This show hold its own against any show that precedes it, and surpasses many. I bet if you asked the band, they'd agree. And Jer would too.

Pretty nice sound for a fine night..I attended both 85 Merriweather shows and they both hold weight..Yeah the 1st set is some what lack luster but played
...
well. I remember the Sun going down around Jack-o-Roe and just enjoying myself in the lawn. Then during intermission the need to get under the Pavilion for the 2nd set came into mind and off I went..so thankful! This 2nd set smoked Scarlet>Fire..Playing>Uncle Jerry's jam~~Kicked ass and is forever ingrained in my memory..over 200 shows I saw some vividly stick out in your memory and this is one of them. The Good Loving filled me up with it and the Satisfaction>Baby Blue encores were a beautiful way to cap off a wonderful night..For all the 85 bashers..you bore the daylights out of me~~~! Forever Grateful>Forever Dead!!!!~~~~~~Lifer

I'm not a jealous person, really I'm not, but if you were on summer tour in 1985, I wish I was you. Summer 85 is one of the main reasons I became a tour

head. My first show was in Worcester 87, by that summer I had about 20 tapes. Half of those were crispy boards from this tour. We were lucky they were available, Hershey, Spac, Merriweather, we all had them. I was 18 in 1987 and new to the scene, with a 73 Monte Carlo and a cranking Alpine stereo. I made friends easily at shows thanks to these boards. Merriweather shows were never average, if you made it there I'm jealous. Every time I listen to this show I feel like I'm 18 again.

Well, June 30 was one of the best! This show has too many slow spots, but Jack-a-Roe, Let it Grow, Scarlett, and Goin' Down make up for that. The Dead
...
were really at a peak this year. And, I love the mix quality - Bill and Mickey are so in synch which was a huge part of the Dead sound. Love the stereo drums!

Just vodka unfortunately, though we shared it liberally with hot and dusty Deadheads around us. Didn't have to smuggle it in or anything -- that's just
...
the way it was at Merriweather back in the day.
The Scarlet>Fire was one of those rare times -- it didn't happen very often -- when you just knew it was a keeper. The kind of moment in time you knew you'd remember for the rest of your life. I play this show whenever I want to evoke my best memories of the Dead. God I miss 'em.

Subject: Killer Second Set
Subject: Killer Second Set
This is another solid show from the summer of '85 but set 2 in particular really stands out.
The show opens with a brief, albeit fine version of Dancin'. ... Next was a Dupree's a nice rarity that is played and sung very well. One of the first highlights of the first set comes with Walkin Blues. Although it's played at an awkwardly slower pace than usual, the final jam is epic! It goes on for a while with some incredible bluesy licks and group improv. Jack-a-Roe is always a nice surprise and here it doesn't disappoint. Esau and Stagger Lee are a bit of a let down but Let It Grow makes up for that. It's a real crowd pleaser with a long extended jam that is red hot. Unfortunately it is segued into Day Job to end the set.
Set 2 is an incredible performance of which not second should be missed. Some vocal flubs don't hurt the amazing Scarlet>Fire opener. The Playin that follows is short but flows into some nice group interplay which awkwardly segues into Uncle John's. The Space is one of the more adventurous of the era with noise samples, animal sounds and bleeps. The Mr. Fantasy is alright but Goin Down the Road is soaring with lots of energetic soloing Good Lovin ends the show on a high notes and the double encore is a nice touch.

While I'm not sure that this board captures the bass frequencies as well as the better audience tapes that are out there, the Space segment of this show
...
is stand-alone fantastic. I bow down before Mr. Healy -- the seventh crucial member of the band!
The kitchen sink of samples and sound effects is utilized here but it's far from random. Rather, the band slowly works it's way through some increasingly anxious moments, through the corridor of mutant crickets and giant biting flies, to stand on top of the Temple of the Golden Keys, where only the deepest of the Beast's vibrations can be felt.

In a year when there were some great shows, this one doesn't get the credit it deserves.
I'd heard of it but the sound is stronger than I had heard so ... deep and powerful.

I am not a great fan of 1985 shows, with the exception of a few select performances. But this show is the cat's meow. The playing is methodical, smooth,
...
emotional, not too mention intense.
The sound is also excellent.
This is one you won't regret.

One of the best I ever saw. Powerful second set from start to finish on a beautiful summer Maryland night. We danced under the trees on the lawn for the

second half of the second set. The Scarlet>Fire is dangerous with Jerry solos that stretch musical boundaries. The Fire on this night was so intense, you stopped dancing and just watched and listened with your jaw dropped to your knees.

I was travelin' along with the june/july leg of the summer tour, and this is my favorite 2nd set (out of a slew of good ones, including Hershey Park, Cuyahoga
...
Falls, Saratoga and Merriweather the day before).
The band was on fire 2nd set,the day was beautiful, and the audience energy was right there with the band, in one of those great combinations that stay with you forever.
I guarantee the second set will get lots of play in your stereo. The first set has it moments too, including a nice Dancin' and a shredding Let it Grow.
The recording is ultra clean, with a short, smooth as silk aud patch at the end of Mr. Fantasy- where the sbd cassete tape cut and drove me crazy for years.
Thanks to Piano Man for getting this one up!
