but he is clearly not all that comfortable. He picks up speed a a minute later; begins a nifty ascent; and starts a warble around 6:15. With Weir's slide in the background, he trills it til 6:40, and they take it out. Launching into Miracle next was probably a welcome tonic...a pretty good jam follows, starting around 3:30, like a rollicking blues jam coming out of Truckin'. They keep it rolling until 7:45, and kind of bring it to a quick halt.

Another Occurrence of Kismet.
This Show took place the night of the Jonestown Massacre. Jim Jones was shot and killed around the middle of "It's all over now"...Spooky. I'd rate this
...
killer performance five stars ,if not for the pedestrian playin' from Keith Godchaux.

good results from a venue that seats less than 4000 people. Yes, I agree, even Donna sounds good....

gem of a concert by the Dead. Although I haven't digested the entire show yet I can't wait to post a review here to get this show some attention. I'm listening to 'Miracle' right now and it frickin' rocks the house down! The Scarlet Fire was also quite awesome after a solid first set. This show delivers, the boys are ON FIRE, the engine is cookin' full throttle and the beast is breaking out of the cage! Get this show!Even Donna is good here, gang. I ain't pullin' your chain since I was never a huge fan of hers. Some technical notes: 'Jack Straw' has a major cut at the beginning and there is an AUD splice for a few secs in 'Fire on the Mountain' but it's aptly handled, kind of sounds like you went somewhere at the show and came back out in time to hear Jerry finish burning the mountain. ;-) Also, the show is difficult to fit onto two 80 mins. CDs. With a bit of sacrifice you can get the show to fit by 1)deleting the first song (since it's cut anyway), 2)'El Paso' and all the 3)'tunings', 4)move 'From the Heart of Me' to CD2 and then move 5/6)Scarlet/Fire to CD1. That leaves you enough room on CD2 for the rest of the show. I usually do not this kind of "maneuvering" and keep shows as whole as possible but in this case it works.
