is on another level. Straight cooking. Not to mention, dark star is at its psychedelic peak with this one, seriously next level shit. I cannot fathom having seen shows like this one live, I would have exploded from sheer disbelief and joy, it's crazy enough to listen to decades later but yall some lucky fucks who caught the dead in their prime time. Thankful we have the recordings to reminisce with.

Howdy, friends! Deadlists (and DeadBase in any future edition) needs to update the listing for 3/24/70, Pirate's World, Dania FL.
The advert lists TWO ... dates, 3/22 and 3/23. These two dates both DID happen. I have spoken with people in Florida who clearly remember that the Dead played both nights, Sunday and Monday, and they went to both. Another person remembers having to choose between one show or the other and they ended up going the second night. This person remembers Morning Dew, Dark Star, and Lovelight, and so it would appear that the tape we have is from the second night of the two, 3/23/70.
I have also done library research and looked at microfilm of the local Ft Lauderdale News from March 1970, and the Dead were also listed in the paper for both nights, and the Youngbloods were listed to play Pirate's World the next two nights, 3/24 and 3/25. On the actual week of the shows, the paper again lists these dates all the same, with no changes or cancellations. So, between the newspaper and the people I have spoken with who were there, the Dead DID play two nights on the dates that are shown on the advert: 3/22 and 3/23.
Furthermore, Bob Weir has talked about how the band finished writing most of the song Truckin while sitting by the pool at the motel they were staying in for these Pirates World shows. Weir said that it was precisely because they were in Florida for TWO nights, and they had a free afternoon at the motel on the second day where they didn't have to travel, that it was possible for them to hang out at the pool and work on the final verses of Truckin. This means that Truckin was mostly finished on the day of the second Dania show, 3/23/70.
In conclusion, Deadlists and DeadBase both need to list two dates for Pirate's World: 3/22 and 3/23/70. And according to one person who attended 3/23, this is the show that we have on tape. There was NO Dead show on 3/24/70. The Youngbloods played that day and there were no changes or cancellations. The tape we have in circulation is 3/23/70. And there was the night before, 3/22, for which we do not have a tape or a setlist, but the date was played.

Before actually having heard beyond the 1st tune, I was reading some of the entries below, enthusiastic references to Dark Star, & back of my old,
...
jaded but Dead-loving mind I'm going, "Yeah, sure, you guys are always gushing superlatives no matter..." -not ready to actually believe that maybe...I mean, ya know, forgetting for a min. that this was 1970, a year flowering with some of the most well-executed, psychedelic Stars ever...as buried-treasure tapes would surface across the decades. So, I uhm...eventually arrived. Oh, Lordy. All you big Dark Star fans sit down, make yerself real comfy, and get set. I thought I'd heard all the great ones a long time ago. Gladly, I was wrong. Plus, the break, or cut they're describing below isn't that bad, really...we're thrown into the middle of Space/Feedback, and they gradually ease back into the heart of the essential Star jam again.. glorious. And eventually we find the trailing end.
Others have outlined several other highlights; I'll add only that the Lovelight here is not only really together and high energy, it has numerous unique, special moments from both Pig, and the rest of the band instrumentally. And last but not least folks, this is not only a great SNBD sonically, but is essentially a matrix-- a good bit of audience enthusiasm was captured as well. You can't possibly go wrong taking the time to check this one out.

lived in Ft Lauderdale from 67-69...returned to NYC in 69 and went back to Fla. numerous times. Happend to be there when this concert was announced and

I was in a band in NYC during 65-67 and bass player was a huge Dead fan. He was with us in Fla and attended this concert, too.
Prior to concert, 5 of us decided to take the ride across Pirates World, sort of an ore bucket thingy. While we're waiting to get into our cage, who's in front of us but Garcia amd his entourage...we wait and they get into the cage...a few mniutes later ( we had an abnormally long wait) we get into our cage...proceed to go 1/2 way across the grounds, about 50 feet in the air, and the ride stops...we decide it is the cops who want to bust us (Fla. in 1970 was, shall we say, intolerant of long hairs) so we start smoking everything we have...3-4 jointz each at a time...paranoid, the ride finally moves and we get to the end and the kid who opens the door says "Garcia told us there were a bunch of heads behind him, and to make sure you got a good long ride."
best ride of my life.

The band seems a bit rushed, and the length of most of these tracks is pretty short. But the Dead must have enjoyed playing these small Florida festivals
...
(see Seminole Indian Reservation) because they are all pretty fun shows, this one included. Charlie has done a fine job, as usuall, this sounds really good!
The Dark Star, in spite of being cut, is tremendous and packed with Jam themes! As is the Good Lovin'

Morning ... dew was a good start but short i think that the mama tried was good though the vocals are somewhat well not so loud, the good lovin' is just nsane with such and amazing jam it feels live a viola at points. the dont ease me in is too amazing. the cold rain and snow is typical but with a listen but the highlight of the show is the High time > Dark Star > Other One > St. Stepen >> Drums > NFA > Lovelight > me and my uncle
the dark star is spacy and great and the high time is amazing you feel jerry put his soul in the music but the st.steven to the end is just epic to the core great show an a must for the essential dead head the lovelight is straigh up pig pen and great to the core solid jammy

the dead had a few extra minutes so took it from a lovelight to a me and my unclebo weir said "say, we've still got a few minues left, guys. how bout a "Me and My uncle," man?"

Note: the beginning of Morning Dew is cut. I thought the sound was excellent; a pretty well balanced SBD, very clear, no noise.
I enjoyed the funky jams ... during Good Lovin', with Jerry ripping those leads, almost sounding like Viola Lee at one point.

Almost like a 60's show, but there were lots of those in the early 70's too, and this is one, with a crazy jam on Don't Ease Me In of all places. Jerry

could fit them anywhere when the attitude was right. I forget which smoked the most here, but generally, after the sound gets worked out around the second tune, look out. For sure a very good lovin and lovelight as well. i only review shows i think are 5 star, maybe 7 or 8 so far. If anyone is on track with these, let me know what you like: 5/31/69, 6/14/69, 10/25/69, and even 6/16/74. I tend to go for energy over clenliness/organinzed sounding, and would say sound quality is a close second. priority.

the sound that I am hearing from these speakers--blows so many of the modern shows mixes out of the water (even w/ a lil' hiss--1970!) So well rounded--even the audience. Jerry's voice on Cold Rain and High Time is epecially sweet and emotive. The drumming in the late 60's and early 70's always reminded my ears of a cross between a machine gun and a locomitive. Its all here, folks! And then there is Pigpen......................Thanks again, boys!!
