Whoever the audience taper was, Harry Ely or another, he did a great job, made a recording that is top notch state-of-the-art for the time. He must have had his mics virtually on stage. Salute!

This show is solid, the Dead doin' what they did at that point in their rapidly evolving way, wrapping up a four-night stand trying to follow Miles Dave, no less. Dancin is a standout, and Viola Lee, and Schoolgirl. Man's World isn't as mega as some performances later in the year, but Pigpen delivers.

I don't understand people who listen to this and say, 'well, I'll give it 2 1/2 stars.' If you went to this show, or listen to it now, and you don't understand that the Grateful Dead are doing their thing as hard as they can for you on this particular occasion ("warts and all," as Jerry put it), and that, as Bill Graham said, one night, 'they aren't the best at what they do, they're the only ones at what they do' and on another night called them, 'on any given night, the greatest rock and roll band in the world' -- well, I feel sorry for ya.

The last show of the 4-night run co-headlining with Miles Davis. Interestingly, they played again a few days later at nearby Winterland (there were 31 Bay Area shows in '70). This would have been the perfect time to see the Davis Quintet. The Dead played one lengthy set, about 2hrs with the missing Bid You encore. A typical show from the era (gphishmon already said it best). The May shows are a step above the April shows. The AUD portion is brilliant for '70 - you can hear Phil.

Schoolgirl has a nice section ~12:00. The next couple are rote run-throughs. China gets a little sideways, but a highly spirited Rider more than makes up for it. It does sound like they go into High Time while finishing, but it equally sounds like a tape-over artifact. Either way, the beginning of Good Lovin' is cut - a middling version, way uptempo (even at the correct pitch). The jam coming out of Drums is a high point - especially Phil. Candyman is still the new tune; probably the 5th one. See the next show for a better example of this arrangement (or 5/2). But see 5/14 for the same in Deep Elem. The next couple pick up the zap, though Dire Wolf is a bit out of tune (which Bobby announces - into his mic). My opinion of this Dancin' in the Streets has improved. If not the absolute best from the period, it's fully interesting. Some hear a Tighten Up jam early on, but Dancin' is already two similar chords (so not a real Tighten, as in a Dark Star). There is, however, a pre-Mind Left Body jam that Phil plays @9:00. The way they come out of the jam is nice, but between 5:00>6:30 Jer really lights the fuck up and this section makes it a must-hear. In Black Peter Pigpen's organ sounds like a '70s soap opera going to commercial, but it's a fairly dramatic version, if awfully spare. The rest is a wash, with some sour harmonies in Uncle John's, a bland Man's World, and a Viola Lee that starts downtempo. This pace gives Jer a lot of room, but he doesn't really go anywhere, resting on trad figures.

Overall = 2½ stars

I had just moved from Berkeley to SF and couldn't pick up the signal for KPFA well enough..but recorded a static-laden version of most of these tunes....since have heard and recorded purer versions...best "Dancing in the Streets" I ever heard...though I saw them bake over this tune when the Dead played with Junior Walker at Fillmore West in June...some interesting thematic and rhythmic inventions during "Dancin'"...plus the inevitable (at that time) counterpoint via Lesh and Weir...unfortunately, that classical approach faded soon enough...

this electric deep ellum is similar/identical arrangement to the acoustic versions of the era and is RARE as such. late in 1970 they started playing deep ellum electric more regularly with a somewhat different arrangement. see the el monte shows from 12/70 where they played the 'different' electric arangement 2 of the 3 nights

this tape contains a more prominent mix of the organ than almost ALL tapes of the era. You can follow the organ on Dancin' past the opening riff, etc He is also more prominent in 'Poor peter' compared to most versions and is much louder in Viola Lee than the portchester version from 3/70 and harpur 5/2/70. Another good viola lee example of GD speed metal from approx 11 minute mark until 12:20. ahhh...if only we had a good recording of viola lee from the F east in 7/70.....

Viola= They have a nice groove going on a song they would pull from rotation by the summer of 70.
This one very good with a dose of Feedback to end!

Didn'tmake 1st shows till 5-11&5-12,1981 at New Haven Coliseum, but still managed to hit 100th show, after a 4year layoff 91-95, went to Tampa,Fl., 4-7-95 to get 100th, and sadly my last time seeing JERRY! I did,get in my 1st Loose Lucy, Visions Of Johanna, & 1 that I always loved to hear when drinking Kool Aid, PHIL'S UNBROKEN CHAIN !!!! GOD BLESS ALL WHO SAW SHOWS FROM1965-1995!!!! You're really in the Dead's world throughout this one, it takes you around like a tour. Some shows have abrupt transitions that snap you out of it, but this one flows really well. Especially from candyman -> vlb. Great show.

Dancing through Viola Lee is solid. Jerry peaks May-November.

I will have to cast my vote for this Dancin' as being far better than 1970-05-02. Garcia's solo is way more unique during this show. Starting at 4:43, he launches into a purely "Dead" moment of group synergy. The whole band comes along for the ride with Phil pounding out the jam in signature style. I am most taken aback by the prominence of Pigpen's organ. On most of the 1970 tapes his organ volume is turned way back. This song and this show might be considered one of the last great Pigpen organ shows. He is recreating the fast-paced organ playing you hear on shows from '66-'68. Viola Lee Blues is magical as a result. Now, as for the Dancin'-

5:40 Jerry starts the magic carpet ride

6:22 - 6:40 peaks into a psychedelic epiphany

7:08 - 7:25 a little mind blowing takes place

8:27 - Pigpen contributes some fine organ

8:53 - noodle riff leads you off to the stars

I know some people prefer the 5/2 Dancin' because it almost sounds like a Dark Star. Well I think that is great, but it does just that: sounds like a Dark Star jam. I think this Dancin jam is much more true to the original melody while blasting off into some interesting territory.

This may not be the best show all the way through, but the Dancin' is hard to beat.

After listening to the whole show, I will agree it is not the best of 1970 (that china>rider is pretty weak), but there are some great moments. And while I will not argue with anyone who says the 5/2/70 Dancin' is better (definitely makes a case for best ever) I still say this one is on par - Garica creates almost a "beat" with his guitar (well really he's playing off the rhythm section but that's just what it sounds like to me) in places that I have never heard before - really interesting stuff. Portions really have that Dark Star feel to them too, know what i mean? And as for Phil and the rest, well they are CERTAINLY doing their thing here...great stuff

I dont see how the lack of a Dark Star or Other One is detrimental to this performance.

An interesting set list and there is certainly plenty of fine jamming taking place, particularly during the energetic Dancin' in the Streets, which is extremely well jammed and every bit as good as the performance of that song in Binghampton on 5/2/70! (98 pts)

which is still pretty good, but this show is more noticeable for what it DOESN'T have - Dark Star, Other One, or Eleven (which would soon disappear entirely). Still, there are some stellar moments, especially on Viola Lee Blues. "Snaky" is a good word to describe Jerry's playing on this one. The Dancin' is good, but come on, people! It's NOT EVEN CLOSE to 5/2/70, even if it does appear on Fallout from the Phil Zone. Since that show isn't on the Archive, I can't review it in the proper place, but let's just say Jerry played the 5/2/70 Dancin' with a creativity unapproached on any other version of this song, including a psychedelic section reminiscent of 69 Dark Stars. (If you don't have DP8, what are you waiting for? Get it!!)

Schoolgirl, Uncle John's, and Man's World are pretty solid, but the rest of the show hasn't got much interesting, and the China>Rider transition is sloppy as heck - they're playing in two different keys. The sound quality is excellent, a quick patch notwithstanding.

Sunday night was a Steallar show including a mind-blowing set by Miles Davis, but I have been searching for a while(try almost 40 years)for the
full Miles Davis set from Saturday 4-11-70 as well
as the Dead's set from that same night(including an awesome acoustic set in between both electric sets). The Boys were truely inspired by Miles that night with an out-of-this-world version
of the Dark Star--St. Stephen--Not Fade Away--Lovelight suite. the last minute as well as the
the entire Lovelight is available @ Archives.org
but the rest of the show has gone missing all these years. If anybody has The Dead's set or Miles or both you will bring a long search to
a happy ending. You can't go wrong with anything from 1970.A singularly unique transition year in the elvolution og The Grateful Dead. My Email

If you like Pig then this show is for you. Great sound for 70' well mixed and the tunes are tight and loose all at the same time. Viola Lee and Deep Elem Blues are sure to impress. The opener gets you moving and Jerry bends around Pig's harp so nice.

I had downloaded this show quite a while ago. I wanted to wait for the anniversary to write my review. I have downloaded over 350 shows, only bumped my gums on a couple hundred as of today...When I downloaded this show I didn't know if it was okay or not...so now I tell everyone how I do it...I learned to share my knowledge of getting something for nothing from a book I read back in 73 called STEAL THIS BOOK by Abbey Hoffman...what a freak.

I love Pigpen, and this is a "MUST HAVE SHOW" for all us Pigpen fans.....ALLIGATOR!!!!

"This Is a Man's World" is how Pigpen sang it. The GRATEFUL DEAD arranged this song in a fast 6/8. Huge Blues influence from Pigpen, the SOUL of the Band. God Bless Pigpen. We all still miss him. A real treat to have this performance to cherish from now on...it means a lot to hear him do his stuff.

I was at this show and it sounded a lot better than this recording although this is pretty good quality, all things considered. It was my 4th in a row and I think I was tired and I had a long way to go to get home. I do not think I stayed for the encore.

i can say for sure, it is a smokin set from black peter through the end.....viola lee is ragged but hot....and its a mans world is totally unique and jammed out, dancin too....they were not posing back then when they aped these motown riffs, they really made these tunes their own....it makes the 80's/90's reincarnations sound so trite. at the end, it was a 60's cavalcade affair, running down the hits of yore. back during shows like this it was so much different, actual VITAL MUSIC that had a place in contemporary society....

i wonder what miles' thought of this gig....think he knew "viola lee blues" before these marin boys tore it up at the fillmore? i would guess not...sounded nice on the headphones....but just like the best sounding dicks picks, these tunes will just vaporize in the ether if not given the right listening envirnoment.....like in a truck with the windows open on the highway...you just aint gonna hear this......

Stange to read people complain about a 3 sec pause. If it bothers you, removing the pauses isn't a big deal.

It's about the music, people - not the 3 seconds between songs...

Set's sweet if for nothing else than the Deep Elem version like no other. Jerr's feeling the blues. Boyz sound understandably tired and ready to get off stage for their recharge. But their axes are on fire at times.

SB quality is good - 16 track, baaaaby! Love it. Viola's all sexy and crisp tonight - very strong, agreed. 5ish stars - maybe a 4 -- but whose countin.

This concert really cooks. I'm tempted to say this is one of the best of 1970. That's saying something.

GMLS is great and Viola Lee/Feedback is real good. Didn't care for the patch sound, but the sound on the rest of the show is outstanding and that's a good reason to download it. Man's World is good, but some of the others aren't that inspired.

OK, I'm prejudiced. This was my 2nd show (4-9 was the first), I had some serious electrolytes in my system and I was leaning against the stage right in front of Pig. These guys totally blew me away (again).

As far as I'm concerned, and contrary to another opinion expressed here, this was the mother of all Viola Lee's. I swore I saw electricity crackling out of the guitars. When I first heard ths recording I realized that it wasn't my acid-vivid imagination. It's that good. Lot's of other highlights including Dancin' and It's a Man's, Man's World.

Phil says he was in awe of what Miles was doing during this run, but y'know, I didn't end up going to see Miles 70+ times.

If you want to hear a example of the three dimensional wavelenght the dead produced, this would be a first rate example.

Perhaps the presence of Miles Davis on this night inspired the Dead to give a far-above-par performance. I don't know. But I do know, folks, that the Dancin' in this show is among the finest EVER played, a peer of 6/8/69 and 5/2/70. Excellent Black Peter, Man's World and an excellent Viola Lee. What's Mr. 3 stars talking about? "Laid-back?" Well, sure it's slow, but it sounds damn heavy and funky to my ears. The sound quality does not disappoint either. Crystal clear and with PRESENCE.

The Viola Lee is real laid back, which is not what I look for in my VLB's. The Dancin is pretty sweet with Jerry winding it up and down in a 7+ minute jam. Tell me this isn't a Mind Left Body with a different cadence around the 9 minute mark.....

Bobby is pretty much lost in the mix, until the organ dies down. A few barely audible digiskips in Dancin. Sound quality is good.

In a period of down to earth roots country and blues the Dead maintained again their aggressive and exploratory live act intact. Here they share the bill with Miles Davis who was also playing legendary improvisation with the recent albums of Silent In A Way, Bitches Brew and Live Evil. I"ve read where Lesh in particular would watch stage side and be blown away by Miles nightly however the Dead responded with their own magic as heard in this Dancin'. Foreshadowing the monster from Harpur in May, this version shakes and twists offering circular lead runs with trademark two headed beast rythyms.
