Penultimate Lazy Lightning->Supplication Jam. Final version 10/31/84. Too bad, love this song and jam! Second set opening Terrapin stretches to 15-minutes, but the show surprise is the rousing, 9-minute Brent-led I Just Want to Make Love to You->I Need a Miracle, which also stretches, clocking in at 13-minutes. Longest ever? Truckin'->Wharf Rat is good with a sweet Garcia solo at end. 

The boys could have dropped the ball on this one but they didn't. Certainly they weren't pumped for this show for the most part. But they all played very well and there is a unique relaxed quality that comes through the band's performance. Bob's rhythm playing is very nice in this mix. The highlight is definitively the "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and the jam that follows. Very nice Birdsong in the first set. The NFA and US Blues feel perfunctory, but other than that the show is an engaging listen, with the Love to You jam NOT TO BE MISSED!

I really like the "Bird Song" in this set...
It had me dancing, while no one was watching!

Highlights: I Need A Miracle

They stopped playing this because it was too hard for Bobby to sing (the Supplication part). It is obvious they liked the jam between the two, but having seen many Lazy-->Supps in the 70's and early 80's it was sad that they just stopped. Lazy Lightnin' certainly isn't hard to sing, but they went together.

Perhaps if they practiced a little more it would not have been hard. Supllication (the singing part) is just two shords (D-->Fmaj7/9)...lame Weir. He was the reason shows were good or sucked. If he was held in check, or selected good tunes, the night was usually good. If he played Mexicali or Looks Like Rain and Throwing Stones the night usually was good at best!

This is a lame performance and not a very good recording. The energy starts out OK, but fades rapidly and all that's left are A LOT of mistakes. I'm wincing about every 20 seconds. I guess a quarter hit of windowpane would help, but that's no excuse to give it anything more than two stars.

they might have retired lazy->lightning not in spite for the bct version down the pike, but because this one was so damn good that it just couldn't be out done in that inimitable mid-80s gd way.

the second set is as seamless as the setlist suggests. something got into the water-cooler this night. the transitions are refreshingly unique and warble with healy's disequilibrium. ah, the power.

This is a very spacy show that I appreciate more on disc than when I was there. At the time I thought of it as a sloppy show with a smoky, blue collar, central mass. grit to it. I thought they were much more on top of it the next night but then again the second night was my first trip so it had a slight advantage. (I chose to wait based on my largely untested theory at the time, (this was my eighth show), that the second night was always better.

This show is like primal 60'w dead playing with Brent on their 80's instruments. This is a partial soundboard that kicks in during "Lazy Lightning"; it's a nice warm board and the aud part is excellent too.

The jam before Miracle should really be labeled as "Caution". Phil plays his riff clearly for a number of measures and the others play their 1968 roles as well, though Bob is a little more radical than his youth, adding modern complications to the old composition.

Each song in the pre-drums is separated by a unique transitory jam, a unique event in itself to some extent. It's a show where a tough song to disintigrate, Miracle, is given the challenging position of the song into drums and the Grateful Dead accomplish it by slipping themselves into the business end of a 1969 Dark Star. Stark, agressive, primitive, this jam goes on for ten minutes of Carousel Ballroom revisited before giving way to a minimilistic Drums.

This is surely one of the Grateful Dead's most psychadelic shows of all time!

The first set just crushed it, Mass shows are typically a hair away from a barroom brawl in rowdiness and this was no exception on hearing this again it brings back alot of memories about how wild the atmosphere was on the floor and the Centrum was only a year old and Worcester cops were just not equipped to deal with the onslaught of 12,000 heads fueled by 300 mikes each (I know I was).

Opening with Aiko got the place rockin, Candyman is unbelievable andI agree there was still a family atmosphere then and Jer Bob and Phil would acknowledge you ever so slightly when they saw you AT EVERY SHOW it was great and this was lost later, this Bird Song at 17:20 is one of the longest they ever played and is really sweet - I have 3 stars next to this on the tickets stub while I could still write but the LAZY LIGHTNING>SUPPLICATION>DEAL IS UNEQUIVICALLY THE BEST ON THIS WHOLE SITE... You cannot imagine how sweaty and how much we were high fiving at Jerry ripping it in the jam in between the lights dropped low to a blue/yellow and Jerry turned on that set of tweeters that goes in circles fast and slow depending on how he stepped on the peddle which gives it that airy sound and Bob kept whacking the wawa, Phil was thumping in perfect harmony. I can remember looking over at my buddy with huge pupils and saying you will never hear another hotter version of this song even at that time it dwarfed any tape I had ever heard. All the lights blasted into the crowd with the "Dizzy aint the the word for the way youre makin me feel now".... It was so f*cking great. The 2bd set pales by comparison but the Terrapin opener was cool and it's 21 mins with a nice jam at the end like alot of shows from this time it's either slow to get going or loses steam rare to power all the way through the way some of the Bay Area '84 shows do.

BTW there is no chance this is a board this is from one of the 50 or so mikes from the tapers section. A board would not do this justice, Phil would drop these bombs that would just ricochet all around the inside of this crummy little arena. Man did they rock this place and I think me and my boys had something to do with it....

There is way too much audience noise in this copy to be a SBD.

I've loved this show for many years. The first half of the second set may be as far "out there" as they got after 1974. I mean, it takes them 47 minutes to cover Terrapin (the first time they opened a 2nd set with it in eons) and 3 short songs: out-right jamming takes up half of that time. Esssential show.

This was my first show but I'm hearing it for the first time twenty years later. I remember putting two tiny paper squares on my tongue with about eight other friends of mine. The Centrum looked packed. Once we found our seats and began "settling in" I recall the splash of tiny people across the stadium seemed to be inches from my face. The buzz in that place moments before the show was "wicked" as they say in MA. Then came Iko. The drums startled me and I got confused and listened the music play. I left the building for a while and came back during Truckin'. That was a great wrinkle in time. Nice to hear the show now...

I agree with the Lazy Lightnin comments. However, get this show for the outstanding pre drums segment. Jerry is on fire for "just want to make love to you". They should have played that song more often.

They played played this again on 10/31 in berkeley and then just stopped.... first set opened with aiko which is always good but the lazy lightning supplication deal is off the charts...

There was a pack of about 10 of us that drove down from boston with a ball of opium and parked ourselves in the 2nd row right in front of jerry and kept hitting this and blowing it in his face I can still remember him looking me right in the eyes during candyman and he just started ripping after that we all just looked at each other all tripped out howling.... I later found out that was his drug of choice from Rock Scullys 'book of the dead'.

I dont remember much from the second set but will always remember the first....

this tour was spotty and some shows were just ok but there were some pearls like the above and shakedown at carrier dome a few nights later- overall augusta were better shows but this first set stands alone...
