around a car filled with slightly older deadheads/hippies in the parking lot during lunch at New Cannan High School, cuz i knew what they were doing and wanted to,too,they spun around drove up to me and said "why ya'followin'us kid?" i mutter that i wanted to cop a lil'herb and they just about dragged me through the window and said "we'll get ya'high!" They did (including a drive down town to the Mobile station);got back to school where they led me into the smoking lounge and a few boys and girls were noodling around a small boombox in the corner. I joined the noodle and felt really really good...the answer to who was playing on the box Was The Grateful Dead. Soon after, my collection of bootlegs had a few sets from this New Years Run. They were my first prized SBDs. These ,a dozen others, and the 2nd set of greek 7.13.84 <--it was THAT Stella and ones like the one here that just ALWAYS grab my heart and soul. Garcia's full emotional touch and feel - it's like Jodie Foster's character trying to explain what was up when she got back from the flip side (outer space) in the movie "Contact". I am just plain grateful to be a deadhead. And trying to stream this board and record it onto my mother's stand alone CD burner, (fuck off weir) (LOL),has brought back a few old memories of my first recordings. This would NOT be a prized SBD for me today-though good-it 's mix is a lil'uneasy and a bit over saturated to play extremely loud . If you are a Brent Mydland freak (as I tend to be) you will love this recording because Brent's audio is way WAY in front of the mix.

for a little magic. We got it when they opened the second set with China Cat Sunflower. The guitar solo it is incredible and different from any I China Cats I have ever heard (I have heard many but not all of course.) In the middle of it there is an undeniable banjo twang that makes this a must have. At the time, we were so floored that we didn't notice how short the set really was. After the Baby Blue, we walked out completely satisfied with a splendid show. An extra song would make this a 5 star for me!

as is most everything else. This is definitely one of the best of '83. I wasn't able go to sleep after listening to this. The Minglewood rips it up, as does the Loser. Everything is just played very well. Good stuff. {For the best listen of this show, get the audience copy, this SBD, while clean, isn't the best mix in the world. Judge this show by the FOB version.}

My First Show!
Unfortunately, I cannot boast of seeing the classic shows of the late '60s and early '70s. No, my Greatful Dead experience began on December 28, 1983.

While certainly not a classic, this show does have a fantastic "Loser". And I would have to say that any show with a "Dire Wolf", "Bird Song", "China Cat > Rider" and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" would serve as a pretty auspicious indoctrination into the mystery of Dead shows. I saw some pretty great shows at the Greek Theater, Frost Ampitheater, Henry J. Kaiser and the Berkeley Community Theater after this show, but this will always be special to me. We sat in the first row of the balcony (dead center) for the 2nd set. I still recall the encore vividly. We were already winding down, but when the band started into "Baby Blue", we packed another bowl and got swept away. Probably just a 3 star show, but I've added a star for sentimentality.
