This was it, my first show, 17 years old, grew up in ATL, saw every Atlanta show from this one until the last in 95 -
along w/a bunch of others, 50+, but the Omni seemed to get more and more special over the 8 years, the sound def got better) (& all the NC shows but that's a different story. I had after-school detention but I at least had a car so as soon as I got out I hauled ass downtown. I was already a bit experienced w/psychs & had school the next day and didn't want to be up all night so dropped while in detention. By the time I parked, actually found my friends outside, got inside and then into seats, I was real high, soaring. And in my addled state Jerry's guitar meted my mind in Candyman. And his guitar has had me ever since but that night my new head just followed Jerry all over that big cavern. I'm no longer in Atlanta but back then it was good times in a good place.

I got to see the Dead 9 times from 1072 thru 1988 and in my opinion this was the best time. The music was great, It was a strange night as I just walked in with no ticket. I saw many old friends that I hadn't seen in years. A truly magical might!!

I started seeing the Dead in 1980, first show was Radio City Music Hall when I was only 14. I saw about 345 shows before Jerry Passed. There was something extrodianary about the Dead on this particular night at the Omni. The
Mississippi Half Step, Looks Like Rain, Terrapin part of the show was absolutely mind blowing. I don't know what the F-ck they did but in middle of the L.L Rain, I swear it started to Thunder and rain in the Omni. It was the best L.L rain I ever heard. I miss the God Ole days!!!!

Nice show, good setlist, I especially enjoy the Far From Me through Terrapin. As far as LLR goes, 10-10-82 at Frost Amp. is unbeatable.

I don't know what Jboy was talking about as it relates to this show either............Seems a bit like a portfolio piece for a Rolling Stone resume to me............Not dissing either......................But my best assumtion is that he was mourning, and got a bit lost............Sound reasonable to anyone else besides me ?
At any rate, if that is the case, it sure says alot about the talent of DSO.
We're spiritual beings having human experiences....Don't believe the MIRROR!!!!

New to this site and loving it. 3/24/88...my 30th B-Day. Could have been listening to some "Dead" that night. "Wake of the Flood" is the best after rock-climbing cassette/CD to listen to on the ride home in the Bug. If you're ever in the Black Hills check out the "Dead" museum in Hill City owned by a guy who knows his stuff!

Subject: effectively somber???
The candyman from this particular night is a smoker. In fact from the Candyman on, the band is on fire. I don't hear a lick of somber in anything this whole evening.
This is a helluva first night to the east coast Spring tour. I wish I woulda been there.
Hey jboyaquar, are you reviewing the DSO version of this show, or the one here? I am thoroughly confused by your review: you mention Jerry lifting Eddie Guerrero's spirit, but Eddie Guerrero died ten years after Jerry died, and this show is in March, Guerrero died in November..??... What does a WWE wrestler have to do with GD anyway?? talk about non-sequitur bizarre-ness...??..Not trying to diss, just trying to figure out the connections???

Greetings fellow hippies ! hope you are all doing well.
this was my first show as well, and I was only there because my brother used to always take my to a spring concert for my birthday gift. Luckily for me, this show - the Dead's first time back at the ol' OMNI in 14 years - came around near my 3/27 birthday. So I figured that I would check out this band that I only "knew" through Europe '72.
In addition, we had the worse seats in the OMNI, I mean there were 4 folks behind us in the whole place, and remember how G-d-awful the sound was in that pit. It had all these weird angles and the sound was always just terrible in that hall.
anyway, I don't really remember anything specific about the first set - beyond my exposure to the scene and the taper's section, etc.
What I will also remember, however, and always be grateful for, was that 2nd set.... honestly, looking back on 51 shows after that fateful night in March of 1988, I don't remember hearing a set of music that soared like that set. But you know what ? There sure were many, many extraordinary sets out of those 104 that I was lucky enough to be a part of...
One visual that stands out in my mind's eye from the set - seeing as we were at the very back and top of the Omni, was the cool-as-shit lighting effects, especially during LLR when Candice (I guess) used this multitude of powerful "rays" of white light, twirling around Bobby and Jerry as Bob was wailing during the climax of the song, and I was like "uh.. are these guys messing with the elements are somehting ? Inside a building ?" I could feel the damn rain !!
Of course, changing the elements I came to learn was much easier for us at an outdoor venue, when we knocked out the power dancing in a torential rainstorm in Raleigh, or whipping up a ferocious wind storm in the hot Vegas desert...
The real knock-out punch was delivery by the train running me over on the way to Terrapin... it was at the moment that I clearly remember turning to my brother and uttering the words : "I don't know what the hell is going on here, but I want to do this as many times as possible, as soon as possible..." and another hippie was on the bus....
peace and health to you and yours in the new year ! Jeff

Subject: DSO played this show for me at the El Rey a few years back
In honor of Eddie Guerrero
1st Set: "Touch" is an appropriate opener, considering the circumstances, and managed to allow me to crack a smile. "Walkin" has several moments of dynamic interplay between the guitars. "Candyman" is effectively somber. "Queen" allows a redemptive slice admist the misery. Why can't they allow for more "Losers" in the 'Ship' slot considering the depth of feeling and sense of loss inherent in its performance. "All Over Now" is a good country-rock skiffle."Far From Me" is fine. After a three minute 'technical?' break, we continue with a hopefully (Eddie) reincarnated very fine version of "Cassidy." The set ends with a perky "Ease."
2nd Set: About 45 seconds of "Mississippi" have been exempted from this boradcast. It's a magnificent version that really shines during the soaring outro. Wow, Jerry's on fire with his instrument...it's as if he's helping carry the load of Eddie's soul up to heaven. "Terrapin" is delightful although Jerry's voice sounds thin. "Drums/Space" pass by without much noteworthy happenings. Bobby's attempt to cheese out "truckin" is not appreciated considering the vitality of Jerry's playing. 'livin on red's, red's and all kinds of shit' The outro jam segues very nicely into a "Miracle" that keeps the high energy flowing. It's not the structure or how 'August's' ("Wharf") story is told, rather it's Jerry's instrument which has been connected 'upwards' all night. Again, the segue is effortless as we're hoping all can "Turn on Your Lovelite." It's relatively short but undenibaly climactic as they headed into the final turn.
Tonight's encore selection is of the "Come with us, ladies and gentlemen down to the 'River' with the Goodness(??)" I'm already thinking about Eddie's pallbeareres, his closest friends, mourning at his funeral...

This was my first dance. A group of friends all drove up from Oxford College of Emory and the more experienced heads in the group made me swear that I would not "run away with the circus" after the show. They made me swear to meet them after the show and go back to school that night. I thought that the request was silly on their part until the end of the show when the lights came on and I decided that following this band on the road was the thing for me to do. Then I remembered the oath I had made. That promise was what tipped the scales in my head and made me decide to meet my friends for the ride back to Oxford.

I remeber this show. we arrived a day early and Bruce Springsteen played that night, but the heads had already taken over the parking lot and surrounding area. We tried to crash the bruce show, unsuccessfully. The cops were bustin hippies left and right in the parking lot because one guy had a major bad trip and freaked out. We jumped in the microbus and hid out. A few bar employees from the Omni complex invited my friend and I up to to bar after hours for a few free drinks, they were amazed with our appearance and the whole thing.

Sucks b/c this show really was smokin'. Like a previous review said, if you can get past the audio problems it is a fantastic high energy show.
I will have to disagree about the Miss 1/2 step. IMO, May 1977 was the month of the monster 1/2 steps...especially 5/7/77, 5/17/77, & 5/25/77. But this is just my opinion.
As for this show...great show...poor audio quality.

After getting shut out for tix to the legendary Hapton run of this year I was lucky enough to get some tix for this show, the first of the East Coast Tour & the first at the Omni since 1973. This show was hot indeed. I remember the 1/2 Step just blazing right through the ending Lovelight which also is on fire. God bless the now levelled Omni & the GD!!!

Fantastic show. This was the first "psychedelic" Dead show for me and my soon-to-be wife. Coming out of space and into Truckin' we both simultaneously had the sensation that we had melted together. After this show it was all aboard the Dead express for both of us. What an experience.

Looks Like Rain is one of my all time favorite dead songs. I've listened to quite a few let me tell ya, and this version is AMAZING. I've never one quite like this. The ONLY other version that comes close to beating this one, that I've heard, is from 6/21/84. I can't tell you which one I prefer because its just so close, but I was honestly floored when I heard this recording.....the drums, keys, EVERYONE was on fire. A MUST HAVE.

I too have had this tape (and poor quality at that) for some time. The second set just plain smokes. Jerry messes up the lyrics to Half Step (shocker, I know), but more than makes up for it with the finishing jam. You'd be hard pressed to find a better LLR. And the post space segment is one seemless blissful jam.
Thanks and enjoy
