I'm currently listening to the spring 91 tour in order and these first two Nassau shows turn out to be the hidden gems of the tour. I WISH I was staying in a flea-bag Long Island motel drinking beers! Sigh. Previous night is the "bigger" show in many ways, (scarlet>fire) but, as those praising it are saying, it is a great show that's been overlooked. Terrapin encore is no throw away; it contains a Phil-driven jam that foreshadows its 1994 offspring, (and if they had transitioned, it would've been a foreshadowing of the Phil and Friends sound. Best Foolish Heart ever. Lyrical and sweet, yet featuring a fiery, exploratory jam that surprisingly returns to the verse.

a night on spring tour in 1991
A very odd, underrated, and unknown show.
Was there...by the middle of Bertha the entire back half of the floor was a GA dance floor after some folks decided to spontaneously stack most the movable chairs into a big pile. And the security allowed them to do it...bizarre.
Felt sort of west coast after that.
No the greatest show ever played , but interesting on several levels. A tight energetic Bertha, maybe the boldest and most intense Victim ever, a Foolish that starts off very quiet and then transforms in a big way during the Jerry solo.
Weather it comes across on the tape or not, superb bass mix for this show, and tour for that matter. Phil sounded like a supercell thunderstorm.
The first set setlist is about as good as it gets for 1991. Typically wild east coast hotel scene around this whole run of shows.

Just reading the reviews makes me chuckle!
My only comment: it did seem a little rushed at times this night which helped songs like Let it grow but overall made it seem like the boys had something more important going on later that evening after the show.

The Night After
The night before, March 27, 1991, they had gone past the the union's midnight curfew by only a few minutes. New York's got the ways and means to make you pay and they charged triple time to tear it down and pack it away. Probably took their sweet time doing it too. Jerry took it in typical stride but Bobby was furious. Jerry tried with opening Bertha, third song Loser, and finally Ramble on Rose, but no way was Bobby cooperating. Only six song first set i ever saw, worst second set to boot. Jerry tried to give it all back to the audience with the Terrapin encore/closer. The next night though, karma got Bob when he blew out his mic (shutting the first set down with Masterpiece) while challenging the audience (who was starved for reassurance that the night before wasn't their fault) for volume. Sixteen years later that 3-28-91 show stands alone as an example of just how bad it can be when someone gets stuck in the mud. Thanks Bob. Great soundboard and the Terrapin made it worth the trip.

First time disappointed
I have seen some great dead shows and have been fortunate to be at many shows where the boys really unleashed--but this was a complete dud. The show was short, there is not one song that really stands out, and the only redeeming quality was the first Terrapin encore in like 900 shows. I downloaded the show to see if it was as bad as my memory...I deleted the files. Can't win'em all...

fun fun
i think alot of people have a bad taste about this one because of it's length. but it's tight, the Loser-BT wind are what i thought then and now to be top notch. quality not quntity i guess.
i still remember bobby's guitar coming thru the pa to signal the terrapin encore as garcia's guitar was pretty quiet and the place snapped.
nice save boys.

blues at Nassau
Usually being a venue for great shows, I quickly mail ordered tickets for this set of shows. The first night was a classic Nassau show. This night however was not. The second set was allright. But suddenly it ended without warning. Everybody was like What the Fuck? I added a star because of the terripan encore, but believe me I was dissapointed this night. I f the guy in the parking lot didn't hand me a balloon at the end of this show, the night would have been a total disaster. I never saw a bad Grateful Dead concert, but this one was pretty dissapointing.

Terrapin Encore!
Last Terrapin Encore was 7-8-78 Red Rocks. I would imagine the previous reviewer was right about the short sets being due to someone having some intestinal dilemma's, hence the "throw 'em a bone for the short show" Terrapin encore. Very Cool!
Although this show is significantly shorter than the following night, IMHO, it is a much better show in terms of performance and energy than 3/29/91.
Double jerry gem outta space! way key. However, the beginning of China Doll is cut, ouch.

Good SBD average night, great encore
This is a pretty decent SBD of a show I attended. Not as hot as 3/27, but has it's moments. The first set is slightly above average with a pretty good let it grow and black throated in particular. Second set first two songs are kinda poorly played with many a blown change, vince seems to be dangling at times. Phil and bobby hold it down though. After a really cool drums and space (drums had a great african bell feel) the band plays a decent china doll, which Jerry sings with tons of emotion. Then the intensity level ratchets up for the last couple songs. Obviously the terrapin encore blew us away and left us floating out of the show.
There is (on my download at least) a dropout in let it grow and a splice in china doll (pretty abrubt from a no vocal part to a vocal part). Also, as is the case with alot of these 2 tracks mixed for the hall not for the tape, vince is a little loud. Overall kinda average with great highlights, if youy were there like me you will be super appreciative to hear this, but if you're just building a collection I'd grab something else.

Something weird
We drove into Nassau from Southampton Long Island and were pumped for a great show. Now, I understand that the Dead almost always gave 100%, but this night, I am almost possitive that one of the boys (probabbly Bobby) had a bad case of intestinal distress. Both sets were VERY short...you could see frustration in Jerrys eyes...I think he felt bad for the short list.
As a consulation prize, the Terrapin encore was completely unexpected, and awesome. Definetly the longest encore I have ever seen....it almost made up for the shortest show I ever saw.
