Subject: Stronger vocals, little bass.
Subject: Stronger vocals, little bass.
This one has better vocals and highs, but very little bass. The NAK 700 copy below this one is a WAY different recording with LOTS of lows and bass, so
...
I'm going with that one.
By the way, the bass and lows on the NAK 700 tape are actually pretty rare for '81 audience tapes, so it is special, maybe even rare.
I've been listening to 81 audience tapes for years and have gotten used to the high treble and low bass, so it's nice on the ears.
Great show, strong Jerry.
THANKS tapers!!!!!!

This was quite a memorable one for me. First time away from home at a college on Lake Superior. We road a chartered bus down to Madtown. I used the money
...
my folks sent me to pay a fine for snagging salmon. I was packed into the stage three layers out for the first set and up in the seats for the second. I was completely electrified and so was this show. As faced as I was I remeber it like it was yesterday. The boys were rockin'! I remember when we got out it was snowing and as the light caught the flakes they were like little bits of mother-of-pearl. There was a big globe outside with snow at the north pole and we made an ice age happen by throwing snow balls up at it. AAAhh they're wrecking the world the more gone folks hollered. It's hard to decide if the music or the whole experience was better so I don't.

Take my word for it...
"Hear me now, believe me later!"
"Stay thirsty my friends!"
I seldom *rate* the shows for a number of reasons but this one is ... a keeper.
Great versions of every song. Seriously.

Please go out and buy Postcards of the Hanging if you don't already own it. Only then, by listening to that and then to this source, can you fully appreciate
...
the raw, emotional power of this performance. This is one of those cases where you simply must have the AUD. This source, BTW, is superior to the later source, shnid 28901. Absolutely essential!

Was at the show and remember the snowstorm. Place was only about half full. Was my fifth and last show in Madison dating back to 2/73 and is my second
...
fav next to that 1st 73 show. Much more fun than the 2/78 show on Dicks Picks. This show is one of the many that just had that rollicking good time feel in the hall from start to finish.

I like the sound of this recording better than the other.
Very good Althea, Cassidy, Bertha. Deep Elem is a gem. Jerry really has fun. The band has ... a good sound this night and a lot of energy. Best 81 i've heard but i've only listened to a few 81's so far.

this show is memorable to me for 2 reasons:
1) i drove from minneapolis to madison in a nasty blizzard to get there
2) the noodling transition from drums ... to truckin sounds like spanish bullfight music from a matador movie. ok maybe i was "impressionable" but i still hear it now :-)

Subject: A Clear '81 Show???
Subject: A Clear '81 Show???
I can't believe this show is from '81. One of the better AUD's from '81 I've heard and much clearer than the SBD's from that year. Bass is weak, though...you
...
have to crank your bass knob.
Band starts out slow (Jack Straw gets flubbed), and if it weren't for Brent ripping it open during CC Rider, I'm not sure if they would have ever turned it 'on.' Nevertheless, the rest of the show rips up until Around (when the wheels run off). A nice Deep Elem rare electric. Top 5 Truckin'. Killer jam after Black Peter...too bad Weir stops it short > Around. Good show overall.
Recording 3.5 stars (just for lack of bass & some hiss), performance 3.25 stars (for slow start and weak finish). Average rating = 3.375. Overall a must-have show for your '81 collection.
