This show is excellent. However, I would like to say that in 1971 the Capitol did not have bench seating. That came later (unfortunately). The Capitol was a classic Thomas Lamb movie theater and is now a national landmark.

When I first set foot in there, in 1971, it was a very magical place indeed. This was the place where Janis Joplin wrote Mercedes Benz before the show (in Vahson's Tavern next door, where she bought drinks for all). At this time, in suburbia, young, hip people were being harassed, followed by the police, etc. Yet, at the Capitol you could be among your own. It opened my eyes to see the throngs waiting in line and to see that a head shop was also next door (the appropriately titled "Store Next to the Capitol.)"

By the way, could someone post a decent copy of Jerry and Bob with the Allman Brothers at Gaelic Park. This was a very special concert (not long after Duane died).

Maybe 'cos they have been played before - starting with 18th Feb at the same venue and maybe even before then.

That quibble aside - a five star show as are all during this Feb 1971 run.

Would make a nice boxed set (as per the recent Winterland collection), but don't tell Rhino that I said that ............

I cant beleave nobody has commented that this was the first time they played, Warf Rat, Greatest Story Ever Told, Johnny B. Good, Looser, Playing In The Band, and Bertha. This was a monumental show for music history.

HOLY SHIT!!! I don't think Johnny B. Goode has ever been played at such a breakneck pace as in this show---balls-out R&R man... Anyway, NFA>GDTRFB>NFA, JBG are after the Good Lovin'.
One more show where straw was spun into GOLD!!!

One comment though, when shows are uploaded, could we get the jams as one "file" instead of breaking it up into "TRUCKIN'" > "JAM" > "DRUMS" > "THE OTHER ONE JAM" > "THE OTHER ONE" > "JAM"???? How about "Truckin" > "THE OTHER ONE"???? Since SBD's can only be streamed now it sucks when the stream stops to load the next "song"---the FLOW is broken. CHINA>RIDER, LAZY LIGHTNING/SUPPLICATION, NFA>GDTRFB>NFA, etc, etc, should ALWAYS be shown as ONE song or file also. I' can't be the only one with this gripe???

I give it 4 stars only because the sound mix takes a while to get right, but it is that close to a select few 5 star rating. Great performances to go along with the rest of the week in Port Chester, where the drinking age was 18. The sound for this winter run is clear as a bell, much clearer than the 1970 shows at the Capitol. The rhythm section of Bill and Phil is right up in the mix throughout, and although Jerry's guitar is not way out front, everybody is in the mix. They were basicially playing as a quartet for most of these shows. Good work Betty for the board and Leigh for the cleanup, no, GREAT work. Editing these shows is a labor of love, and I nearly have the entire run saved to disk. Every night in February they were in the zone. The Morning Dew, as with almost all versions, is spine tingling. Good Loving! I could go on...
Anybody else hear the notorious loose bass drum pedal here and especially on the 20th?

This is obviously not from 2004 but it is a great show! This is a soundboard from Capitol Theater, Portchester NY 02/23/71. This was a funky little theater, with bench seats and the place was often freezing in the wintertime. Portchester is a working class suburb about 20 miles northeast of New York City, on Long island Sound. The theater was pretty ragged but the Dead played some great shows during this run and like much of early '71, they play tight and dirty.
