Warfy
The 8th show of the series. Not in the better half of the 25 shows but with distinct highlights, and the first Deep Elem Blues since '70.
First Set. Deep Elem would get better through the series - they played it six times. They warm up and by Rosalie McFall they're killing it. Dark Hollow is way uptempo and one of the best (though this was nailed throughout the series). To Lay Me Down is flawless - if not the most exciting version ever. Sources are incomplete for the next two. Ripple isn't bad but this was a stripped arrangement without much Jer.
Second Set. Alabama has dropouts on the Bertha source so you might try the Blanchard. The mix was probably screwy in person - Jer rips off a couple great solos but we'll never really hear them. Greatest Story is nice but Candyman and especially Mama Tried are flat. Jer disappears from Mexicali. High Time is harmonized like a '71 and well-played, albeit kind of sleepy. The rest is well-played but devoid of sparks, until the Deal. It's much more powerful in its complete version. It appears on Dead Set with 4 edits; a couple of which are really weird and unnecessary. On the blanchard source the edits are: @1:39>2:08; 3:22>3:36; 3:57>4:03 & 4:07>4:22. On the official release they are approximately @1:35[29sec]; 2:47[14sec], 3:06[6sec] & 3:11[15sec].
Third Set. On Dead Set, Feel Like a Stranger has the most edits of any official release. Otherwise it's a good version. (On the blanchard: @3:09>3:19; 3:38>3:57; 4:04>4:14; 4:24>4:47; 5:05>5:31; 5:38>5:48; 6:16>6:34; 7:11>7:31 & 7:39>7:53. On the official, approx.: @3:02[10sec] , 3:21[19sec], 3:29[10sec], 3:39[23sec], 3:57[26sec], 4:02[10sec], 4:30[18sec], 5:07[20sec] & 5:16[14sec]). It sets up for a fantastic Franklin's that's brisk and as good as the one used for Dead Set (10/25). Now they're flying. Estimated is exciting. Too bad that on the SBD you can hear Brent but barely Bob and Jer in places. Eyes is fast, varied, and dynamic. There's a cut in Space of maybe ½min. An excerpt of Not Fade is on the bonus disc for Dead Set (all but 20sec of the front and 18sec from the end). Not the best of the 8 they played but okay. The rest is average '80.
1st Set: B-
2nd Set: C
3rd Set: B-
Overall = 3¼ stars
Highlights:
Rosalie McFall - best of the 8
Dark Hollow - uptempo this night
Deal - better when heard in full
Franklin's Tower - brisk
Estimated Prophet - excited; exciting
Eyes of the World - fast, varied, dynamic
SOURCES: Song breaks and tunings are edited on all SBD sources. The bertha-ashley_19147 is the best for the 1st set and ½ of the 2nd. The blanchard_14989 is the only source for the rest. It's rough, noisy, slow (needs +2% pitch correction) and needs the balance set. Edits of Deal and Feel Like a Stranger are on Dead Set and an NFA excerpt is on its bonus disc.

Comedy show also
I was at part of this run.(10/2 > 10/4). Wasn't Al Franken and his sidekick the opening comedy act. I know I was at some shows when Al opened and I think it was these. He was a big fan of the boys. Anyone else remember this? Grate shows, 1st row balconey for 2 nights. What else can I say. "Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile"

very heart-felt version of to lay me down. they've pinpointed the essence/feeling of the song on this one.
the entire show is stellar aside from the few glitches.
jerry sounds so completely at home playing in this genre (acoustic), as if its the one style of music in which he really shines. just one of those things that makes him so unique. electric or acoustic, you hear a musician truly in his element.

This Is Acoustic Grateful Dead With Electric Mr Lesh
Impeccable remaster with accent on deep bass ~ just the way you like it. Vocals, guitars and Piano are all immaculate and I would give this a higher rating except for the cut halfway thru On the Road Again and a big glitch-ola on Ain't No Lie. Ripple is so wonderful it sounds as if it was conceived, composed and captured that night all in one fell swoop. All of the "acoustic" set is pure, unadulterated joy. This statement from a Dead Head who never was wild about acoustic, but this is great acoustic.
In the electric set, Alabama has jumps and Greatest hesitates slightly, but Candyman, with Jerry's unassuming yet sparkle-crackling solo hits the mark in both power and subtleness. Mama into Mexicali is lively enough, but then the stream ends...very heartbreaking, for the overall verve and energy of the the musicianship and ensemble features of the band that night portended visions of an awesome and splashy display. But you will not hear the rest of the show on this version.
Judging by what I have heard from reviewing this particular show that this night was a very special night in GD lore, but, alas, I will have to track down another source if ever I am to appreciate the fullness of it in time.

GD @ Warfield -4 October 1980
Don't overdue your equalizer on this one, but get ready, Bobby's a little loud early, base drum is alittle up, too -- Phil'ws monitor is the balance but comes off low. Audio is much better on other recordings from this run...
start w/ the set one week after this one and see what you think.
Love it that on my media player, the Deep Ellem is listed as "Bertha" and the running time???

Great stuff!
For those of us that saw any of these shows they were great with the cool barnyard set and the slides getting projected of their entire career while they played. If you listen closely you can hear clapping for no reason and thats when a slide came up of Jerry on a camel in Egypt or Bob clowing around with Pig in the Haight.
This is crisp sound and a great performance + I am almost certain this is the Rosalie Mcfall, Dark Hollow and To lay me down are from Reckoning. Enjoy+
