whole 2nd set is just classic. They don't stop once and it's Eyes>disco Dancin'>Wharf rat>Franklins tower>Sugar mag. And the PITB>Samson>back again to close set 1 is similarly, just incredible. Look to this Dead gig for more kinetic, flowing, and viciously good live rock music.

shows. I attended all three of this run, though I made a big mistake on the 20th. I was one or two back from the stage and when I was passed a water jug, thinking it was hydration, I poured back deep: I had already dropped, and by Ramble on Rose I was seeing in sepia-cinema. Ooooooops. Oh well, this was an amazing show; inquire within to get results on the second set...

This was a great show. It did not really kick in until the ramped up Eyes that t was a special night. Franklin's Tower was amazing; they brought the lights up during Sugar Magnolia and it was delirium. They were just on this night; they were trying to calm us down during Uncle John's Band, but you can hear them just wanting to cut loose on the bridge at the end.
My children are older than I was at this show and have their own musical tastes. In many many ways the music scene now is richer than it was in '77. But this band at this time could not be touched. I had been to many Dead shows before this, and went to many after. But this was as good as it ever got; sheer joy.

I agree with JRimLik about the 2/26/77 show. I think that is still the best H>S>F of '77, which is high competition. I even prefer the 10/11/77 HSF
...
to the Buffalo HSF. It's great for sure but overrated, like the Cornell Scarlet-Fire. I also agree these 3 winterland shows are underrated. These run of shows kind of remind me of those first 3 February Winterland shows of 1974, the 22nd thru the 24th. Underrated run because May-June of 1974 overshadows everything.

This March run is underrated, and that;s saying a lot because these shows have gotten plenty of good pub over th eyears. Personally Ill take these shows

over any of the May shows that get soi much incessant hype, especially since the big guy left us, those zMay hsows have gorwn into a ridiculous legend. Yes - very good shows. Among the best they EVER played? No way, not even close. The CpornelL Dew is amazing, no doubt, but as far as the Buffalo Help>Slip or the COrnell Scarlet>Fire, I think there are any comparable if not better versions. For the former check out San Bernadinio 2.26.77, that comes to mind right away, as do some '83 versions with truly scary Slipknots. As for the former I'll stack the Normal 4.24.78, Cedar Falls 2.5.78, and Philly 4.21.84 versions against any other version. I'll take Fall '77 over the overhyped Spring any day. That is raw, powerful Grateful Dead.
As for this stellar run...all three of these March shows are extremelly well-played and have something to offer. I've always been impressed by the big jump they made from Sept. '76 to early '77. '76 really picked up steam those last few gigs - Day on the Green, Shrine, New Year's. Then they had such a more refined sound just a couple of months later. This nght gets verlooked somewhat due to the Fire debut and Alhambra the night before and the killer show the 20th, which I believe to be the best of the 3. But this show is great in it's own right. Obviously the first set Playin - althugh for first set Playins 8.6.74 is in a league of it's own. Solid second set on the 19th as well. But the 20th is the night - the best second set of the three, an amazing Row Jimmy, a sweet St. Stephen and of course the jam out of Scarlet to end the first set. Stream all three nights when you can. (FYI a buddy of mine who was at these shows tells me Garcia was using the Wolf already at these shows. I know he switched back to the Wolf for the East Coast tour that year, the Travis Bean was basically '76 only. Anyone out there who was actually there that can rememeber such detail?)

Winterland after that concert I stopped, turned around, stood at the front door and said "Well, I guess I am first in line for tomorrow!" What was truly baffling to me was the fact that at least 2000 people exited before me and none of them had the presence of mind to guarantee themselves a place in the front row the next night...and I thought I was HIGH! I WOULD GIVE IT 5 STARS BUT THERE ARE MITIGATING FACTORS LIKE 10/14-15/1976, 12/31/1976, 2/26-27/1977 and a few others. Next installment... 2/26/77 Tales From The Tour A NIGHT AT THE SWING

Out of all the amazing years in Dead history prior, who knew that the odd year of 1977 would shine so bright? I'm sure not even the Dead could predict
...
the musical genius the would flourish and climax in the Spring of 1977. This show is one of the greatest of a year that can only be described as heavenly. The Terrapin>Playin'>Samson>Playin' alone makes this a top show! Jerry is noodling way out in the atmosphere and Keith is using his Moog synthesizer to evoke pure emotion during the jam. This show is up there with the 5/7-9/77 concerts. I also can't wait to get my Winterland '77 boxed set and 5/12/77 bonus CD! Finally a '77 boxed set is released! They should have done the Cornell and Co. shows (Boston Garden and War Memorial, the nights before and after) but for some reason they are hell bent on never releasing them. Maybe because they know everyone already has sweet sounding versions of those shows! So anyway this show is for sure 5 stars for sound, recording, and performance! I'm listing to the Playin' suite on a lazy Sunday afternoon...ahhhhhhh. God bless the Grateful Dead!

A typical well played 1977 show. Very good recording quality. My favorite show of 1977 was june ninth. Comparing this I am going to give it four stars.

In the long musical history of the Grateful Dead, 1977 is clearly the most famous year.
A slew of fun first set tunes is elevated by a sensational 40 ... plus minute set closing Terrapin > Playin’ > Samson > Playin’
I really liked bertha and Big river from this one. And a great UJB to close. If we had any music this good today then I would follow the band and write reveiws on their stuff. One can only hope that someone in my generation can take some pointers. If I could find one cute girl that liked GD as much as me I would def. give her some time.

I can't NOT give this show five stars! Estimated drips with honey. The Playin'->Samson->Playin' sandwich is delectable. The entire second set,
...
especially from Eyes to Franklin's is a somewhat easy-going, sometimes trippy, ride that surely must be one of the more sublime passages in Dead history. This musical tapestry is woven in a unique fashion, employing some unexpected - but never disappointing - colors and textures. This show deserves an honored place in your collection. Two thumbs way up!

I'm listening to this with my headphones as to not wake up the misses. THis could potentially be a fantastic version but one it starts off sloppy for the first 30 seconds, and it doesn't have superior mixing. What is REALLY COOL THOUGH is Keith's playing. He's got this low synth keynotes going the whole time that I'm sure would make your brains ooze out of your nose if you were tripping. Very impressive. My favorite Estimated, for what it's worth, was the very first one on 2-26-77.

Like the 18th and 20th, this is some great Dead. However, the sound is not quite "there"-- literally. The presence is lacking; it is like listening from

just outside the hall. My guess is that there was actually some Dolby NR was applied at some point (implying an unlisted cassette gen), destroying the high frequencies. I don't mean to overstate my criticism -- this is not a bad-sounding SBD in any way, it's just not quite as great as many '77s.

Seeing references to a wild & fast "Eyes" got my interest and, Whoa, this is a great show and great download! Wharf Rat, Terrapin and even a smokin

version of Big River (sorry, I'm partial to good versions of that one)all stack up!.
Gotta' say the 11-4-77 Colgate show stacks up similarly in a LOT of respects to this show besides also opening with Bertha... "Eyes" IS EVEN FASTER! at Colgate and has the first EVER Playin>Eyes>Estimated and those transitions are awesome!
Alot transpired between February '77 and December '77 and these two shows embrace that evolution!

WOW! I have had the 18th for years and it's one of my favorites. I think this even tops it.
Fast Furious Eyes is a treat. Wharf Rat so full of feeling. ... Terrapin is killer with some great interplay between Jerry, Phil and Keith.
Also I am surprised no one has mentioned how wonderful Keith sounds in this show.
This was an absloutely stellar night for the whole band.
5 stars for Quality of show (six if I could) and 5 stars for sound quality.
This has to be a Betty Board. Thank you Dead, Betty, and Archive!!!!

tippy top tunes here........a verry jerry (and phil) show.....one of those OVER THE TOP FAST eyes.....crazy fast.....stellar jamming from playin on.....the

way jerry works himself into the samson lead is great fun, you can hear him really working it out, and how many guitar players you ever hear that just rip it "RIP" it with next to ZERO PROCESSING, no effects, just a guitar straight into the amp....and by the time he get's to solo, he just about tears your ears off........oh...man.....and then it is back to where they left off on playin/DARK STAR mode, with jerry in very exploratory voice, so strong: this playin>sam>playin clocksin at 30+minutes, and they're all good minutes......liquid any one?
no not quite, bolivian marching powder came out at this set break because our nicle little pastoral, modal jazz jam....returns as an incredibly rapid-fire coke-fuelled monster......an IT ? moment?
but, then, it's all about the wharf>frank, jerry just kind of has a firm grip of the reins and dont wanna let go.....hold on a minute bobby, daddy ain't ready for sugar yet, he's still got a good ten minutes left in 'em.....totally worth it...

I cannot say enough about these Winterland shows.

Yes, the set 1 Terrapin, Playin>Samson is extremely well played. I also like the earlier version of Estimated in the first set..........But The Eyes>Dancin'>Rat

to open Set 2 is SICK. Then a Franklin's(without any Help)into Sugar Mags is so sweet to close out a short set. Which makes the double encore including UJB frosting on the cake.

This is one of those rare shows when Set 1 tops the 2nd Set! After a thunderous Estimated (it would not be paired with Eyes until later that May) they

give you a sparkling Terrapin, then a rare Playin>Samson>Playin sandwich that grabs you by the ears and never lets go. The Samson really rocks out!
The 2nd Set is good, but sadly too short, and one suspects after such a stellar 1st Set they left themselves with nowhere to go. Still, the Eyes>Dancin>Wharf Rat grouping is unusual and very tightly executed. Of the 3 nights at Winterland in March, this remains my favorite.
