This is a great show (stumbled upon it today in my bookmarks, titled as "great show", go figure) !!!
The transition from AUD to SBD is awesome, it sounded ... like the place was coming down all around the band. I have a 1970 show that does the same thing with Mason's Children, it provides both ambiance and depth that you don't always get from a crystal clear SBD.

you why you like the dead so much, play them this. are you %#@*ing kidding me? say what you will about other time periods, other shows, but this is simply
...
excellent playing with a varied and extraordinary setlist that would basically disappear foreever only a few years later.
the rest has clearly paid off and the self-indulgence over-medication and tour fatigue that changed their sound forever in '79 nowhere to be heard. they just sparkle!

Great F-ing show, but where's the first set? Perhaps I don't want it based on what I'm reading here, but I sorta like the whole experience. When I'm walking
...
down the street with one of these shows on my ipod it's pretty darn close to being there. You can indeed absorb the unique energy of these shows and expereince the flavor and nuance that makes them what they are. This whole archive is absolutely marvelous. As I was just telling my buddy, I feel like I am back. I could quit my job today, whip out a batch of shirts and hit the road tomorrow if the band was still going. I'm serious. I now understand why I love these guys. Everything you need to live in this crazy world, everything you need to be happy and survive is right there, in these songs, in these lyrics. But I know y'all feel the same. First set anyone?

I really love the beginning of Saint - having it be an aud recording at beginning puts you right in the hall to feel the vibe. but then it switches to
...
SBD right when you need it (lyrics and rest of show). both are very cool. kind of wish every SBD opened like this one...
and oh yeah, great overall show!

That was a really nice Wharf Rat experience I just had. 30 years later. Smooth and dreamy, not overpowering like in later years and very in control going
...
into Round and Round gradually bringing the crowd back down from the stratospheres and getting them ready to just bring it on home with rock and roll. No Donna Screamin, how cool.
I like the big Wharfs too but this was nice. I first visited the yellow ballons in 1993 after a 3 year layoff from shows (for PPT reasons)and have been Rat ever since.
Real nice souns as well. Too bad no first set.

I'm surprised this show isn't ranked higher. Maybe because its only a partial soundboard. This set begins with St Stephen and it has an audience splice
...
at the beginning, but when the lyrics begin, the soundboard kicks in and it sounds really great. St. Stephen > Eyes is really amazing... this recording is absolutely a top 10, or even a top 5 just for that alone. It's a shame the soundboard from the first set is gone. As far as audience recordings go, the first set isn't that awful, but its impossible to combine that recording with this one as a complete show because the quality is so different. The first set has really dominant shouts, when it starts some guy is screaming " hey man its cold rain and snow" and it just gets worse and worse. This second set has none of that, its totally clean sounding and is one of the finest shows available at this site. Just listen to this Wharf Rat and Franklins tower jam. Pure gold here. This is a must have show.

There were some great shows from 1976 and this is definitly one of them. The quality of the recording is very good and Phil's bass has a very soft but
...
punchy quality. Great setlist and great energy throughout.
Unparalleled version of Wharf Rat in second set sets the tone for the last part of the show. Donna manages to not totally ruin the show and actually sounds good in Around and Around. Last song, a very nice version of Franklin's Tower.

I have had an nth generation, hissy AUD tape of the first half of the second set for years, and even though it was one of the worst sounding tapes in my
...
collection it was one of my favorites. Why? Because I have NEVER heard a St. Stephen or Eyes played like they did at this show. There is an effortless grace combined with a monstrous, yet gentle power pervading the band here, especially Jerry and Phil. Phil drops some of the greatest bombs of his career during these two songs. Thanks to archive.org, now I can hear the crystal clarity of this SBD recording and hear exactly what the boys were doing, rather than my brain filling in the blanks and me saying, "Whoa, did I really hear what I thought I heard?" And you know something? I prefer my my muddy, hissy AUD over this SBD. It's like a magician revealing how he did a mind-blowing trick. Still downloaded it. Kicks ass.

I agree with cow bell guy. Best cow bell solo ever during Dancin'. And the show is tight.
Oh yeah, and the Eyes of the World is top three, second ... maybe. First is 6-11-76, two days later. Listen and find 'it'.

First of all WTF is up w/ 6/9. A year later the dead play what some have called the best dead show ever! Whether that claim is true or not this is now
...
my second favorite show.
What impresses me is Bob Weir's playing. He is really responding well to Phil and Jerry and is playing very free, well phrased riffs with a LOT of energy. This is what is so great about the dead sound in the late 70's. Everything is real balanced and you get a sense of how the band is reacting to each other in these jams. I agree this is the best Let It Grow i have heard yet and this show has given me new faith in '76.

Okay, so I've been reading all of these reviews and downloading for about a year now and this is my first review, but I felt compelled to write it. Yes,
...
the first set has sound quality issues, but this is STILL my favorite show. They sound SO tight and the music just flows. Don't understand one poster's comments about Dancin' being sloppy - it is the BEST one IMHO. St. Stephen, Eyes HOT HOT HOT! I also love the tightness of Lazy Lightning/Supplication - again the best versions so far I have heard. They are so in synch and Jerry is on fire - it sounds so beautiful with a nice full sound. I always wondered why some deadheads are so down on 1976. This one and the Beacon show are so incredibly played I have ranked them both in my top FIVE. Of course, all of these reviews are just opinions and everyone has one but I urge you not to miss this show (even if it is just disc 2 and 3).

The band played with an infectious and inventive, if not a little sloppy, drive and determination. With the exception of S&D (of which I think the
...
band has played much better versions), each player (especially Garcia and Phil) are exhibiting a truly striking improvisational mindset. The highlight for me, though, with that said, is probably Let It Grow, full with Drums in the middle.

One of the better SBD's from 1976. The sound quality and playing are great on this one, much better than the 1st set being offered here. If you like '76,
...
this is a must have. Don't recoil in horror, but I cherry-picked my favorites from the 6/4/76 SBD to fill up the 2nd CD. The sound isn't as good as this set 2, but the I think the playing and sound are superior to that of the 9th's set 1. If you care, Cassidy, Candyman, L.L >Supp., Might As Well, Samson, and Cosmic Charlie fill out an 80 min. CD. The C.C. is a separate song, and doesn't flow into Let It Grow.

I too, have shyed away from 1976 in the past as all the tapes I had heard sounded so S-L-O-W... Well this show has absolutely changed my mind. And I also
...
get VERY irritated with Donna's off key wailing at times, but lest we forget that she is the one who introduced Keith to the band, and with the possible exception of Bruce Hornsby, the best pianist the Dead ever employed, IMHO. I know a lot of people really dislike Brent, but he sure could play the B-3, that's for sure! I would say if you are doubtful of '76 shows, try this one on for size. I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

Also lay off poor Donna. Her Deaniac screams do go through the head like a rusty nail but her hubby was the best keyboard player the band ever had.
