Subject: some insane jamming
sound isn't exactly perfect, but this aud source has plenty of resonance and 'down on the floor' vibe... more to the point, the first set birdsong and supplication jam>let it grow offers some of the most insane jerry, weir, lesh, full band jamming with everyone listening to each other. bob's sound, especially on this aud, is really dialed in, prominent and pretty damn incredible.
with UJB to open set 2, the terrapin and playin' reprise -- and all the rest, i was pleasantly surpised to stumble over these '86 spring tour hampton shows.
'86 naysayers need to listen to this birdsong and sup>LIG...

The Stella Blue is incredible, followed by a high-powered Sugar magnolia, with an outstanding Baby blue.

Subject: pretty good
The beginning of set 2 is a mess (Honestly the UJB is NOT good) and there are vocal lapses all night, but there's enough desire and juice and hot stretches to make this well-worth hearing, and, agreed, the Stella Blue is excellent.

after seeing this show listed on a certain forumite's 'top ten of the latter era' list, i knew there had to be something worth checking out here. and i was pleasantly surprised!
this is a good aud, and more importantly a pretty sweet, pretty jazzy performance. Bird Song and Let It Grow are especially great.
who knew there was a ruby like this hidden in the wasteland of '86?

If this isn't one of the best Stella Blues the GD ever performed than I must be crazy. Trust me, give it a listen, especially the solo! listen to that run Jerry does at 4:10 to 4:17 holy crap! Masterful and Jaw Dropping! All hail the Mightiest Stella Blue..the rest of the show is fun, kinda funny the way they tried to transition into Let It Grow out of that Supplication Jam, almost came off with no hitches

I had a great time at these shows. This was the beginning of the downturn I believe they never fully recoved from. The band built incredible momentum in late '84, '85 was probably my favorite year, their lst trukly great year as they really brought it every night for the 20th Anniversary year (I caught 94 shows, and about 90% of them were in '83-'86, saw maybe 10 shows after Brent died, just didn't see the point.) The early '86 shows at the Kaiser marked the end of that era for me and represented their final peak as a band. I thought they sounded pretty tame after that, even those Fall '89 shows, great setlists but the jams didn't do much quite often, they were real short, and they sounded sterile. These mid-'80's shows - when Lesh was feeling out the Modulus which h started playing at Tempe in '83, Brent doing more on the Hammond B-3, were raw and powerful.
Anyway these were good shows, I loved Hampton (saw '83-'87 and '89) and I think the boys did too. The Box 3.20 was historic to say the least, a moment I still remember like it was last week. Alot of people forget 3.19 - get it for the debut of Visions of Johanna, perfect for Garcia and they did a good job on it. Roadrunner was fun, we had heard rumors and it set a real nice tone for the show. The Bird Song and particularly Let it Grow were great. I think this is the nght Garcia tried to coax Weir into Lazy Lightning and he just couldn't do it, Jerry payed almost the entire intro but Weir wouldn't bite. They could have done some good versions of that tune in '85 and '86 but unfortunately they kept it on the shelf after the halloween '84 BCT shows, which wasdn;t the best of versions. A killer Let it Grow however. And as usual we got the sweet Hampton Terrapin. This is the first year they played three nights in Hapmton, sadly Garcia deteriorated from there.
I agree with the reviewer below re: UJB, I thought it was a great choice to open the second set and real good veion.
I also wanted to mention that Garcia was actually doing Roadrunner before Weir / Kingfish did it in '75. You can find some early Garcia / Saunders band vesions from early '74, I've got a couple summer '74 versions he did with Legion of Mary. I recommend checking-out these Garcia versions as well as the Kingfish versions.
(Aanyone at the New Year's '82 shows? Lesh still played the Fender 4-string at those shows, correct?)

Once again, I like Joe's best. This show is quite good and even features a few rarities. Road Runner was a song that Bob did with Kingfish and Relix had even put a version out on record about a year before. The Dead as expected blow hard and this one and do a good job. It's a shame that it didn't last in the set lists longer and Dupree's was always a nice treat. Granted the set list is short but the playing is good. Grab this with the other two nights.
