Get Over IT
Some of you bitch and moan about the tape quality in which case you need to buy the re-mastered FLAC from the Dead. This is an incredible show in which it sounds like they seriously practiced and it just sounds great with everyone on the same page. I find it satisfies completely. Keith is on his game, voices sound as good as the dead ever sound, and the tunes tight. You can even hear new material they are working on such as Stronger Than Dirt in the Other One Jam. I'm Happy.

Can't give this the raving review...
...I agree with JamminJerome. It's a huge show and I think that is the appeal for many of the reviews. I listened to the third set while I went running today and I was annoyed by all of the balancing/mixing problems (I downloaded the Charlie Miller SBD, but it's not Charlie's fault). Sometimes you couldn't hear Jerry sing, sometimes his was the only voice when they were singing the chorus to Casey Jones. Most irritatingly though is the bad mixing during the spacey part of The Other One. It got to the point that Jerry was the only guitar I heard! Everyone else was in the distant background. Jerry's voice started to fade in the third set too...I don't know if that was the case for the first and second.
Really an intriguing show but I can only give this 3/5, partially because of the playing and partially due to the sound quality.

overrated
sounds like every other 73 show, nothing REALLY sticks out. Long show, but that's not always a good thing. Other than the Playin and the GSET, neither the first nor second set really get going. The third set is excellent, but nothing out of this world except the post Truckin' jam. Jerry's voice sounds really off for most of the night, and the AUD patches aren't much fun.
3.5 star show, but I'm going to have to give this one a 3 because I feel that it is very overrated.

Help anyone?
I've been listening to the streaming and just love this show. I'd really appreciate it if anyone out there could get me the board of this show. I did a ton of downloading before the Dead pulled the SBs, I can't believe I missed this one! I'd be happy to help anyone looking for a particular even if you don't have this one. As Good As it Goetz
Some physical distraction's mar this show yet it is a totally spiritual re-enactment of what wasn't to be; encapsulated into wreckless a band done. Despite the physical, the spiritual rules. A 5 star performance, a 4 star recording/remastering. So what you say Michael? (He was the Arch-Angel overseeing this event) A keeper? Says Michael, the Archangel,
"Yes, a keeper."

SEVEN STARS
This show is SO 1973. My favorite show to discover for the first time on the Archive. Great versions of every song.... speshly the Jerry tunes, and YES!!!, this show dominates Kezar... like Kezar was a very happy aftershock from this gorgeous day under the Mountains of Santa Barbara, the Ocean... at some point during the psychedelic Other One Jerry-Bobby meltdown, they hit a great hard driving Phil&Bill jazz swing... it's burning... then all of a sudden Jerry brings the gear down.... only to launch right away into the same thing, just in a brighter mode... you can hear the whole crowd start dancing. Check out the audience tape, too, and DOWNLOAD IT NOW!!!! Sounds so good, the bass is booming over there

I never had a tape of this one, where has it been hiding? This is an underrated show in my opinion as I had never heard anyone make any comments positive or negative. Glad I downloaded this show when I did! I'm sorry for the folks who were unable to download this and others before the Dead made their fateful decision!!!

That's right, there is an added edge to the jamming. Jerry's singing with a pretty bad cold, so it stands to reason he would compensate with his guitar playing. As a result, his leads, while not lusciously toned as they would be at the end of the year (he needed to ditch the '72 Strat for the '74 and late '73 Wolf), are crisp, tight, and very potent. The best pre-November "Sunshine," "Eyes," a lotta other stuff, hell maybe I need a new listen.
3/24 reaches higher heights in the main jam though. But the secondary jam songs are amazing and refreshing here.

Altered State
Man, May 1973 seems like a long time ago. I was finishing my sophomore year at UCSB, just a simple minded 20 year old college student. Also, kind of in an "altered state" that day, if you get my drift.
It was sunny and warm that day but a bit breezy at UCSB's "football stadium", if I remember correctly. I use quotes because UCSB had dropped their football program a year and a half before. Still, there were over 20,000 Deadheads there and having a good time. I think the New Riders of the Purple Sage opened the show. Anyway, by the time the Dead started, I was tripping pretty good. The sound at the outdoor site seemed OK, but I remember thinking at the time that I might have been having some auditory halucinations, since I kept hearing this kind of random wailing sound mixed in with the music. It wasn't until a couple of years ago when I listened to these recordings that I realized that they weren't halucinations; it was Donna Gottcheaux's "singing"! Oh well, at least she looked really hot.
After a long trippy afternoon of good music, I was sunburned and happy and headed home (only about 4 blocks away, thank goodness). Anyway, it's great to listen to the concert and relive old times. -- SaldÃÂÃÂÃÂé

Don't Miss This!
For years you look through Deadbase at certain shows and think "boy, I bet I'll never find a copy of that one". This is one of those, and what a find! Another 4 disc wonder from 1973. This is just packed with great songs, and although there are some annoying AUD patches throughout the show, the overall effect is dazzling, with high energy versions of Bertha, Box of Rain and an up-tempo Tenn Jed where the "twang factor" is in abundance. China>Rider is delivered with conviction and speed, and listen to Jerry's clean guitar tone on TLEO as the band lays down a solid groove. Okay, your body is spinning, now how about your mind? They proceed to top off a strong Set One with a 19 minute Playin that's full of fire and lightning. How many great versions of Playin in 1973 ARE there? This one is certainly not to be missed for tight focused jams, and the SBD quality is so good you can practically hear their fingers on the strings.
Disc 3 just rocks like a pot of strong coffee - Jerry blazes on Story, and the tight jamming between Jerry, Bobby and Phil on HC Sunshine is breathtaking.
Disc 4 - light up another sparkler and get ready for some serious jamming. After briefly toying with a Nobody's Jam theme, they plunge into a 30 minute exposition of face-stealing virtuosity, with a bouncy jazzy Jam section (the AUD splice is so seemless you almost don't notice) and then a galloping Other One that begins fast and furious and never lets up. The inspired Eyes that follows evokes feelings of sailing down an open highway in a convertible on a warm summer day at 75 MPH with your CD player cranked up. And the Slipknot section at the end is guaranteed to please, suddenly landing you in a gorgeous heartfelt Stella Blue.
A very satisfying show that will be a welcome addition to your 1973 collection.
Not to be overlooked!
enjoy,
Dr. Flashback ;-)

This is beautiful to listen to and hard to say whats the best part here comes sunshine, playin rips, eyes is a kaeledescope of colors and primal enery, other one is really solid - jerry's voice is really wobbly but he steps up at all the right times and makes it clear he is there to play - Donna is great on you aint woman enough - Keith great..... Once you hear something like this and then listen to some of the stuff from 88 or 91 that gets a 5 have to scratch my head.... There are some defects in this tape which are distracting have to say but can live with it.

This is the Captain speaking.....
Jerry comes at you like a multi-headed deity and a good and humble friend all at the same time. Feels like his soul has been prised open and he's delivering his message to you from 3 feet away, voice almost cracking. One of the most energised performances I've heard from '73.
A little low in bass but Billy is right up there and
just so "on".
