I remember people lighting Roman Candles and M80'sbetween songs. Donna did a great "you ain't woman enough" which is never listed. Do I care.....not a bit cause the memory still burns brightly. I snuck in for the "Uncle Johns" sound check.And me all but 17 years old while Marmaduke and Jerry shared a joint and looked at me as if to say whats this kid up to? But they let me be............yeah those were the days between!

This snippet shall surely satisfy all you Leshophiles out there, including the writer of this review. In fact, I'll be as bold to say that Phil never shined brighter than in Feb of '73 during his whole 30 career with the Grateful Dead. Pity we don't have access to the entire contents of this show, but the He's Gone-->China Doll run is some of the jammin' best 70-odd minutes the band ever played, and we should appreciate what we can get! This one is worthy of a place in anyone's collection.

this partial, though not the best of '73 by any means, have some excellent moments, including a very hot Other One with some killer phil zone and a nice fluid jam. the truckin' that precedes it has somewhat of a shaky start but is otherwise great too. and lets not forget the eyes; i would also not consider it one of the best of '73 (that doesn't come 'til much later in the year) but it is quite pleasing none-the-less.

this source drops out to a muddy sound at the beginning of eye's. Even the good part of this source isn't as crisp as the other source.

this was the show where the wore Nudie Suits. Not sure it was the only night, or how it was decided theyd wear them at this venue, but....

This was my first Dead show. Sugar Magnolia was amazing, kinda one of those moments when you think to yourself that everything is perfect. Been a Deadhead ever since! Amphitheater was a dump, but had it's own kind of character -- you could actually hear the cattle in the background just outside the theather doors. It's long gone and the Dead went on to play a bunch of great venues in the Chicago area.

This is the show from the day I was born. Can you guys help me get a hardcopy? I don't know how to capture the Real-Time Streams of these shows. I'm a youngin at 32, but I love the Dead and this show means alot. My first show was Bonner Springs, KS 1990 July 4th at 17 years old...wow...then the next year June 6th and 7th, 1991 same place. So young, and in the right place. Please help me figure out how to get this show on CD.

i had moved back to chicago after 8 years in northern calif in dec 72. it's winter, i'm homesick and the boys are playing here on my birthday. now the amphitheatre was old, dirty(not like winterland), chicago stockyards dirty, people were rowdy, throwing rocks through skylights along the sides, nothing like the scene in northern calif. i was getting a little freaked and they started playing box of rain. i was back HOME again, tears of joy and until tonite didn't really remember it was a pretty good show. what a great site this is and thank you to all the tapers and archivers. there have been alot of great shows here over the years besides at alpine. the auditorium, the uptown, and even an occasional pretty good one at the horizon, even with its poor acoustics and hostile environment, that were maybe overlooked with the heavy influence of the two coasts, but they're here for everyone now. enough remeniscing, on with the tunes

it probably goes without saying that 1973 is probably the highlight of the dead's career for leshophiles, but this show contains some of his most interesting licks and solos.

I just streamed this show while reading reviews since it's one I haven't heard. Somewhere during Eyes Of The World it kicked in that I was again listening to something unique and special. Listen to Bobby's playing. I love what he did with these early Eyes. When I first heard the Eyes from 02/09/73 I loved the way Bobby played because I'd never heard it before. Here's another example of the taseful work Bobby was capable of.

Does any else notice that only Eyes sounds different? Very reminiscent of my old tape of 02/22/73. Especially in the cymbals. Is it the perfect sound that everyone's bitching is lacking from almost every show here? No. Is it wonderful? Yes. Does it place you in that room in 1973? Definitely. And that's all that matters.

I hate to offend the Phishshits, but my first Dead tape was an unlistenable copy of the acoustic set from Harpur's College 1970. No, not a scratched, second-hand copy of Dick's Picks. This was back in the Dark Ages when people worshipped men in pointy hats and traded something called "Tape". And I loved every hissy minute of it. This was more than 20 years ago so it doesn't make me the oldest fart in the bathroom but I bet I'm close.

I know in the digital age we should all expect and yes, demand perfect sound. Otherwise why would we be listening to the Dead or bootlegs for that matter? Or worse yet not spending a hard earned dime downloading it? Why did they even bother playing if they couldn't make a pristine soundboard for us every time? And why can't they sing every note on key and get the words right? For that matter, why waste our time with these lengthy jams when we just want to hear a 3 minute Truckin' and go get some waffles? And GOD, those horrible audience tapes. Why don't they just give us the master soundboards so we don't have to sit through that nightmare?

No one disrespected their fans more than the Dead. Public rehearsals, flubbed lyrics, twenty minute jams without a bathroom break, the horrors never ceased.

Luckily, we don't have to get off our fat collective ass anymore. No more trekking to the mailbox, just click on an icon and a reasonable facsimile of live music will appear on your computer.

And while we're complaining about the lack of digital recorders in 1973, let's just count our blessings that we don't have to interact with real humans anymore without hiding behind a nom-de-plume like Thor@aol.com or hUnGbEeF@braindead.com.


Remember, music is subjective. Just like sex and coffee and beer. Not everyone likes the same thing. But complaining needlessly about something no one can change is childish. If all that's out there is an audience recording, for god's sake don't listen to it. Wait for Dick to spin in his grave and shit out the board master. Or maybe, just maybe, give it a listen. Use those knobs named after a fish and a misspelled 3 base hit and see what's really there. Maybe there's nothing there. Maybe you should stick with jay z and Anne Murray. Or maybe you'll be rewarded with something called music and an experience unknown since that very music was recorded.

Or maybe you should just light up and watch Oprah.

One one rocks and eyes is really long and great but the sugar mag and casey jones are for the record books

Subject says it all. If you like the He's Gone>Truckin>Other One>Eyes medley as much as I do, you must get this 2cd show. Not complete by any means, but what's here is SICK! The Eyes is particulairly impressive. The 3rd ever version of this song snakes thru multiple themes including Solomon's. Finally after almost 20min, Jerry closes "his Eyes" for China Doll.

Incredible composure in their playing throughout. Suffers an unfortunate cut in the jam before Eyes. Good sound. Likewise for Maples through to this one - all worth having.

This is one of the best overall 2nd sets from this year. Nothing but tasty jams throughout. Sound is great; very interesting jamming - can't stop listening! One of the best versions of TOO that I have ever heard - I wanna quit my job, just to keep listening to this show!
